  1. It depends upon business on To Purge Or Not To Purge Your Data · · Score: 2, Informative

For example, Financial institutions are required to keep data for longer period for legal purpose as well as traceability (during investigation of fraud or other kind of crimes). The banks worked for had legal requirement of keeping data at 2 places at least 15 km apart, with all kind of protection against fire and intrusion.

A good manufacturing company would keep data for longer period ot only to comply with ISO standards, but to trace manufacturing defects and a good evidence of past history for insurance company against theft/fire and other kind of problems.

We used to keep daily changes of source code of only previous releases, and purge rest of of the releases (we kept the final source code and patches of all previous releases, but purge daily changes).

In a nutshell, it depends upon your type of bussines.

    Absolutely.

And not only timing, resources, risk assessment, they provide a gateway to interact with other departments and manage the whole process. As a coder, you don't give a shit about how the email servers are being managed OR how your website markets your product, and who is facing the customers understanding their requirements and who is making sure your pay check is deposited in your account OR how the whole place gets cleaned/painted/ managed. It a simple case of delegation of responsibilities, and your manager is no exception.

While attending those project meetings, I always found that, given a choice, a technical person would love to spend 10 million years to build a masterpiece nobody has ever done, and Project Manager would love it, if it was built yesterday, no matter how ugly it looks. Our manager brought good insight into this struggle and made sure things run smooth and he did great. People skills are very important, when you are making a group to work together.

Trust me they digest a lot of shit from their superiors and do not allow that to reach you.

In a nutshell, if someone makes a small request of you that you are likely to agree to, then you will be more likely to agree to a second, larger request, because you will have seen yourself as being helpful in complying with the first request and want to continue being helpful by complying with the second request.

And, if someone makes a large request of you, a request so onerous that most people would not accept it, then you will be more likely to agree to a smaller second request, to a greater extent than you would have had you not been asked the first, more onerous request. The explanation for this is that you are trying to reciprocate on the asker's reducing the size of their request by increasing your willingness to respond to a request beyond what your base level would otherwise be. It's a kind of a subconscious negotiation process that you are engaging in with someone else, basically meeting them halfway.

Now I understand, why my gf refused my second request. But, hell, she should have met me halfway according to your theory.
