Where I work, we have system's engineers that have the job of keeping the big picture in their head, and making sure the designers of individual components are working in harmony with this big picture.
Everything we do is very compartmentalized, and there are specific people on each project that make sure everyone is on the same page, that components will indeed work with each other, etc...

something he most emphatically wasn't in Neuromancer
You do understand that Neuromancer was written in 1984, right?
(My fiance gave it to me for my birthday, but decided to read it before he gave it to me, and I had a Tom Holt to finish.)
Glad you could clear that up. I was very confused as to why, having received this book on your birthday, you hadn't finished yet.
"Why so many digits? Why are we running out of phone numbers?"
It's partly because of partitioning. If phone numbers were just a flat space--no area codes, no exchange codes, just a number, we'd probably still be fine with phone numbers to match the exact amount of devices using them. Same thing with IP space.
I'm gonna get nailed with an offtopic, but seeing your sig, I have to ask what you thought of Gangs? I thought it was a huge let down. Daniel Day-Lewis was really good through most of the movie, but it wasn't enough to save it from the fact that there wasn't any story.
Ah, but what if instead of going out with a bang, it goes out with a never-resolved cliffhanger??? That's what Farscape fans despair of
I was pretty pissed off about this season's hiatus, what crappy way to do things. And then when I heard the show was cancelled, that bugged me too, but it's been so long since I've seen an episode that I don't really care any more.
I actually thought I missed the first of these last 11 episodes last friday, and I was only mildly put off. btw, the sci fi website still says it'll be on at 10pm eastern, instead of the actual 8pm. go figure.
yeah, they mentioned that windows didn't notice that the drive was unplugged, and was still visible [in explorer I assume].
So if they had clicked on that drive letter, they would have blue screened. You know you can do this with regular ATA too, or at least I've done it. As long as windows doesn't want to access the drive while it isn't there, it works ok.
I don't know what would happen in linux if you had the drive mounted, and it was absent during an attempted access.
"there is a finite limit to how much mass a body can accumulate before collapsing in on itself."
What the hell does that have to do with economics? Economics is all fiction, an abstract idea. How exactly do you put limits on an abstraction? Economics is not a zero-sum game.
I like stacks too. I don't like bookmarks... I rarely use them. But I'd like push and pop buttons, that store info that is maybe just valid until I close the browser. I'd probably never push more than one page at a time, but it's easy enough to have that functionality.
It would've been nice right now, for example, to have pushed the current page before hitting the reply button. As it is now I'd have to jump back twice to get where I was.
Actually that's not true, I use mozilla's tabbed browsing for the same effect. But I'd still like push and pop buttons. And before anyone says that it is too complex for your everyday joe, I respond with "well even the simplest calculators have the 1 deep stack", to which someone would probably reply that most people don't know how to use it.
"Which is basically what I meant, if not exactly what I said."
I wasn't so much correcting what you said as I was clarifying for others.
[I'm not talking about you, kfg, in this part] So many people hear something they think is smart, but don't understand, and repeat it as if it were a clever thought they just had. It's happened so much with the "the first step is admitting there's a problem" that it is cliched (sp?).
I guess I just read your comment and felt like adding my thoughts on the topic. Here's another tid bit... I've discovered in myself that the more I talk about doing something, the less likely I am to actually follow through and do it. I know a lot of alchy's that talk about quiting, and none of them have. I never talked about quiting, not seriously anyway. I just decided I had to one day (after a binge). Having decided, I didn't feel any need to tell anyone.
I could write a lot about that, but if I put a summary of it here I'll never expound upon it later.
"Take a page from the "Big Book." The first step to overcoming the problem is admiting there's a problem"
As an alcoholic, recovering of course, I can say that the first step is not in admitting there is a problem. It's believing there is a problem.
I had no trouble admitting I was an alcoholic, and pouring myself a beer at the same time. It wasn't until I believed through and through that it was a problem for me, and a serious one at that, that I was able to stop. Most alcoholics have to hit rock bottom for that to happen. And usually more than once. I was lucky enough to perceive the bottom before I actually impacted and was able to divert myself.
I suspect that most of these addicted gamers are just persuing an avenue of escapism. I had a bit of a rough time in college, and I used to read a lot of books to forget about the world around me... my situation has changed and I'm a much happier participant of life now. A direct result of which is that I don't read as many, or the same kind of books.
Unfortunately I don't have any sage advice regarding these matters. All I can say is endurance and perceverance are the traits that get you through tough times.

"...it's eating more and more of my valuable screen estate..."
I thought the same thing. I run at 1600x1200 at home, and once upon a time that seemed like a lot. But at work my monitors are a few years newer, and I'm able to drive them at something like 2048x1536. I quickly got used to the higher rez, and really began to appreciate mozilla's font scaling(sp?).
And mozilla's font scaling makes me think that for a lot of windows, instead of minimizing, I'd like to be able to zoom out or otherwise shrink them. Enough so I could still recognize and maybe even make out some text, but not take up a lot of screen space if I wasn't using that window heavily.
Anyone know if there is already something like that?

Partitioning makes it easier to decode.
