  1. Lightning = Energy on Researchers Unravel Mystery of Lightning Diversity · · Score: 1

Well, they could also spend some resources to try to extract energy from lightning.
Along with wind power plants is also a nice method to extraxct energy from the athooshere, which seems not to be a bad idea.

  7. Not so smart, though. on Cryptographically Hiding TCP Ports · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, if you use cyphers just to shuffle the TCP ports ... plain SSH with public key authentication would work with the same level of security.
In both cases you need to keep a crypto key secret otherwise you'll end with secuity hole. A shuffled one, but still a hole.

  8. RF placebo? on Research Finds Effects of GSM Signals on Sleep · · Score: 1, Insightful

subjects were exposed either to 884 MHz GSM radiation or placebo.
Should this means "exposed to nothing"?
  9. DRM and Limits on Apple and Fox Set to Announce Movie Rental Deal · · Score: 1

movies that will only play for a limited amount of time
Which should mean proprietary file format and player?
A good bait for hackers to circumvent it.
As stated previous postings, DRM is an illusion, renting digital files doubly so.
  10. Not just the Music Industry on MTV: 2007 Borked the Music Industry · · Score: -1, Redundant

  17. They need something else on Group Hopes to Rename Street After Douglas Adams · · Score: 1

We'd need to do this in every civilised city of the Universe.

  18. The answer is: illegal wiretapping! on Skype Encryption Stumps German Police · · Score: 1

When the Police or a Judge needs to wiretap phone conversations, they ask the telecom companies to provide them with a "plug" with unscrambled and unencrypted traffic. Every communication company is to comply with this law, at least in United Europe.
This happens for landline, GSM and sat phone calls. And should also happen for Skype-like calls.
If the Police is trying to do it the hard way, well, I fear they are trying to do something illegal!
Or maybe they are trying to make people sure that Skype is unbreakable, while it is not.
You can bet that somewhere in the Skype system the conversations are clear text. That's the right place you can push your plug to wiretap!

  19. Good also for politics and economy on Honeybees Might Prompt Faster Internet Server Technology · · Score: 1

Honeybees somehow manage to efficiently collect a lot of nectar with limited resources and no central command.
This sounds good also in applications other than internet and datacenters. Like politcs and economy.
Maybe someday we'll get ruled by bees or ants.
  20. Preserving emails is like preserving the wind on White House Ordered to Preserve All Email · · Score: 1

Unless you also preserve the email server logs (and they have to be really detailed in order to make some sense of preservation), preserving all the emails is an illusion. Not to talk about the amount of storage needed, tapes for long term preservation etc etc.
Forget about the emails: it's more or less the same as the work of mounth: blowing in the wind.
