    As much as I hate responding to flame-bait, I just have to mention that HF is still used for many real-world purposes. Here in Australia, it is used to educate kids in the outback, as well as for public safety communications. There are many more reasons to keep using HF, I can't see it dying any time soon.

    Incidentally, one of the basic principles of civilization is "Keep a lot of violence ready for when the barbarians attack." Any civilization that fails to do so will end soon after. Don't let the current Pax Americana, the product of the West's skill with violence, lead you to believe that barbarians aren't still knocking at the gate.

    Just build the Great Wall of China and they can't enter your territory!

    Just like the settlement it reached with book authors, Google could give $66 to each homeowner photographed by StreetView.

    That would just be silly and expensive. Nothing more.

    Why do car manufacturers charge extra for the "Safety Pack"? It costs them more, so they charge more, exactly the same as in this situation.

    And of course Kurzweil missed 9/11 and the fallout from that. His predictions might have been nearer the mark absent the war on terror.

    His prediction on civil liberties might not have been so true if 9/11 never happened.
