Require all users to run as a limited user as per Principle of Least Privilege. This is the key. I once had a computer lab for inner city youth with no AV software at all, just limited user accounts and a simple router. Once we could afford Symantec AV Corporate (I work for a non profit) and ran the scans, no viruses. If anyplace was bound to get one, that would have been it.

I am so used to having to do everything the hard way and so is the way I learned Unix/Linux. Try editing fstab/exports in efforts to set up a first ever linux network without a gui, without knowing about vi or less, and not even knowing commands enough to type anything after man. It worked though. Sometimes I amaze myself with what I can do with a command line and perl. My self forced discipline to stay away from a gui in the beginning was key for truly learning Linux/Unix. My first ever Linux gui was twm with a custom .twmrc file edited with none other than the vi skills I was forced to learn. I've since upgraded to XFCE for my desktop, but the notion of a server with a gui just seems like a silly waste of resources to me now.

I built one the other day. From gateway to .local 2K3 network sits my Linux box running sshd which is the only box exposed to the internet via router forwarding. So, I grab a laptop from the inventory, wipe Windows completely off, and install Debian on my soon to be appliance. Then, write a little script and make a double clicky thing that calls ssh -L$Fport:$forwardaddress:$FRport $destinationaddress@$user, and then system call redesktop. From there, I get a small pizza box, cut holes for the screen, usb ports, etc., paint it a sexy silver color, write SWD (Secure Work Delivery) Systems on the side, and of course hide and deny the fact I use all GPL'd code. This solution works perfectly for selective remote desktop capabilities for the small to mid size company all without the worry of an end user managed Windows laptop tunneling into the network. I am all about custom network appliances that beleive less is more.

AT least when I was using w2k. Of course there was a lot of trial and error to determine what was needed and what was not. Many times those services were the equivalent of the startup folder. I did notice performance boosts at times, but these boosts were offset by the occasional quirks that would require 10 minutes or more to track down the needed service. Ultimately I realized the lack of documentation or at best the sparse KB articles combined with the intermittent problems negated any semi-worthwhile gains. Except for that damned messenger service, which I realized was necessary to disable long before Microsoft ever got around to it.

Eventually I discovered Linux, ps -aux, and all the documentation I could ever want and was happy.

But this sure is good news for those of us who do not compete for Apple specific jobs because we cannot claim good faith expertise or even power-user familiarity with Apple products.
