They do. They very much do. Specially days in the year... "We have 365 days in a year.. but we have some hours off... What do we do?? I know! let's put a day more every 4 years! brilliant!" What a load of....
Anyone knows how the second (as a time measurement) was born? Please let me know.
I won't continue with my posts because 1) I could go on and on all day long and 2) I don't want to become TOO offtopic.
But you gotta admit that sounds like a nice way to get income from the gamer, regardless of if it's right/wrong that someone is paying for it. If there is demand, why not supply?.
Amen brother!! Who wants to use a measure that passes to the next "power" by counting 12 of them? (inches-feet). Our numerical system is 10 based. Line up with the system. For once, this is a GOOD system!:P
Could be, but who's in charge of making the laws and rules? You say an international body. But I don't think it would be safe against bribes and lobbying and all those nasty stuff. Taxes?? I don't want to pay to my ISP AND Internet. Decency? That's such a broad concept is not even funny. And I don't want yet ANOTHER police controlling what I can/cannot do online
I like having my online freedom, and I'm responsible enough to handle that freedom. I like being able to hide behind a nickname for protection or use my real name when needed. All of that would disappear if they make it a sovereign nation.
Occasionally, we catch ourselves engaging in activities that would indicate we are world citizens first and citizens of the United States second
Just think about online activities. Most of them aren't country-specific anymore (I'm thinking about things like online gaming, or even here in Slashdot). Everybody is connected, no matter where do you live. I feel the way you're describing. I'm a citizen of the world, and since I've been using Internet (when it became massive here around 1995), being Chilean is just one more tag I carry. Is the place where I was born and raised. But it doesn't mean I only think about my country and I don't care about any other place. I have the impression that many U.S. ppl are just too much into their own bubbles and don't realize there are more countries outside. Like when I met my fiancee's parents (Texan people). They had a very wrong idea of what a chilean woman would be or look like. And they were impressed when they met me:P (points for me lol).
What I'm trying to say is, when everybody starts opening to the rest of the world, political limits will become just that.
The beauty of the metric system... it makes me shed a tear:P
And don't forget celcius! 0 for the temperature the water freezes, 100 for when it boils (as a standard - every geek knows that boiling depends on air pressure). Cannot be more simple. Or even Kelvin. I have a hard time getting used to Fahrenheit (sorry if I mispelled). It doesn't have any sense to me.
In the case of the fruits, is the first time I see them measured as liquid (even if it's a dry measurement). We measure it here by kilograms (or grams).
Adding something to the parent post, I'd say that willpower is the issue when you start an addiction, even chemical ones. At the beginning of it, is easy to leave it because you have none or a very little body dependency, and it's only a matter of will. The problem is when you develop the dependency.
Besides that, I agree 100% with parent. I play a lot of videogames too, sometimes addictively, but I still can push the power button to enjoy other things.
At least here in Chile, parents don't have any background as gamers. My generation is the one who started as it. So, from that perspective, parents here have no reference about how to handle videogames. But in any case it doesn't take to be a very bright parent to see that, if your child is hurting him/herself by doing nothing else but playing videogames alone, you need to do something.
companies tend to advertise more generic, unprovable things like happiness
I don't know what's worse. At least if they sell you something that didn't work, you have the chances to return it and get your money back (sometimes).
And I think I made a mistake on my post. I think the word "imagining" doesn't exist and it should be "imaginating". I'm not a natural english speaker. But I prefer correcting myself before some spelling-grammar-nazi comes:P
I welcome the commercials when my bladder is about to explode:P. And I take the time to disturb my boyfriend-on-the-computer if I'm at his apartment:P (my computer is at my house, so whenever he's using his, I only have the tv option hehehe)
To be fair there are clever ads out there, it's just that they rarely actually make me more likely to buy something
When I see a clever ad on tv (rarely), I actually enjoy watching it. And I don't mind watching it again, even if it's of a product I'd never buy. I miss the times when adds were actually informative about what they were selling, instead of selling "happiness", like almost all ads do now (maybe that time never existed and I'm imagining it). I just don't fall on that crap. I know advertisement should provoke you to buy the product, or at least have it on your mind when you go buy stuff, but some of them are just too offensive to my intellect.
I wouldn't be surprised. By experience I can see that. With my sisters we always fought to have the red neighborhood. Somehow the one who had that one always had cash incoming.
I have to be honest and say that, when I was a kid, I hated that card where you have to pay a certain % of your assets. I didn't understand how to calculate those by then. When I grew up I understood, but I still get that bitter sensation everytime I get that card:P

*slowly raises hand*
I have no problems on lvling a char till max or shoot a player or two. But those ghosts always got me one way or another.
The gamer part of me is saying "that would rock!". The rest is saying "how lame". I won't say what's the % of each one thought :P
But you gotta admit that sounds like a nice way to get income from the gamer, regardless of if it's right/wrong that someone is paying for it. If there is demand, why not supply?.

But it actually made sense to me.... it reminded me of my old UO days :P

Or maybe I'm just too paranoic

1 cc = 1mg = 1mL of H2O
:P

Stop with the spelling issue and talk about THE important issue: Learn metric system! Everybody else uses it. You can do it too! :P

I dare you to rearrange those words to form something coherent :P
I know I tried to read it skipping a word or two to see if it was an encrypted message behind it... no luck hahahha
Hey, even Arkanoid had a story... why not Tetris?
Heh, I think there is a slight difference between informative and stating the obvious ;)
Hahaha! thank you. That teaches me to trust my subconscious more :P

sex != reproduction, since the birth control pill and even counting days.
Chile FTW!! The best wines are made here :D. And don't forget our empanadas hahaha :P
:( The biggest one here in Chile is 2.4Mbps.
But I want that 2,5Gb internet connection... I only have 1.2Mb

Shhhh hun, the "average" slashdotter doesn't know what a girlfriend is ;) And no "playtime" is kinda common.

You probably played with very dumb people... I don't see how that cheat would work otherwise.
