I try not to come here too often, it's bad for the soul. But are you telling me that if Sun had released Java 3 and it was.NET2.0 the product would have a longer lifespan? And that Slashdot wouldn't hail it as the new God of code?
The lifespan of a programming language is limited by the moment that something truly better (not just more bells and whistles) comes along, which was I guess my original point.
Yes we got an "Australian Fair Trade Agreement" over here, which basically opens us up to any US laws in the name of 'fair trade'. One of the outcomes of this is that we can now be contacted by your RIAA or MPAA over downloads, where previously they were unable to take action and my ISP had no obligation to cooperate.
I don't know how your post got modded insightful, but then this *is* a site for Linux and Sun fanboys.
dotNET's technology far outstrips Java's in so many respects, and yes, it goes obsolete, much as what we still have for Java should have a long time ago.
As far as migration goes, there were some problems for those of us that jumped on the bandwagon too soon, such as there not being a properly compatible DirectX SDK. These have been sorted since, obviously - this is Micro$oft we're talking about.:-)
The main problems that I found came up were errors in the code that are trapped by better debugging - they've gotten stricter on cross-thread accesses for instance, because the general public now have multi-CPU machines.
Where is that in Java? (Not counting hacky open-source add-ons.) And if you're *really* worried, recommend that your company keep using.NET1.1 because its still supported technology.
As someone who has worked in depth with both technologies, and seeing the migration of.NET to other platforms through Mono, I would not recommend anyone invest serious amounts of time in Java code that can be done with half as much typing in C#.
I don't like everything in.NET2.0, but in the same way I can't go back to Java from.NET1.1 ("Primitives aren't objects? Hh yeah, this is Java... Damn!"), I won't go back from.NET2.0.
I think I've seen pretty much every piece of propaganda used by the US in the last 20 or 30 years trotted around as fact in this one discussion. Sweet!
Hardware? Buying treacherous stuff? Media cartel? Again, what are you talking about that has anything to do with an OS? Would MS be stupid enough to stop people using Windows to pirate music, really? No way, because that would alienate about 90% of their customers. Personally I think it must be a hard line to walk.
*This* is why I laugh when people tell me Linux desktops are getting better.
Ummmm, since when does more colourful/transparent/3D/whatever mean more productive? Why is it that anyone gives a shit about this? Where is the improvements that stop annoying applications stealing focus, force windows to behave nicely, etc?
LMAO, literally. Same shit different day.
I read the Alien vs Predator books in high school. Jesus christ they wrecked that idea.
Where was the post-apocalyptic universe, ravaged by Aliens on every planet, including Earth? The society addicted to lunch-time orgasm pills?
Lame lame lame... Movies can never be as good as books, even with multi-million dollar special effects. I have to say LOTR was well done, but still missed everything good, like Tom Bombadil(lo-oh):-p
Seriously, when is someone going to make a non executable GUI language for doing this stuff with? Can it be that hard to make a VM that's constrained to drawing in one window?
I for one think our new internet overlords should consider that most people either are or soon will be equipped with an arsenal of software designed to foist attempts to take over a browser window in the kind of way this sort of thing will require.
That's more than 2c, but I'm feeling generous today.
Actually where I'm standing there isn't much difference in price. Probably the reason you are getting them cheap is because your shop had to bust open the packaging on a boxed CPU to replace someone's cooler (someone who didn't want to pay $50 for something that looks like a UFO with lights all over it). That really sux for me (as the shop owner), but who the hell wants to buy a CPU without the recommended cooling? Also, the average Joe is not interested in purchasing high quality thermal paste or otherwise renewing the shitty stuff every six months - "Nah I'll just wait till you get more CPUs in" - so the price has to be pretty attractive for someone to take it off your hands.
IAACSO (I am a computer shop owner) and I see this sort of thing a lot.
If your computer works *flawlessly* between power outages then your hardware is probably fine. Whatever software is running, despite what Linux users may believe from their own experiences, Windows XP is solid enough to reboot even when you leave files open and crash. It even backs up all your system files (unless you've got system restore switched off) to avoid you losing anything that is needed to get the computer booting. So it's not your software either, provided you've told us everything...
Finally, as most people here are suggesting, you could get a UPS. Before you shell out for that though, I'd try a nice fresh new PSU. Trust me - a flaky PSU will make a rig *tap-dance* at random:-).
Peace, and good luck. If you have any more problems drop your rig back in to the shop^H^H^H^H^H^H^H over to Australia and we'll take a look at it for you.:-D
Actually.NET performs very well and while the distributed code is an intermediate form of machine code it is JIT compiled and having run some tests I can tell you that average code written in C# ends up being just as fast as C++ in the end, although of course in C++ you can do more tricks to make things really fast.
The API is at least as extensive as Java's and IMHO Visual Studio is the only way to build Windows Apps. Your friend is quite right to swear by it, MS really did get quite a few things right with.NET.
Don't want to detract from all those free tools out there but MS's developer tools ARE the shit.
Please stop calling copyright infringement theft. It is not theft. Theft deprives someone of something. Copyright infringement is a wholly separate thing. You are stupid. Thank you.
Please stop posting this and getting modded up by your fanboys every time something like this comes up. Whilst technically copyright infringement is not theft, as an artist when people copy my work without paying for it I am ripped off and I will call you a thief to your face.
Adding this as 'informative' to every discussion on copyright is downright insulting to people's intelligence and is laughable given that every reason you have for committing piracy is moral and yet you hide behind technicalities like this to avoid feeling guilty about what you do. You are assholes AND thieves. Thank you.
Don't stress your brain. Just consider that with any alphabet being used by being with physical vocal cords or equivalent hardware, there will be an overwhelming majority of 10-letter combinations that are invalid. Thus the probability that there exists a set of words that matches the constraints of the puzzle basically comes down to what we are all talking about - does this word actually exist in the language.
I for one think that if this guy did do the problem by hand he was very clever, whether nones-event is a word or not. The fact is, there just aren't that many 10 letter words, and the constraints on this problem produce a very sparse solution space, as someone already pointed out.
It's nice to see that while we all find the shortest most elegant string of Perl to format your enemies hard-drives someone is working in the opposite direction with far less logical tasks, but coming up with things that amaze us none the less.
...is for everyone here who works in a military or government or large corporate workplace to take these CDs to work. Get the rootkit installed on your local machines, then anonymously tip off the sysadmin (if it isn't you - if it is, 'alert' (but don't alarm) your boss).
Then we will see the shit hit the fan - Sony will be taken into custody without being charged for up to 28 days under the new anti-terrorist (read anti-freedom-of-speech) laws.
We just got our version passed here in Australia (thanks again to the US for giving the idiots here ideas). Luckily, so-far you can only go missing for two weeks before it's 'illegal' here.
I fix it on computers every day. Error messages like 'Well, basically something fucked up, error: 0x80DD0007'. Which are nowhere to be found in any help files from microsoft. 'Check your update history' - yeah, it's empty.
When you submit an error lookup from MS update, it takes you to the search page. Hmmm... right so what did I just submit?
Even when it's 'working', it will take about half an hour to do a web update if your automatic updates are already going, regardless of connection speed. Why does verifying a file take soooo long when it was already half downloaded?
The nerve of these idiots, to produce something that is their front line of defense for 'Ma and Pa Computer User', and have it fail so dismally in every aspect of usage, is quite outrageous. The sad thing is people continue to walk into my shop every day with that sad look on their face - the computer is doing something wierd *again*. It is just so frustrating when what is wrong is simply Microsoft's software.
In case you ever have this problem:
1) Scan for spyware, it loves to take over/mess up automatic updates. 2) If enabling the services BITS, Auto Updates, Event Viewer (the only help MS does provide) doesn't work, try deleting everything inside C:\WINDOWS\Software Distribution. You may have to stop the services you just started and kill a few apps in order to release all the files. 3) If this doesn't work, try deleting things in Downloaded Program Files (this is where the auto-update activeX lives). A better way to do this is with Spybot, since it will give you a little bit of info on what each activeX is (they are in directories by COM GUID, yet another piece of good planning by MS).
Anyway, there's my 2c AND some help on how to fix automatic updates. What were we talking about again?
Are you talking about say, when King Henry decided that it was OK to divorce your wife, just so that he could? For anyone who missed it, I'm talking about the birth of the Protestant faith. You know - those guys that kill Catholics over whether or not it's OK to have unprotected sex in the safety of your own home?
Argue all you like, there is no place for this in today's society, and to live your life the way someone else thinks it should be lived is to me, completely illogical.
Is anybody here doing life for the second time? Anyone here got everything worked out? Reckon goat farmers and carpenters 2000 years ago did? I guess that's the biggest thing for me - it's not the word of God people believe, it's ONE translation of ONE copy of ONE undoubtedly cloudy issue!
In fact to suggest that someone could even begin to write down a single word of God's master plan would be blasphemous would it not?!?
While the interviewee is fully entitled to his views, it pains me to see people close their minds after having read a third translation of a 2000 year old book on how life is. Clearly this is not what this person has done, but every day the world suffers as a result of the largest military power being driven by religious old farts who have. Anybody ever noticed how the Muslims and Hindus *always* get fucked in the end?
I guess people who are familiar with Linux probably found the article intensely humorous, despite its obvious deficiencies. As someone who recently tried to set up gentoo, I couldn't read on.
Are we REALLY still in the days where a non-graphical front end still hides behind everything? Must we seriously edit text files using nano or vi or something other unbearable piece of sh*t to configure our systems? At least Window's 'cmd' is an obvious fake - it's just there as an alternative way to launch programs, not that Windows ever had a proper shell in the first place...
I'm not going to start on this debate, but seriously, stuff like this just isn't funny to someone trying to learn or worse - migrate.
Has anybody had a sensible thing to add to this my OS vs your OS thing in the last 20 years? Certainly not on slashdot.
...so you whacked on Norton Internet, Car and Household Security 2006 and suddenly your rig turned into a complete hoe.
Has anybody mentioned AVG? I use this at home and on all my (non-business) client's computers and it seems to be quick to update, has heuristic analysis (which is what we are talking about), and has your resident+email scanner and auto update.
For P2P I just keep my IP blocker up-to-date. I find my computer runs as normal most of the time, as opposed to those business clients running Norton's.
Norton *is* the virus goddammit. If everybody uninstalls Norton's there will be no more viruses!:-)
I try not to come here too often, it's bad for the soul. But are you telling me that if Sun had released Java 3 and it was .NET2.0 the product would have a longer lifespan? And that Slashdot wouldn't hail it as the new God of code?
The lifespan of a programming language is limited by the moment that something truly better (not just more bells and whistles) comes along, which was I guess my original point.
Dupe, flamebait. Why do you publish this crap.
Do you honestly believe something will go obsolete while people are willing to pay for it? LMFAO.
Thanks for the clarification. The point is they no longer need court orders to begin harassment.

Yeah. DRM. If you have it installed and use that software and DRM'ed material. Why does my DRM'ed W2k3 still play all my MP3s? BECAUSE IT CAN.
Sooooo sick of hearing about DRM this DRM that. Anyone would think a Windows install can't rip a CD.
Just shut up about it, or at least learn what the hell you're talking about.
