My best friend owns a $4500** Dell XPS laptop that he uses mainly for work (using Maya and Photoshop). I forget all the specs but I do know it has a Geforce 6800 video card. The thing is a beast, it's has a 17" widescreen and weighs a ton, but the real kicker is the heat output. The bottom of his laptop must be atleast 90C while hes using it to render a scene. I doubt it even lasts 2 hours just on battery power.
**At the time (1-2 years ago) he paid $4500, if he bought it today it would probably be closer to $2500
EA has ruined more of my childhood memories than George Lucas. People should be boycotting them until they change their business tactics. If we sit around and do nothing, maybe one day EA will be the only game company and then what will we do.
EA pretty much bought and killed all my favourite childhood game companies.
Bullfrog, Maxis, Interplay, Westwood, Origin Systems, I believe they also now own Blizzard.
I'm sure there's others that I have forgotten about, lost to the 800lbs gorilla that is EA. May they rest in piece.
Of course GameCubes don't go down, they're designed for kids. Nintendo would be in huge trouble if parents found out the GameCube was going down on their kids.

I thought they were called "exploits". I guess you're using the "it's not a bug, it's a feature" mentality:)
I don't think you understand (most likely you didn't RTFA). It's not about the system being "in standby" and using power, it's about the system being OFF and using power while still plugged into the wall. i.e: To keep the internal clock up to date it uses power even with the power switch is "off". On the xbox 360 you can remotely turn on the console by using the wireless controllers. In order for this to work, the xbox 360 has to keep the wireless controller part powered in order to receive the "wake up" message from the controller, so even when the system is off, it still draws power. The only solution is to unplug the system completely (if you want to save $2-3 a year).
Centrino is a platform marketing initiative from Intel for a particular combination of CPU, mainboard chipset and wireless network interface in the design of a laptop personal computer.
>Tried an alpha build on a dual processor 1.3ghz xeon box with 512mb ram and it ran like molasses in the winter, mainly because it was paging so much stuff to disk (lord knows what, I hadn't installed anything but the os)...
That's most likely because Microsoft released a debug build (it is a beta after all) so it would be easier to find bugs. Debug builds usually run much slower than release builds, one of the reasons being debug builds are usually constantly writing extra verbose information to the hard drive for easier debugging incase of a crash. Also debug builds usually always have all compiler optimizations disabled, where as the release has most/all optimizations enabled. That could be why there was so much paging to disk, I could be wrong though, I haven't tried any of the Vista betas.
I'd say the biggest problem is the push for better and better graphics, neglecting the gameplay. Some games still manage to produce gorgeous worlds with awesome gameplay, but most seem to neglect the latter. I've enjoyed UT2004 for over a year because the gameplay is awesome and has nice graphics to boot. I was disapointed with Doom3 and HalfLife2 which had arguable much better graphics but lacked multiplayer gameplay. HalfLife2 didn't even come with a CTF mode built in for multiplayer, only deathmatch! Welcome to 1990! Doom3's multiplayer support was even worse, like a last minute addon (which it pretty much was). Some might argue that it's hard to compare UT2004 to HalfLife2 and Doom3 since UT2004 is primarly a multiplayer game (singleplayer mode is just bot fighting), and Doom3 and HalfLife2 focused more on the single player mode. Maybe that's why I find UT2004 has more replay value, once I finished doom3 and halflife2 a couple times I don't really have the desire to play it again (the story is decent at best).
Considering that Ghost is going to be a first person shooter, then I am hoping and believe that the MMO version of Starcraft will likely be a first person shooter as well.
Starcraft Ghost was cancelled a few months ago, where have you been? (lemme guess, trapped inside WoW?)
8 years is enough Blizzard, give us something with zerglings!
There already is a recent game with zerglings (well, kinda). If you bought the Collectors edition of WoW, you can choose a Zergling, Mini-Diablo or Panda as an in-game pet IIRC.
This is kind of retarded. It's a cool-looking mouse, there's no doubt about that, but just because it looks cool is no reason to buy it. This looks like just another way to take money from geeks with too much time to play WoW and other such things. It's overpriced, and it's sales pitch doesn't make sense at all. However, it will probably appeal to people who will pay for epic mounts and ships and weapons for MMORPG's.
The mouse doesn't look that special. It looks almost identical to the old Razer Diamondback. I actually purchased the Diamondback 6 to 8 months ago for $50 Canadian. It's probably the best mouse I've ever owned, very comfortable and the my accuracy in FPS games is amazing.
You obviously didn't play the recent remake of Pirates! Sid Meier screwed up huge on that one. I used to love Sid Meier as a child, but he really turned out a hunk of crap on this one.
The difference is that Apple is intentionally and artifically restricting the ability of consumers to use a product on other companies hardware.
Didn't Microsoft do that with DR-DOS and Windows 3.1? Anyway, lots of companies do this all the time to protect their products. Doesn't Apple also artificially restrict OSX so it only works on their hardware?
I don't know how this got modded insightful, while I too hate the RIAA, your comment is completely off-topic. TFA is about how Apple is operating a business in a country and not abiding by said country's laws. How you can blame this on the RIAA, I don't know.
Oops, I apologize =)
I can't believe how many people don't RTFA! *blushes*
FYI: The slashdot summary is incorrect, the article correctly states it as 15megabits/sec.
I can't believe how many people posting on slashdot don't know the difference between MB/s (megabytes/sec) and Mb/sec (megabits/sec). This is a site for geeks right?
Cable is 10megabit/sec (1.25 megabytes/sec), this guys fiber connection is 15 megabytes/sec (or 120 megabit/sec). There are 8 bits in a byte FYI.
Funny. I didn't realize there were any 2D human cells. Maybe that's how Flat Stanley was able to slide under the door.
Lol. I thought all cells have a thickness, it's just microscopic. I've seen my own red blood cells under a microscope before and they look alot like little red donuts (Red Blood Cells.
but things like organs taht match the one that needs them perfectly should be allowed.
I agree, considering there are some bad consequences when getting an organ transplant. Some transplant patients have to take drugs for the rest of their life to prevent their body from rejecting the implant. If they could make organs from peoples own cells, there would be no organ rejection and no need for all the drugs.
Blizzard isnt always about pretty graphics like alot of other companies its all about game play!!
Blizzard's graphics are awesome IMO. The drawing style they use allows for low-polygon models that still look good, it helps that they use lots of pretty colours. Plus their cutscenes are like works of art, even the cutscene from Warcraft2 dos version. They have some really talented graphics people IMO. They're going for a fantasy look, not realistic, so they don't need to have realistic looking lighting or water, etc.. I love the colours they use in their Warcraft 3 maps. Definitely a "fantasy" feeling.

I thought the Wii was powered by little magic mushrooms with smiley faces, or maybe I'm just hallucinating.

My original PS2 is still working great, over 5 years later...

I agree, Blizzard makes A+ games IMO. Remember the cutscenes for Warcraft 2 ? They were way ahead of their time.
