I actually use both. I have a desktop for doing heavy lifting and storage. It has a huge monitor, gobs of HD, and pretty much everything else. I use the laptop is an accessory, not a replacement. So I only use sub 3lbs units. Great for browsing internet and email in bed or on the go. I'm on it more than my desktop. I'm probably in the minority in this style of use, basically using laptop as a big pda. I can see more ppl computing this way in the future though.
but for what most ppl do, recent laptops are more than enough. laptops will always be behind desktops, but in the past few years the gap has shrunk and computers have gotten fast enough that a even "slow" machine will do 90% of what most ppl need. it's like saying "the mac mini (basically a laptop) is too slow for me". while this is true, it's not too slow for most ppl. the biggest benefit for a lot of ppl is that the laptop is small enough that they can just use it on a table or couch and not have a dedicated computer area (i know, foreign concept on/.) not everyone needs a home office. of course there is also the portability. marketshare can never be summed up with "not me". all it means is you (and geeks) are in the minority, which is exactly what the finding state.
more importantly, they get to sell more new ones.
1. make mp3 player
2. market heavily so most ppl don't know other exist
3. drop quality so they break down faster
4. offer to buy back and sell new one
5. profit!
6. repeat
A)I doubt this creates a huge wall between the haves and the have-nots. As long as the amount is low enough, this shouldn't be a problem. It's not a huge premium for something that is optional. B) I'm not sure how many people will worry about the interest. $5 over a couple weeks? Given the number of people who have checking accounts that don't bear interest, I would say it's a non-issue.
blasphemy. holy apple will not only give you a free battery, but a flower as well. steve will personally see to it. and all will continue to smell like roses. apple is not out to make money, just to make the world better through enlightment.
i thought SCMS (serial copy management system?) was forced by the recording industry. the battle in courts pretty much killed DAT, MD, and the DCC (digital compact cassete). i maybe wrong, but i thought sony was fighting not to bother with content protection. the recording industry wasn't about to let anyone make digital copies without some kind of barrier (home recordings didn't get a copy protect bit, only pre-recorded stuff). ATRAC sucks now, but at the time was pretty nice. The MD took advantage a lot of neat technologies (psycho-acoustic compression, kerr-effect, curie point). a little refresher:

I love using windows. i have the double paned ones that fold in for easy cleaning. i love to look through them to check the weather, see who's knocking, and bird watching. Windows provide me tons of information and couldn't be easier to use. They are great for security and I never worry about getting bugs inside. They illuminate my otherwise dreary life. I even love using windows in the car. I will never buy a car without windows. Using windows is such a pleasure, more than I can say for my computer running XP.
are you refering to inspirons? cuz i find their latitude line to be pretty solid.
