But OK that's the default install option of Windows but what the hell are companies like Dell, Compaq,... doing ? That's ok to blame Microsoft to make an OS that out-of-box is a security nightmare, but why nobody ever blame Dell and the like to spend their time packaging custom icon and wallpaper instead of a secure default config ?
Wood is inherently more inflammable than concrete and yet wooden houses don't burn 2 days after they are built and you would sue the building company if they also built your fireplace 100% in wood.
For most users out there, that the OS still function nicely is the least of their concern. They can always load any 'repair' CD and get a more or less fresh OS again.
However, there is no repair CD to retrieve 5 year of vacation pictures.
The problem with security is that the social engineering is by far the most effective threat and basically that means that whatever the system, hackers will always be able to do what the user can do with his computer.
The only system that is ultimatly safe for a non "computer expert" user is an console type computer. You can only run the application that -whatever vendor- has installed for you, go on internet only via a -vendor controled- network, and save only 'passive' files on the disk ( like plain image, text,... no macro, nothing ). And even then, I -unfortunatly- know people gullible enough to fall for a message like "Unlock the Nude Britney Spear pictures that are hidden on your disk : delete all your mails while pressing the F1 key. If you maintain the F1 key pressed all the time, your mail will not be deleted but you will see a new folder on your disk with the pictures"
We are in a world where after millenium of mugging and scam, people still need to be reminded not to show their wallet full of cash on holliday or not to fall for the classic card/dice scam on the street ! I still see people leaving their car open with engine running while buying some crap...
Not necessarily ! The customer can win by avoiding deception after buying a new 'Vista ready' computer that is just a rebranded WinXP ready machine and need to be upgraded 6 months later.
'Vista Ready' stickers will be used by a lot of small companies as a selling point. Those companies do whatever it takes to have the prices low, including minimising the spec. If they can get the stickers with 128 Meg RAM shared with the integrated Video chipset, they won't hesitate !
At least with those kind of spec, you have more guarantee to have a 'decent' machine, not only for Vista but for whatever operation user expect to do nowadays like music, hires video, storing 10 years of photo, editing video/photo,...
We know that Spammer uses huge botnets of sometimes 100K machines in it. Also you can "rent" some botnet for illegal activity.
So it would be theorically possible that one of your concurrent launches a big "google suggest defacement attack" by doing tons of searches in google that leads google to suggest, for example, "sucks" or "morons" when your company names is entered ?
Well I suppose any 'feedback' technology can be abused those days and it is only a question of who is willing to pay more than what is possible.
Yep that's true there are still quality radio out there !
I was indeed actually talking about the biggest station that play mostly mainstream music.
I guess that's all the paradox of RIAA and other big "artist" association.
IP laws and DRM only creates a "bigger" market for well established artists. People rush to buy Madonna albums whatever if it contains music or not, but if you are a small artist and nobody has ever heard (even "illegaly") your music, who will buy it ? Off course those small artists are I suppose not too happy if they lyrics are replaced by "Radio Contact-tact-tact" while Madonna only have to give a 5 sec crappy sample of a song.
Strange like IP Laws and Patent Laws seems only to raise the entry level on the market instead of lowering it as they were ( and still are ) supposed to do.
They already took action against that. I don't know how it is with XM, but here in Belgium, radio station are not playing the original song.
Every popular radio station has a version of the song "customised" for the Radio. The customisation is for example play the station name in rythm with the song,... Or you have a small interruption after 1 min where a digitalised voice remind you how your radio station is "super". And I'm not counting the fact that generally the beginning and the end of the song are cut... or that sometimes they play a special "radio version" more speed or simply shorter.
and I also have to train my parents to use whois ???
And don't forget that I had first to explain what is a 'OS', 'program' and finally what a 'browser' is.
To result of all the lessons is that my father turned into an Internet paranoid. He is convinced his machine crawled under spywares and that every single website is a phishing attempt. And now, when he needs to access his bank account, I need to connect myself from my machine and tell him the result over the phone. The same when he need to buy something. He never uses his machine for anything remotly personal.

You cannot reward everybody in the company otherwise reward loose its meaning. So you must choose. They don't like being compatible with Linux/Unix when we are talking about Windows to Unix. However they are not stupid, they must make sure people can migrate to windows nicely with the less trouble as possible and AFTER lock them in proprietary technologies.
They want to kill Open source ? Sure but I don't think this release in their new killing machine, just a part of their global strategy. In fact, the posix subsystem has been around for a while and is beter know as Interix or Windows Service for Unix. This is already quite powerful, but having it more tighly integrated is really a big plus. There are still lots of border problems occuring. Running 100% unix app. is easy, but when starting to have windows starting to call/pipe themself between subsystems you start to get into troubles. This new release will polish windows/unix cohabitation for example using Visual Studio for debugging or calling Windows API from the unix subsystem.
Now, is that evil Microsoft trying to lock the world ? I think that when a company goes the way of using the Unix Subsystem, they already made the choice of migrating to Windows with everything implied. The new release ease a little bit the pain of the developer and give more flexibility to project manager ( like more option to stage the work ), so for me it is a good thing: those 2 are the workers in the migration, not the decision maker or the one getting the free 1st class trip at Redmond, so a little help is always welcome.
BTW, in our case, thanks to Interix/Cygwin we can sell our Unix application to Windows only customer. That sometimes works the other way around.
I don't think we could realisticaly think that all online retailer including iTunes would shut down their activities in France.
France is a powerfull market. People already buys a lot of stuff online. Shutting everything down risks to be counter productive for shops. Yes they can win (yet, it seems that French Goverment is not easily pressured, see the recent events in France), but they could in the end loose a significant part of their market to filesharing especially after an "insult" to their french customers: French is a top nation and people already needs very little morale justification to start filesharing, I think the message from online stores will be interpreted by Frenchs as "Frenchs are not worth it" before "French governement has made a cruel rule against the poor music label and music store", exacly the kind of message that could stick a 'Hero'-label to every cracker in the world.
Open the window. I already had that kind of problem when playing in an overheated room with not enough fresh air. And try to play for session no longer than when you feel you could start getting sick. It seemed that positive playing experience (i.e. not being sick ) was more encouraging for my body and after a while my bearable session time could increase. ( I had that problem with HL2 and I could barely survive 5-10 min in the beginning. At the end I could bear 1 hour session without problem. )
It seems for that also help to try different setting. I can't give you precise advise but check the refresh rate and your screen resolution. For LCD try to adjust the resolution, I have more problem with mine LCD than with some friend's ( mine is older and has a sligthly worse response time ) and generally much more trouble with LCD than with CRT ( but I never tried the brand new LCD with 8ms response time )
I'm more quickly sick in more agressive light conditions, and using a lower brithness/contrast for games ( to avoid the eye burning white an LCD can produce ) helped a lot.
It seems the product do not even aim at being a photoshop-like application. Maybe this has changed since the beta, but the main purpose was vectorial graphism.
Microsoft is not even talking on its website about anything that could position it against Photoshop. Just see by yourself
Yep, that's so hard... People should be happy that Windows Install can read from the CD it is installed from and stop complaining.
Seriously, I never understood what could be so hard for an install CD to let you briefly put another CD in the drive to read some files.
Even in the old times of Win95 the basic DOS recovery floppy could access all optical drives and you could use this floppy image to build bootable install CD...
"Who is going to defend those plants when the military has become disorganized, undisciplined, and possibly split into competing sides?"
Current reactor design make it hard to explode, and the reactor will stop working well before there is some real risk. Off course some government could tinker the reactor of those plants... sure, but I think if that day ever happen in the US, that will be the least of your concern compared to the threat of actual nuclear weapons like the massive arsenal the US already has. www.ebay.com is not the same company as www.ebay.com.checkyouraccount.ru because they have to read the address backward and seriously
www.ebay.com.checkyouraccount.ru/~level1/level2/c

The problem is that after you ( painfully ) trained them, you notice that a lot of websites use insane url like that and yet perfectly valid one !

Just see by yourself

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/overview.
When you tried to 'kill' another product, you generally start to match its features, in this case, both feature list have almost nothing in common.
For me that doesn't make more sense that saying Adobe Illustrator is a Photoshop killer.
BTW, this has already been discussed:

"support for optical drives?"
... People should be happy that Windows Install can read from the CD it is installed from and stop complaining.
...
Yep, that's so hard
Seriously, I never understood what could be so hard for an install CD to let you briefly put another CD in the drive to read some files.
Even in the old times of Win95 the basic DOS recovery floppy could access all optical drives and you could use this floppy image to build bootable install CD
Maybe they just lost the autoexec.bat
"Who is going to defend those plants when the military has become disorganized, undisciplined, and possibly split into competing sides?"
... sure, but I think if that day ever happen in the US, that will be the least of your concern compared to the threat of actual nuclear weapons like the massive arsenal the US already has. ( and the one of Russia, Pakistan, India, China, Israel, ... and probably at the time Iran, North Korea, ... )
Current reactor design make it hard to explode, and the reactor will stop working well before there is some real risk.
Off course some government could tinker the reactor of those plants
