"I love Ubuntu, but the only thing I haven't done yet is set up DVD ripping to XviD type stuff on it, like GordianKnot on Windows."
Well you should install the mplayer essential codec pack, ffmpeg, lame, dvdrip (which is a DVD/VOB ripper as the name implies) and avidemux (more like virtualdub than autogk but much nicer to use and outputs to AVI, OGM, MPG, DVD, VCD, SVCD formats). There are others that don't spring to mind right now (it's late), but that's all I ever need to use.
Although Kilobyte's post may have been a bit exaggerated, I agree that compared to Fedora, Debian and even Suse, Ubuntu can end up shockingly unstable after a while. I stuck it out with Dapper for a few months despite many minor annoyances like having to install many basic packages which in my opinion should have just been there already, like portmap, nfs-kernel-server, samba(maybe?), many fonts, the list went on... not to forget the slow pace of Ubuntu package releases, even in the multiverse repositories
After an apt-get dist upgrade finally hosed the lot I threw in the towel and slapped FC5 back on there and my system's been up to date & stable ever since.
Anyway, my point was that Ubuntu may install nicely and look kinda slick but it may just drive you nuts after a while.
Virtualization is finally catching on but please don't make out that this is a 'new' idead.
Virtualization has been built into commercial unices such as AIX, HP-UX etc. for over a decade.
A handset embedded apache server could potentailly be used to host a range of applets accessible by any web enabled device. Surely it can't be that long until phone's have built in Wi-Fi... It could make free audio & video streaming over the internet (ala Skype) mainstream.
As we're already seeing city-wide Wi-Fi rollouts and rapid take-up of home wireless broadband this could be the next killer app.
I work in a team responsible for systems, platforms, feeds & databases involved with investment management, performance measurement, securities trading etc. etc.. for an investment bank. If anyone was trying to handle a 65000 row spreadsheet in MS Excel, they'd deserve a kick up the arse.
Beleive it or not financial companies have dedicated systems for reporting, analysis and all that mathematical hocus-pocus.....
Dia doesn't support the Visio file format though so if Ajehals doesn't mind dumping all of his existing charts and giving up the ability to share his charts with Visio users, Dia would be fine.
Totally agree with you there, I (as many of us Slashdotters) refuse to put up with Windows on any of my PC's, but to think of spending a sizeable wad of cash on slick & stylish new Mac and then purposely loading a Windows OS in favor of Mac OS, that's just sounds really dum to me.
Just shove in users, umask=0000, in the appropriate line for your FAT [artition in/etc/fstab.
The 'users' allows you to mount & unmount it as yourself without having to su to root.
The umask is like a 'chmod 777' for the whole of the mounted FAT partition.
It seems many are misunderstanding the concept here.
This wouldn't be a tool that checks your spelling like Google search. It sounds as if this is simply a tool to block sites that have been blacklisted by MS that take advantage of & make revenue from people's URL typos, I would imagine the definitions would be automatically updated.
Anyway... why would this tool need to query MS with a URL when IE already does that by default (see the 'Just go to the most likely site' option in IE's advanced settings).
Windows bashing aside a sec (not that use it myself or anything, god forbid!) there is a bunch of freeware/OSS links over at nethomehelp.co.uk for Windows n00bs.

Well they have the domain allevil.org as an alternative to their native URL.

Precisely.
One of the many, many reasons why Windows isn't for me or the millions of others who prefer Linux, MacOS and other *nix style OSs
I have to laugh at this WGA "controversy" though.
I'm all for Microsoft on this one, they're just reacting to the widespread theft their product.
If that bothers you, use a different OS.
"upgrade to Linux"
;D
Well said
You'd be surprised, I spoke to one guy who bought a new PC because he was having problems with malware!.... Really!
I think you mean 'shutdown -a'

...and may do again if "MS Singularity" really takes shape.
Did you really think that the "Linux Labs" at Microsoft was just for 'interoperability' studies?
really?

No they don't, all iPods use HFS & FAT32.
Why would Apple pay Microsoft a licence fee to use NTFS?
Why would Apple use an FS on their iPods that their own Mac OSX can't natively write to?
It seems many are misunderstanding the concept here.

50000000000000 mHz = 50 MHz. Where did you get GHz from?
