Except what they are doing with data mining are good things. No more shitty ads for tampons, instead I get ads for guys - ads for something I might actually use. Also data mining for something trivial like entertainment allows them to fund the programs you like, if you hide your information and don't let them know what you are watching then we'll get more dangerous housewives and less firefly. We're really shooting ourselves in the foot here. Really the only group I don't want having my information is the government because they use it to tax me and jail me, both of which they do by the point of a gun. Corporations using data to provide better services so that I'll spend my money on them is a good thing. The government tracking my information so they can find better ways to forcibly tax me, not so much.
Thats what I was thinking when looking at the data. I would like to see that chart again in 200 years, to bad myself and my children will be dead by then, possibly even my grandchildren.
You can't just publish your findings in any journal. There are editors and they do keep scientific papers out, especially ones that would hurt the larger community - or their funding sources.
The hard part is getting "right of way" to lay the fiber. Fiber isn't that expensive and compared to ISP prices it is almost cheaper to lay the fiber to your home yourself.
I'm really getting sick of all this selfish industry news. Look, it is simple. We have the greatest tool the world has ever known to give our creations to the world and have it archived there for as long as humanity exists. If a business can turn any profit and keep people employed while at the same time sharing it with everyone then that is even better. They don't need record profits, they just need to cover their production costs and the salaries of their employees. As long as they are making enough to do that they should be happy.
Every time they mention 3D TV I think to myself: "DO NOT WANT!!!"
Then I think to myself, gee am I some old curmudgeon that would have been against talkies one the big screen clinging to my black and white TV when color TV's came out?
I hate the idea of having to wear special glasses to watch my TV. I think this new move to 3D TV is a novelty that will wear off, but it won't because it is easier for companies to lock down 3D because of the larger size and proprietary equipment.
Am I just not keeping up with the times? Have I finally gotten to the point where I'm to old for technology? Geez, I'm only 30!
Don't they already do something similar to catch people with warrants? I've heard about them offering free TV's and stuff and when they show up they get arrested.
Is Cannibalism illegal? I know you can have your placenta made into pills and it is supposed to be good for you. It is not illegal and is technically cannibalism.
Many non-art followers mix up "contemporary" with "modern"; even many people who claim to know art sometimes mix the two terms. Maybe he meant "contemporary"?
1 of 2 things will happen. Either people with the disease that needs a cure will donate or the disease affects so few people that the cost to find a cure isn't worth it to society to find it.
The new world is funded by micro donations and consumption taxes. We aren't there yet, but when we do get there people will look back at this generation as if we were uncivilized.
Sure they would. Governments fund cancer research to the tune of Billions of dollars a year. Aids research is funded through charities and through donations.
You will still have patients causing a demand for drugs. Universities and teaching hospitals will pick up the slack where the drug companies fail. Charities and donations will cover the research costs. Manufacturing costs will go down and drugs will be cheaper for everyone.
I mentioned reform. Trademarks do have a purpose. They identify you with your product. That doesn't stop someone from copying your product, but they shouldn't be able to tarnish your name. I also say you should give credit to the inventors. Citations are very important. Fame has value and it lasts a lot longer than monetary gains. You can turn Fame into money, through speaking, teaching, lectures, and endorsements. You can make money on IP without hording it as long as it is required that you cite the author. Claiming someone else's idea as your own is still wrong.
We only need GPL to protect the open community from Copyright and Patent lawyers. If there was no longer Copyrights or Patents there would be no reason for the GPL. The GPL is a stopgap until intellectual property laws are reformed.
The entire 8 bit Nintendo catalog, now 30 years old.
Prescription drugs.
Forceps, which a private family kept secret for nearly a century when it could have been used to save 1000's of lives.
Information is meant to be free. We use information gotten from others everyday. We are all standing on the shoulders of giants and without them we wouldn't be here today.
I buy hard cover books. However they are like a decoration. Something to put on a bookshelf. They are aesthetic, they smell good, and feel good to hold. The hard cover book as a collectors item or a decorative piece is never going to go away. The price of a hardcover book should be going up, but the quality and rarity should be going up as well. It has become a niche market and not a mainstream market. Just like there is still a place for vinyl records.
The books I have in hardback are:
The entire Ann Rice vampire series.
Dune
Knuth - The art of computer programming.
The complete works of Shakespeare.
All 7 Harry Potter Books
All Shel Silverstein's books.
Lots of text books, didn't sell any back at the end of semesters.
Shelves of children's books (I doubt they will ever be replaced by e-books).
Other iconic works, anything else is fine in paperback or as an e-book.
You're right about Capitalism being an industrial philosophy, however people are attempting to use the model on intellectual property which isn't a limited resource.
You're wrong about the software on the computer. The physical good is still the most expensive part. In a corporate environment service contracts are the most expensive part. The software licenses are a minor cost comparatively. So the service or the good is where the value is. There is little to no value in intellectual property.
On a personal computer the hardware is the only cost. The OS is ubuntu. Open Office for my office suite. G-mail for my mail client. Gimp for image editing.

All 383 pages of it? Could you summarize it in a post? How about an info-graphic?
Let me Google that for you.

Which is why instead of upgrading my trail version of Windows 7 I'm switching to Ubuntu 9.10.
Crap... now how am I supposed to play Star Craft 2...
Happy Valentines Day Google. Thank you for the gift. I <3 U TOO!
The Tellus Science Museum in Northwest Georgia has a nice planetarium.
I wasn't to impressed with the kids program since you can basically get the same show on PBS, however the "Live Tour of Tonights Sky" is impressive.
Georgia Tech does a lot of stuff with them and there are some nice exhibits. If you haven't been I'd recommend it.
In some locals it is legal to watch child porn in your own home or even in public, also the definition of child porn varies from local to local.
At least this was an appeals court and not the Supreme Court. I imagine this one will be going to the Supreme Court.
Or a filter, kinda like a dialysis machine, but for viruses.
except another piece of the internet to censorship, the question becomes what will they censor next?

I was going to mod you up, but the mod system only goes to 5. This post deserves an 11.

How do youtube videos become so popular? Is there some advertising company that you submit your videos to? Please do tell.
