Number one rule when dealing with cops: Never volunteer information that was not specifically asked for.
Exactly! I go even further though... When I get pulled over, I simply don't answer any of their questions or say anything at all. And they often ask a lot of stuff that is none of their business. (I've been pulled over more than once for traffic violations). We all have a right to not incriminate ourselves. I have such a low opinion of cops at this point that even just seeing them out on the street pulling someone else over pisses me off.
While the prize is officially named "The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel", it has been referred to in popular culture, public media, scholarly works and encyclopedias as the "Nobel Prize in Economics", or more rarely as the "Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences."
"[F. A.] Hayek's work...is central to my own thinking about how to manage the Wikipedia project.
I would not label the work of nobel prize winner FA Hayek as being a "far out political bias". Especially as opposed to Keynesian econ. I can understand some of your points, but using them to express your own political opinions doesn't do much to add to your arguments.
Libertarians wouldn't call this privatization, either. This is still government-funded research done by government contractors. Libertarians would call this "corporate welfare."
Of course you are exactly right. The government monopoly over scientific research is what has led us to these unfortunate circumstances. I wonder why people insist on calling things like this "privitization". Are they ignorant or just plain dishonest? It's the same ballpark as forcing private social security acccounts or hiring security contractors to conduct wars.
While I have sympathy for your situation, every single (US) soldier who is pulling a trigger is a volunteer. "I was only following orders" stopped being a valid excuse for government-sanctioned murder a loooong time ago in an all-volunteer army.
This is exactly why I disagree with the whole "support the troops" rhetoric. I do not support people who kill others in foreign lands. People must know that this is what they will be doing when they volunteer to join the army. You don't want to give politicians an excuse to maintain troops in over half the countries of the world? Don't let them send you. Don't fall for their "defending america" line.
I buy CDs, rip, and sell them again. I would personally rather do this than download, because downloading can be a pita sometimes. Especially for finding certain rare things. Of course, they definitely don't want me selling things again either, because they don't get a dime from that. When online vendors like amazon marketplace stop allowing resell, that is when I stop buying music all together.
Does anyone else find it ironic that a library, of all organizations, is (supposedly) exercising its IP rights?
I don't find it at all ironic that a government institution is striving to control any possible information that it can about itself. Especially that it will threaten the use of force in order to do so.
these coincidences of timing in the software world never cease to boggle the mind!
Coincidence? No, it's obviously an orcestrated effort by Steve Jobs to take over the world. Now that they have Microsoft and Sun eating out of their palms, it's only a matter of time. Watch out Google, the Macs are coming for you!
Along with this explosion of information, I wonder how governments will be able to maintain their collective grips on society as a whole. Never before has access to anti-government information been so readily available. Maybe they will have to rely on ever more draconian measures to maintain the status quo - but I hope not.
I definitely wish my parents had homeschooled me as well. Part of it is because of crap like this, but part of it is simply that I thought high school was a complete waste. It is absolutely not a safe environment for children. I could imagine that violent kids would not be nearly as much of a problem were school not compulsory as mandated by the State. I do plan on homeschooling my kids, once I get some, if I have the means.
In the aftermath of recent events, such paranoia can be understandable. But then again, even in normal circumstances, I wouldn't expect anything more from the public school system.
If you accept that tariffs and subsidies are bad for consumers, and cause higher prices, then it doesn't matter which country does them, the US included. I never said there is such a mythical land, as you mention. One can dream though, can't they? In the meantime, we should fight such market distortions as best we can.
It must be mentioned that the Indian government and its autonomous regulatory bodies are very proactive in holding the consumer interests above the operators', managing to reduce the long distance and wireless tariffs by a up to factor of 20 in less than 7 years."
If they were really pro-consumer, they wouldn't have any tariffs to begin with. All this statement does is congratulate them for reducing a situation they caused in the first place. Hardly "proactive".
I wonder what kind of affect this will have on their share prices. Maybe if they go down enough maybe there be a buying opportunity in there somewhere...
Where are these jobs? Should I move out of the midwest and work on.Net crap?
I feel your pain. I graduated in 2003 with a BS in CS. The bust was probably bottoming out during that time, and it took me 8 months to find a job. My first job was a really crappy one making 27k, where I helped out with IT and redid their website in.Net. But since then I have had several different jobs moving up in salary each time. I'm making a lot more money now, doing what I want (Java) at a great consulting company (Brulant). My advice: take the 1st crappy.Net job you can get, and move up from there. My company is still hiring developers like crazy, btw. Both Java and MS.
The majority of my mp3 collection is ripped at 192Kbps. They sound fine to me, but then again my hearing isn't all that great. But I do have a pair of nice etymotic headphones.
I have one of those cards and have used it to dj with my laptop in the past. It works great to preview what I will play on my laptop output and actually play the music on that one.
The models are available for you to play with. The basic experiments (CO2 laden air traps more heat) are easy to replicate. The satellite data indicating that the atmosphere is warming is available.
That's all well and good, but aren't models and data only as accurate as the assumptions behind them?
I don't know who will fix it, but I know who will pay for it... you and me, among others.
This is not "privitization". They are still using public money to hire contractors.

It makes sense for people like me who use Firefox but not Thunderbird. I'll just stick to webmail.
Curved white and red plastic? Why can't they release a sleek looking metallic or carbon fiber one?
