"We hired a guy to go through and audit and get us legal, but he didn't work out," the business owner said. "So we fired him and that's when he went and ratted us out."

What, are we supposed to feel sorry for the business owner aka software pirate? Watch out, here comes the clue bat...don't fire people who you hire to clean up your illegal messes. What is it with incompetent business owners who blame their employees. If you don't have the competence to manage your company's finances without breaking the law, maybe it's NOT the guy you hired who isn't working out.

I've blocked wallpaper and color changes before. This was back in the windows 3.1 days. People would spend hours mucking with their colors and would regularly set them such that the background matched the foreground for some text and it would, of course, not be visible. They'd then want me to come fix it. Or inevitably they would choose a wallpaper which would offend someone. We went to a nice company logo wallpaper and the standard colors for everyone.

It isn't for you. Linux I mean. If you need hand holding then you shouldn't use linux unless HP or Dell makes it available to you. Just because people who use linux don't want to help you doesn't mean they're lazy. Many of us are quite busy dealing with our own lives thank you very much. Claiming that we're lazy because we don't want to take on your personal responsibility is like me claiming that you're lazy because you don't want to come over and do my dishes.

And please don't project this linux user = linux advocate BS on me, I don't care if non-techies ever use linux. The only reason I care that others use it at all is so there is continued development. But there's no need to encourage qualified linux users that the unix way is a better way, they already know.

I got modded flamebait the last time I said something like this, but, if you're really used to windows and aren't annoyed by it then linux will probably annoy you. You should stick with windows XP on your laptop until you know that you would rather have linux. Ubuntu is easy to install, you can do it yourself and Ubunut will even send you a disk to do it with. I would suggest getting a new computer with XP, migrating all of your data to it from your old computer, then installing Ubuntu on your old machine. Now put your ubuntu laptop someplace where you will use it to surf the web or do light work and use it every chance you get, but, don't put anything on it that you NEED, not at first. Do explore free software and install new packages on this machine. This will expose the kinds of issues that irritate people who are used to the windows experience. There are so many factors that can taint your linux experience that having your primary machine running linux, if you have no experience with it, is not a good idea. For example, KDE, Gnome, or something more lightweight? How do you switch between them, why would you want to? If you're just playing around with a machine and you muck it up then reinstalling is no big deal, if it's your main machine, it is. A few months of playing with it and you will know if you prefer the linux way of doing things or not.

Precisely. The advantages of satellite radio are not simply that it's "digital" as the industry clown in the article wants people to think. In fact, I doubt most people who subscribe cite sound quality as the most important advantage. As another poster pointed out, american consumers have shown that they are not willing to pay more just for improved sound quality. In the long run I think broadcasting sans network will lose out. I would look to the cell phone carriers to providing any significant alternative to satellite. You must have good selection of content and the ability to reach consumers where they are.

Linux is free. I don't spend much time maintaining it and I spend close to zero time shopping for applications for it because almost everything I need is in a repository. Hence, I don't feel the need to bitch about people not wanting to handhold beginners.

At the end of the day, I like what it does for me and I like it's tech-centric focus. If you aren't a techie I don't think you should "try" linux. Just forget about it and use windows, it won't be much different for you if you aren't already frustrated with windows and it will probably frustrate you with things like sound, graphics, and streaming media.

It isn't a cool club for you to join, it's just an operating system that works well for software developers, technical people, and basic computer users. If you are the typical windows user who loves your web junk you'll just be frustrated, save yourself the headache and don't bother.

    Here is the observation:

Mediocre profs make rules, good profs do not.

By good, I don't mean easy. Good profs are firm, fair, have a great work ethic, live up to their own standards, know their material, and present it well. They walk into the classroom start lecturing and leave when it's done. They aren't easily distracted or ruffled because a student asks a tough question or puts them on the spot. They don't care if people are paying attention or not, they teach to those who are and respect that those who are not have a good reason for doing so. Good reason is defined by the student.

The sooner students learn this the better. Just drop the power freaks and take someone who doesn't need to compensate for his/her inadequacies.

    That is all.
