What does Ubuntu for Phones offer that android doesn't? (honest question as I haven't used it)
Well I can see the business reason behind not releasing, isn't Ubuntu built around the concept of open source? If they released it and it became super popular on another distro then that would prove the market for something other then just android/iOS/Windows and possibly pave the way for the Ubuntu Edge?
Last I checked they hadn't released the code for all of us to play with... if they aren't going to do anything with the code anyways, why not release it so I can break my phone trying to install it? err... install it on my phone. I for one love the concept and would definitely be interested in the project.
What was being added? (honest sincere question) I thought the dems were against the piecemeal strategy, because they wanted to maintain pressure against the reps... didn't know the reps were adding things into it.
I don't think its that they are missing those features as much as they aren't marketing them as much as office etc. I'm not getting a tablet for office, so if they are only marketing for that I certainly wouldn't look at the surface. If they mixed in other apps, then I would possibly look at it and oh hey it does office too, cool. I think that was what the OP was trying to say.
Honestly I love lugging my gigantic laptop around, love having the power to do whatever, but that's just me.
Guns have no other purpose than to kill people. You might argue that you need one for hunting, sure, but then you don't need to own anything more than a shotgun with a maximum of 3 shells..
Have you ever even gone hunting? I have and you sir do not understand it.
Relating to cars NOT if you only drive them on your land. I do not need to license my car OR have a drivers license to drive them on my own land (think farmer) as for registration thats mainly to account for stolen vehicles etc. As for guns you ALSO have to fill out registration etc when buying certain guns. My.40 is registered to me and if i ever want to sell it I will FOR SURE pass that registration off to the person who buys it, then I am not liable for what happens with that gun. See there already is that system in place!
The chemicals that can make an IED aren't illegal because they are commonly used for other purposes. By your logic we should make cars, any common chemical that could possibly sorta be kinda used in a an IED or anything that has caused death illegal or HEAVILY restricted, and in some cases they are others not so much.
I actually enjoy guns for other purposes then killing people, or killing anything for that matter. They are fun to practice marksmanship or shot targets with.
My point is you cant legislate away stupid or homicidal. Most laws only really affect those that follow them.
IED's may be illegal but that doesn't mean you can't make one or that people wont. All it does ensure is that if they make one and use it (and don't kill themselves) then they could have another charge added to their long list of laws broken.
Question for you: Do you think that guns have no legislation at all? That I can just go buy any gun that I want? Its like most of the weapons you listed, I have to have the permits etc etc to even think about owning any of those items the same applies to certain guns. Some guns are near impossible to own legally and thats for a good reason. The guns that are legal now I see no problem for law abiding citizens to own.
And IEDs (improvised explosive device) are nonexistent and wouldn't do more damage then any gun anyways... right?
In the end its still people that cause the problems why not try and address what caused the wound instead of trying to lessen the blow the next time?
On a more personal opinion, if they're doing doctorate like research I would be inclined to believe that they would be smart enough to find guns no matter how hard you push papper (make laws) at them. I mean their planning on killing people which is way worse then owning an illegal gun so why should they care if they break 2 or 3 laws more.
Indeed but at least in OSX the interface is much simpler and less annoying. I can select to update the things that wont cause a reboot and then say "not now" to the things that will and it wont remind me i have updates every 15 minutes and ask to restart. In fact i have an update that I've been putting off for a few weeks and I cant even remember the last time it asked me to install it and it NEVER just installs it then asks me to restart ever 15 min - 4 hours.
Why is this down voted?!? as a web developer I wish IE 6 would disappear into a deep dark recess and never come out! For the site I develop we stopped supporting it ages ago and instead post a banner that basically says "HEY! STOP IT! Upgrade or get a different browser you ninnys"... something like that if I remember right.
Hi I'm on a mac, and I don't use windows unless I have to... I'd say 99% of the time I don't. Now you know a mac user that doesn't spend most of his time in windows.
Your welcome.
Seriously though I only use windows for... well windows applications and normally I can find an OSX program or a port of a Linux program for free to do what I need to do.
No one can kill as many people as quickly with a knife as one can with a semi-automatic gun. This is a fact. If you lined up 30 humans and had someone slit their throats as quickly as possible, it still wouldn't be as fast as a gun.
You are absolutely right about that, unfortunately your missing the point that its still some crazy person trying to kill 30 people not the gun. While its easier to sit and fire 30 rounds into the crowd I could just as easily run around slashing people with a knife thankfully there are good people with the ability to contain the bad people because they have the same if not better force/weapon/abilities.
Bad guys will always always always find a way to get what they need (guns, drugs, whatever) regardless if its following the law or not (thats why they are called bad guys). I for one want to make sure the good guys continue to have the same if not better weapons/abilities.
Imagine what would happen if we banned guns? well just look what happened when we made certain drugs illegal. Did those drugs just disappear and nobody was able to get any of them? no. But it made it so the good guys could throw the book at them when people where caught with them. We already have laws that are in place for people that have real assault weapons etc. What more do you want?
How? Please explain. I don't see any reason why banning them would prevent bad guys from using them to bad things, bad guys don't follow the law already!
Did banning illegal drugs actually stop them from being used and people over dosing on them?
I didn't know drugs were illegal.
I'm not sure where you live but in the US I can't just go use cocaine legally whenever I would like, yet it is everywhere. The same concept applies to gun control, the only people your going to stop are law following citizens.
Did banning illegal drugs actually stop them from being used and people over dosing on them?
Personally I don't think banning will do anything productive in relation to gun violence etc. I grew up in a farming community and we were taught how to use and treat guns from an early age and because of that we did just that. Right now I think its better for us to focus on educating people about guns and best practices then just blindly banning all guns.
I, personally (and yes i realize you might disagree), would want a hand gun to defend my family if an intruder were to come into my house AND I, personally, really enjoy taking out my AR-15 (not an assault rifle by definition), XD-m 40, 12 gauge, or any gun I can get my hands on and having some fun practicing AND I, personally, enjoy hunting with the various firearms for food for my family. Of course all of my gun use is done using correct safety precautions. I'm very very very careful with who i bring with me and I always make sure that they really do understand gun safety even if they say they already do. There has been more then one time when I've had to correct people because they just want to do what they've seen in movies instead of actually being safe and that is the real problem, idiots. To put it in a more gently people who are uneducated about guns and gun use.
Now gun control biased moderaters fire away with your -1's
crap you got me beat! I've only been using since 3.11, but then again I always exited and went to DOS anyways.
I see this "metro controversy" as a non-issue at a time when so many people own smartphones/tablets and add apps with random UIs on them. so why should familiarity be more important than usability if all websites look different and all apps have their "skin"?
But my grandma (who is the person that will eventually have windows 8) only uses her select programs and every time something new happens her brain cant handle it and it requires many phone calls/written down tutorials of how to navigate until she gets used to it. Honestly I'm just selfishly not wanted to have to support/explain that with all my "non-techie" family members because they always call me for anything relating to the computer, regardless if its something I can "fix" or not.
"yes grandma, click the blue 'e'... now type in the address bar... the bar at the to... no the one that says something like 'www.' something... ahhh screw it I'm just going to install a screen sharing program, be over in a couple of minutes"

Why isn't this enabled by default!?!? Who wouldn't want to copy|paste to the console?
