  1. Re:Not quite the processor wars... on Microsoft Confirms New Music Player · · Score: 1

Ok, in a sense agree with you. It is a pain in the ass 'working around' all of the crap built into itunes and the ipod, but do you seriously think M$ will be better? My perception of Apple's handling of DRM on the ipod/itunes is just enough to keep the RIAA happy. After all, I can still find all of my music files on my ipod and drag them on to any computer I hook it up to. Sure the file names are all messed up, but the music plays. I realize that this only applies to non-itunes purchased songs, but it is still something.

In addition, didn't Apple go against the will of the RIAA when they tried to introduce a new pricing model for songs on itunes? Without the leverage of Apple, we would be paying $2.50 for the new Taylor Hicks songs (by we I means someone much less cool than the typical /.er). So maybe I need to restate part of my previous comment. Apple might not be the "good guy" but they definitely are the better guy when coming up against M$.

  2. Not quite the processor wars... on Microsoft Confirms New Music Player · · Score: 1

The processor wars were great for the consumers. AMD had a better product and they just seemed like such a lovable company. However in this portable media player war, the market leader is already the good guy. So my question is what happens when the underdog is not someone to pull for? Leave it to M$ to ruin the concept of the underdog.

  3. Why is anyone surprised? on EFF Calls RIAA Tactics 'Reign of Terror' · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is what happens when you have a government that can be purchased. Make no mistake about it, in the US laws/justice/rights/people/myself is for sale and the RIAA/MPAA is buying. As long as they have money they will be able to manipulate any system set up in the US to serve their needs.

Bringing the term "God complex " to retarded new heights, this recent RPG's titular redundancy is truly unholy.
Aside from the fact they use "retarded" in their description, Gamespot actually gives this an '8.6 Great' rating. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/divinedivinity/inde x.html?q=Divine%20Divinity.

  7. Protect Innovation on On Software Patent Lawsuits Against OSS · · Score: 5, Insightful

"Only legislative changes to the patent system can fully protect Open Source and maintain it as a viable source of innovation for our future." Legislative changes to the patent system are needed to protect innovation not just the Open Source community. How can anyone continue to innovate if they have to wade through an endless array of patents just to see if their idea isn't covered by some ridiculous patent.

I remember the days when technology was exciting. Every new product promised so much possibility and opportunity. Hell, some of them even made me want to run out and buy the thing. These days, however, new technology just leaves me feeling sick. I find myself buying more and more tin foil, holding on to my relics of the 90's and talking about the good old days when a computer and a fast connection could get you anything but in trouble. But what can your average /. reader do? I suppose I should just settle my suit with the RIAA, buy another DVD copy of Dr. Strangelove because the first is too scratched up to play, hope Sony's rootkit will magically remove itself from my computer, and watch another 22 minutes of commercials in a half-hour re-run of Seinfeld.

let me see. I have a crappy OS (Windows) that I have to patch once a month. I have many crappy browsers that also need to be patched from time to time. I have a software firewall that needs patching plus antivirus, anti-spyware, office apps, email clients, photo programs, games... And now I also have to patch my CD's. Great! Hey, I have a better idea, why not just sell us an upgraded music CD that has a patched DRM? As long as it's at least $5 more than the first one I bought I'll have the assurance of spending the most money possible while also having 16 copies of Jessica Simpson's new CD.

Then when someone talks about something I produce, let's just say I produce the super bowl, I can fine them for infringing upon my intellectual property. My motto can be something like, "I'm all for you enjoying the game, just keep that enjoyment to yourself." Hell I could probably fine people for cheering at a game. Their cheering might alert people on the streets, people who did not pay to see the game, that something cool just happened like the home team just won the game.
