Mind you, that would be the only thing banks provide free these days.

If it is not profitable, they will not produce. This is linked with patents. IIRC, there was a major dispute with the big pharma companies a few years back, ended up with a drug taken off the market. And let's not forget the penicillin disputes (Chain, Merck-Sharp-Dome, Florey, Fleming etc.)

I know what we will do! We open-source the support! Free GPL'ed code, delivered straight to your door, ready and willing to support OOo.

Seriously, does it matter? Some things just won't gain huge, widespread acceptance, displacing a massive, well funded market monopolist. OOo is great (I use it now) but I can't see it getting supported. Christ, I just got off the phone to Tech Support at Bigpond (biggest broadband supplier in Australia), they don't support anything except Outlook Express and Outlook. If a simple email app can't get supported, what hope is there for a 100MB+ Office suite?

  13. Distributions responsibility on Suspend2 Suspended · · Score: 3, Interesting
This is an area where the major distro's - Ubuntu, Mandrake, Suse et al. need to pick up their game. Suspend2 is a great solution, but it is poorly integrated into the vanilla distro's. A few months ago, I tried Suspend2 with Hoary (Ubuntu 5.04) I had to:

    1. Download Ubuntu kernel sources
    2. Apply a patch-set
    3. Recompile the kernel and install the kernel
    4. And some other stuff I forgot - involving messing around in /etc and other areas - config files galore!

Now I havent tried it with Breezy, but I am pretty sure there is no .deb/script on UbuntuForums.

Why can't the disto's simply give the user Suspend2 fully integrated in their repective kernels?

Surely not stability issues, because it was bug-free for me. Even a simple choice would be miles better than what the current situation. The distro makers have dropped the ball, let's see them pick it up.

Oh wait - I just said that Ubuntu et al. is not perfect! Goodbye, karma.

Do you think that the dangerous exploits and cracks that are, for the moment, unknown by Apple, and are hence, very valuable. Ironically, the AMD64 series CPU's have no front side bus. This includes the X2 series. They have a hypertransport bus, which is similar but different. This is one of the premier reasons that the X2/Opterons scale so much better than the Intel equivalents, they do not have a saturated FSB as they have direct HTT links CPU-CPU.

Intel lost this battle. My X2 3800+ performs better, OC's better, and is faster than a similar priced Pentium D. And I got it a good few months ago. So did many others.

Intel needs to accept that they lost this war, and focus on the 07-08 season, when the target market is upgrading again.

The "Alert - But not alarmed" is the Aussie equivalent to the Orange/Red terror alerts in America. The Howard Government has been steadily increasing the fear levels in the population. They recently voted on a bill that would allow incarceration without charge for around 90 days IIRC. AFAIK it wasn't passed after human rights activists won a minor victory for freedom.
