  1. So how does this IOTA tackle the double-spending problem? You know, the thing to which Bitcoin was advertised as a solution?

  2. Right, they don't "change their search algorithm", they can just hard-code re-rankings of individual websites.

  3. Remember that the ESRB is owned and operated by the game publishers themselves. They are obviously not going to kill one of their own biggest cash cows.

  4. A/323 on FCC Approves Next-Gen ATSC 3.0 TV Standard (reuters.com) · · Score: 1

Part of ATSC 3.0, the standard A/323 defines a wireless uplink transmitter, supporting the Internet Protocol, built into your TV set, operating on a different frequency band than the downlink broadcast signal which contains the video stream.

By implementing this standard, a TV becomes a two-way communication device even if you don't plug it into Ethernet or WiFi.

  6. Good thing the article is served via HTTPS, eh? Oh wait, zdnet, supposedly a techology news site, DOES NOT SUPPORT HTTPS!

  7. Speech is free if the authorities will not censure the speaker.

False advertising is sometimes censured, so it is either not free (conservative) or partially free (risky).

A better question is, should false advertising be free?

  8. They must really enjoy tracking their users. I can't even access the article. Instead I get a page that says "Access Denied - Sucuri Website Firewall" with "Block reason: Bad bot access attempt." Running Adblock, NoScript and UAControl with default:block (send no User-Agent at all) probably doesn't endear my browser to them.

Servers are available. Popular forks include MaNGOS and TrinityCore.

The regular graphical client is still closed, but somewhat moddable, and works well with the above servers. There's also a command-line player-assisted vanilla bot.

  10. It's called "Manna", short for "Manager".

  11. 74% is better than random guessing (50%), but not by that much. This tells us that it might be possible to diagnose schizophrenia by MRI analysis, but it is far from a useful product.

  12. If an unfriendly superintelligent AI takes over Earth, it will then soon take over Mars as well. In fact, there is nowhere in our reachable universe that is safe from such an entity.

  13. What about the patients that DIDN'T get a vaccine? Did they do better or worse than the treated ones?

  25. Re:Does the User Control the Keys? on WhatsApp Enables End-To-End Encryption For All Forms of Communications By Default · · Score: 4, Informative

The user's device generates the private key, but only under the control of WhatsApp's closed-source app.

The key exchange is done through WhatsApp's server, much like message exchange. There is no revokation, though I imagine a user who loses his private key could generate and register a new one. There are no certificates except for the connection to the server.

An attacker would have to take control of WhatsApp's server, but once that is done, they could run classic MiTM attacks on all WhatsApp users.
