  1. Re:Missing the point, I think. on Microsoft Looking to Run Windows on OLPC · · Score: 1

Competition should be about various parties working against each other on a basically level playing field, using the actual advantages of their respective products and offerings. So in this mythical land of fair competition, what's the score of your average baseball game?

My point was not that M$ shouldn't cheat or that cheating is right, I just implied that I understand why the cheating takes place. This cheating will never stop, even if M$ is crushed someone else will rise up and cheat away, there is just too much money at state for this kind of activity not to take place. My point was that if Linux relied simply on their innovation and openness then, level playing field or not, it would not take too long for people to realize that the shit being pumped down their throat is, in fact, shit and why eat shit when you are standing next to a garden with the statue of a penguin standign in it holding a sign that says 'free'.

Isn't this what competition is about? I realize M$ does not always--alright never--compete fairly but if Linux will ever take a substantial chunk of M$'s customers away, it will need to do so on the back of innovation and openness. We can not just hope that M$ will stop playing dirty, it makes them billions of dollars and whenever that much money is thrown around who wouldn't round a few corners to make sure that the private chopper always has enough gas?

In fact, I think we should hold these champions of Windows 95 up as examples. They have been immune to the Windows-upgrade hype since the beginning. Either that or they have just been waiting for Vista for a reaaaaaaaaaaaaly long time.

I've always had a thing for intel motherboards, at least when building computers for use at work. Something about having an intel chipset on an intel board always seemed to result in fewer motherboard setup problems. Sure some of the tweaking was not there, but for the "it just needs to work" systems i wasn't looking for tweaking. The only problem was having to use an intel processor. Now that nVidia is making motherboards, or so it seems, this should create a reliable solution in the AMD-flavor of motherboards. Now to convince my boss...

I went to a large state school and never had any such professors. If I even only had one or two courses with professors like that, I would probably feel very differently about college. As it is, it seems like the vast majority of colleges are just high school v2.0 (same boring stuff, more party).

I am a state school grad myself, a school known for its parties and its riots (when you try to take the parties away) but I still had four professors I considered brilliant. I was lucky, however, because I studied literature and philosophy, two disciplines that attract the best minds towards teaching. I would imagine that this is not the case with computer science and other practical fields.

As a native of the north I would like to go on the record saying that it really is not that bad. People who live in the north tend to love the winter and the opportunities it offers.
