Ultimately, Google are for making money. As are Microsoft. As are Apple, Novell, Red Hat, basically any for-profit organisation. Sometimes, they will do something that one perceives as noble, if only to increase turnover.

Corporations have a legal mandate to make money. It doesn't mean they can do no good, just that they are opposed to good deeds if they result in the haemorraging of cash.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the work Google do (at the moment at least). Just don't expect them to honestly set out inspirational visions for their future.

The thing is that, if everyone said "GNU/Linux", the "GNU" part doesn't remind them of the FSF, it reminds them of RMS.

Furthermore, if RMS wants people to be remembered, he should fight for everyone to be remembered, whether he agrees with their development model or not. Otherwise, he's just being hypocritical.

FOSS ideology was never about names. If Linus didn't protect his intellectual property, Microsoft and SCO could make a company called "Linux Baby Killing, Inc."

Also, trademark protection isn't new. Why don't you phone Red Hat and ask to make a RHEL based distro, still keeping all Red Hat's insignia? Or maybe try Debian, or Firefox, or anyone else. I don't understand why people have a problem with this.

I've always wondered, if you've got Acrobat on your system, would Stallman want you to call it Adobe/GNU/Linux? 'Cos I've got ATI/Adobe/Real/Lexmark/GNU/Linux in that case.

"GNU/Linux" was never about giving people credit. It was about ensuring that Stallman's work in establishing a free software community is never forgotten.

Microsoft created the term 'TCO' in the first place, IIRC. To me, its all BS. Sure, 7-11 may have found it moderately preferable to stay with Windows than to retrain staff, but that doesn't give any indication to the qualitive improvements in the standard of work, nor does it factor in long-term benefits that open source development models tend to provide. The parent also raised a fantastic point about vendor lock-in; if you use windows, Microsoft effectively owns your software.

Its interesting that you cite the GUI as a form of innovation. My first reaction was "yeah, but, like, look under the cover. Linux is way more innovative."

However, the customers that the article is talking about doesn't care about how effective pipes and sockets are in a CLI. They want their OS to look good and guide them by the hand when they try to do a task (think Clippy). I think the FOSS community could learn a lot from this approach. So long as they don't sacrifice performance where it really is important.

CSI also makes it harder to convict murderers. Firstly, forensics teams are under a lot of pressure to piece together events from not much (ever notice how on CSI they see a drop of the victim's blood and say "so John Doe did it with the axe in the dining room!"?), but juries are now harder to convince unless a strand of hair was found at the scene.

Are you suggesting that someone without a job is more worthy of death than someone with a job?

The jobless aren't often in that position out of choice. Here in the UK, unemployment benefits are only payed to those who can prove that they are looking for a job. And plenty of people are on "Workseeker's Allowance". Now, some of these people may not be able to feed their family with the pittance the government pays them. So, seeing my nice, middle class house, they decide to steal some money to feed their kids.

I'm sure you see where this is going. I don't know this man. I don't like him coming into my house. So I kill him. Are you suggesting that (because I was raised in a more affluent area, and hence was given a greater chance for a job than this man) I should be given a minimal sentence, despite the fact that he's just payed with his life for stealing a bit of cash?
