If the tech economy turns to crap and there are lots of newly unemployed programmers sitting around, I'd actually expect the amount of OSS activity to increase somewhat. All those geeks aren't going to turn off their computers and never code again.
And I will go further and suggest that they may do so to help them compete for what jobs remain. Effective development on a free project is one more paragraph on your resume, and one more paragraph of experience can be worth a lot.
I never liked it that way, but it was my ticket out of the dot-com bust.
Was worried by that survey myself. So I went hunting for the actual survey article.
Sounds like they were picking one of several "most important" skills. I would guess(hope) the other 43% chose other options because either they already have a steady supply of developers with problem-solving skills, or they're respondents who are proficient in those other skills hoping for a job.
It's great that you have the sense to try to get out of the way, BUT...
So I tap my brakes to get him to back off, he doesn't. Don't ever do this. Every driving/safety article/video I've ever seen has advised against it, and I don't find it very effective in practice either. When you're dealing with someone who's got any combination of commute frustration, ego, poor understanding of physics, and poor understanding of traffic logistics, there's really nothing you can do with your hands or vehicle to communicate danger to them.

No body likes an spelling/grammer not see.
Has an email server ever been slashdotted?
I don't suppose it's possible to get an exception in the lameness filter for the word "developers," is it? We really need that.

Moral of the thread: The best way to deal with internet bullies is to turn around, and go back to banging your coconuts together.
