i was looking at getting a new laptop to use between work and home.. i wanted soemthing extremaly light and usable.. i was in a toss up .. buy a cheap eeepc and give it a try or dump a good sum of money on a purpos built ultra light..

by boss got an EeePC to play with .. so i used it for a day.. while i have to say it is a wonderful thing.. it is not something i would want to do any real amount of work on.

instead i got in on the dell latitude clearence they did in Feb.. picked up a D420.. with media base.. it weights in at 2.8lbs with extended battery.. i get 6 1/2 hours on a full charge.. a nice 1280x800 screen size.. Intel Core Duo at 1G. 1.5g of ram and 80gb drive .. tack on a media base with dvd burner and DVI out.. that acts as a docking station.. paid 1100$ all said and done.. sure it is 2-3x the price of an EeePC.. but it beats the living crap out of it..

the EeePC falls into a gray area of the market.. if i had a kid.. yea an EeePC all the way.. but if i was going to use this thing on a dail basis.. i would have to some how shrink my fingers

sure there is power loss - but we are also making great improvements in supper conductors that do not need to be cooled to near 0k to work..

why can't we start this now.. build them and connected them to the grid.. get power to the closer to home places without much loss and keep building and sending the excess power out even with loss to help compensate for other power needs.

and as we develop more superconductor tech we can install it in the long run's first and get the best of both worlds.. we get something useful now and something amazing later..

why not stop and say .. no more coal plants.. only solar/nuke.. mainly solar.. build over capacity to compensate for the loss over distance.. and as we improve tech stop the loss which will help as power demands are more than likly going to increase.

i would be more than happy to pay 2x as much as i do now for power if it would help stop acid rain from coal plants in 50 years.

anyone that looks at this as lets do it all at once - but wait till we are damn sure it will solve all the problems before we change are ways.. is stupid in my opion

i obey the speed limit and stop ar red lights.. but i don't feel it is fair for them to change things on people just to extort money out of them.. and example is where i live.. in down town.. on the main road there is 8 lghts i have to go through each day. only 2 of them have red light cameras one near the middle and one at the end of the road. the lights are in sequence so that if you get stopped by one light and wait it out then the rest will be green for you if you are doing the speed limit. BUT the yellow lights on ONLY the two lights that have cameras are 3 seconds shorter than the rest. all the normal interchanges have very long yellows and the two that have cameras have yellows that are less than half the time of the others.

that to me is wrong.. because a driver has no warning that they have shortened the yellow light - it should be standard..

i know people are going to say "well when it turns yellow you stop - no problem" but the yellow is so short that it is an issue.. not all cars can go form 35-0 in 30-40 feet not all cars have ABS to assist.. and god forbid it when it is raining.
