How about the CEO taking a paycut from their million dollar a year salary instead of always passing the costs down to the customer. They don't want you to know they make millions while the poor man suffers below the poverty line working for him.

We're talking about a living wage, not getting rich doing menial labor. $5.15 here in michigan is just pathetic (I believe it went up, but I'm not positive on that), and it never includes any kind of health insurance.

This is a travesty in a country as rich as the US.

Congress is exempt from sox because they aren't a for-profit company.

  7. Re:Buy? on Practices of an Agile Developer · · Score: 1

How, may I ask, do you develop? Do you even develop for a living? If you don't, then you can't really make any criticism on agile methods.

Traditional methods (waterfall, prototyping, etc) are just a carry-over from physical manufacturing. You specify requirements, design the product, produce it, sell it to customers, and provide regular maintenance. No one ever stops the assembly line in the middle of an automobile plant saying "whooooaaa hold up, our customers want 4 more square feet in the trunk and the steering wheel on the right side, back it up!." However, this scenario happens all too often in software. Make the wrong design decisions early, and requirements changes later in development can potentially be very costly. In fact, some projects just start over because it's cheaper. Software is a different beast because it is intangible.

Agile methods aren't "planning to not have a plan." Agile's plan is to prepare for future change, and involve the customer in the development process to make sure they are getting exactly what they want. This helps ensure much higher quality in software.

Agile is new, and it's still an immature science with less research behind it than other methods. Is it the silver bullet to software quality problems? Probably not, but then looking for one is a pipe dream. I personally believe a combination of traditional design and agile is the best way to go.

Know why this view is always the case? Because "computer nerds" or technology geeks in general are always criticized for being disconnected from reality. Technology is our hobby, and most people have lives outside of their hobby.

Why is it that you don't hear about NBA stars disconnected from reality? All they do is live in their celebrity. They live, breathe, and eat basketball. When the day is done, they go out to clubs in expensive cars and live the life of a celebrity. Are these people just as disconnected from reality? Absolutely. Are all NBA stars like this? Nope, because its a generalization.

I'm sure there are some computer geeks disconnected from reality, but so are plenty of other people, who are into plenty of other things.

It all comes down to O'Reilly being an idiot and looking to generate some publicity with off-the-wall statements.

A software engineering course shouldn't be teaching any sort of programming language. They should be teaching concepts such as refactoring, requirements engineering, etc. that can be applied to software in any language.

In fact, does it really matter what language a given comp sci course is being taught in? The computer science concepts can be applied to any other language. Anyone can sit down with a book and learn syntax. However, algorithm design and what not need to be taught. Most university classes I've taken in comp sci assume you have knowledge of a modern programming language or require you to learn it on the side because thats not what they're teaching.
