    True. Same goes for Canvas.

few companies have the manpower/skill to create a dynamic (animation-friendly) design/development environment targeted at web *designers*

This is true - there are some IDEs but they are mostly targeted to SVG in the mobile space. This is looking like it's starting to change though.

Canvas is a much simpler and smaller standard

True. Another way of saying this is "SVG is more powerful" ;). See: DOM integration, event handling, linking, styling, fonts, filters. As with everything you have to pick the right technology for what you need.

It really depends where they are in the release cycle. Currently Minefield is stable enough because they are at Firefox 3.1 Beta 2. Months ago, that was not the case. Once Firefox 3.1 is released, that will also not be the case...

Metaphorically's point still stands: Minefield is not a new browser, it simply a nightly build of the Firefox 3.1 codebase and as such, hasn't had the stability testing that the betas and release candidates and even the alphas get.

I also note that this namespace behavior change also allows inline XAML within HTML. How convenient for Microsoft. Renesis is an effort to develop a browser plugin for SVG. It's still not on par with ASV (only Opera and Batik really beat ASV's SVG support). Anyway, as with most plugins, the concept is to give away the plugin and sell the content-generation tools (SVG editor, etc). I'm still waiting to hear more from examotion on Renesis... sometime in 1Q08 supposedly.

The scenario they seem to be enabling for SVG is inline SVG with HTML content (not XHTML). This means that you can install the Adobe SVG Viewer and have it render the inline SVG within the HTML page. Unfortunately it seems like there may be some implementation issues with it (possibly preventing the xlink namespace within the SVG). See the now-available whitepaper and the discussion here

  9. Isn't This Part Of A Strategy? on Gates Expresses Surprise Over IE8 Secrecy · · Score: 3, Insightful

Does anyone else find it odd that Bill Gates didn't know this? I'd like to hear (off the record) from Molly on whether she believes him. Putting my tinfoil hat aside for a minute, it just seems obvious that the silence, which has engendered so much hatred and negativity from the development community, must surely be a part of some type of strategy. And shouldn't Bill be aware of that strategy?

Even if they haven't committed on certain features or levels of compliancy, this surely does not mean complete silence. Disappointment about delivery of features can be expected, but usually it's tempered with some amount of understanding in the face of transparency and intentions.

So to me, the silence is a strategy. The choices are:

    - they're not planning on implementing the standards that people expect (CSS, DOM, SVG, XHTML) so they want to avoid fact-based criticism for as long as possible. The longer they wait, the more people may fall in love with Silverlight?
    - they're planning on implementing standards and they want to surprise the hell out of the developers (to have them come rushing and gushing back to the fold).

Ok, so I'm foolishly hoping it's the latter strategy (I've heard they do have a new layout engine they're working on). But the longer they wait, the more people will expect.

It must be fairly obvious to them by now that most developers realize just how far behind standards compliancy IE is. Seriously, they are the _ONLY_ major browser out there with: its own DOM, its own event handling, its own vector graphics (VML/Silverlight) and woefully behind CSS implementation. EVERY other browser gives a shot at supporting SVG - where are they with that? They haven't even TOUCHED the spec yet!

I agree that it seems like you'd spend most of your time removing false positives. I'm not totally adverse to the idea, but like a lot of people posting I just don't see how it could be done effectively - maybe that means I'm getting old...

Programming is different than languages that we use to speak - vocabulary and style are nearly unbounded, abbreviations are common-place, etc. You can make up the words as you go along...

Is "refererr" a spelling mistake? Maybe it refers to some error? Maybe they were trying for "referrer"?

    What about "Srvc"? "Servc"? "Servce"?

What about "funcy" ? Is it a function pointer or the word "fancy" or the word "funky" ? Does "funCy" make a difference?

To get this anywhere near effective, it seems like you'd have to impose some restrictions on style and variable naming, and yes - I consider that restriction a bad thing.
