  1. Let Parents Track the Children on Let Goofy Track Your Children · · Score: 1

This piece of hardware and service seems to be very useless especially in cities, where it is supposed to be more useful. That's why (in my opinion).
    1. The system should send messages with position data with increasing frequency when the child is in crowded places. This would lead to a wireless network (like GSM) overload.
    2. Whe wireless network could introduce dangerous message delivery latency.
    3. It won't work in almost all closed places because of either GPS or wireless network bad coverage.
    4. Once you know that your child is somewhere he shouldn't be in, what would you do? Call the Police and wait? Run there?
    5. The system can be removed and placed somewhere else.
    6. Nothing can prevent your child from calling using another phone.
    7. Nothing can prevent your child from being hurted.

So it'd be much better to have parents watching over their own children. In person, I mean!
Is your job, hobby, sport or shopping more important than your child's health and happiness?

Character fonts patenting is a bad idea, imho. Because the fonts themselves alone don't make any sense.
A picture alone can make sense, that is carries some information.
Character fonts make sense when used to write words, sentences or simply character strings. So the fonts themselves don't carry any information. They could, but don't.
A better idea for people working in Redmond would instead be to patent words printed with a certain font as if they were pictures. Normal people calls these things "logos".

Encryption on servers makes sense when they can be physically accesses or seized.
In my opinion, the number of servers physically seized is too low to bother about FS encryption. Infact when in use in a network server, all those files get somehow unencrypted to be sent over the network.
And, AFAIK, almost all the intrusions, data thefts and the likes happen without accessing the actual file blocks on the disks.
So, where are the FS encyption technologies supposed to be expoited?
I see one area: mobile computing and communication. That is laptops, palms, smartphones, portable media like USB keys etc.
Here the encryption is very important for the sake of privacy as all those piece of hardware are very often subject to be stolen or lost. And here the effectiveness and the efficiency of the encryption technology is very important because of the reduced computing resources involved.
    But maybe I'm wrong! :-)

I have always wondered about the claims made by the airplane crew regarding the interferences.
First of all I'd like to know how can a cell phone link to a BSS while flying at 5 Km from ground. Well it's doable but the high speed would then hinder any real communication. I think.
Second, if such a low cost device can give troubles to an airplane, I would try to find a good solution as soon as possible because cell phones could be used by terrorists to do nasty things with airplanes.
And I hope that the solution is not to seize the phones at the boarding gates!

  21. Evolution of theories on Pittsburgh Professors Challenge Darwin · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think that none should trash any theory, unless there are some clear evidences and, much better, when there is one theory able to provide answers when the other ones cannot.
Evolution theory seems to be quite reasonable because it seems to rely on very few postulates when compared to other theories.
If other theories need fewer postulates and provide more answers, then chances there are that they will succeed.
I'd suggest a quick read of "The Fabric of reality" by David Deutsch for deeper details about this philosophy.
In any case theories about evolution are themselves subject to evolution whenever the objective is to provide answers.

When you turn the cell phone off (or it is shutting down because of low battery), it nicely says the network is being shut down. So your evil tracer would know what you did.
It is a much better solution to unplug the battery. The cell phone will suddenly disappear from the network as if you were passing through an uncovered area.
And none could say where you are and why they don't know.
The only cons are about the loss of some cell phone data (like the last calls details and so on). But we can afford such a loss for the sake of privacy, can't we?
