Everything has to be compared violently to Apple, eh? Kill the iMac and kill the iPod!:)
What might be a killer product but not an iPod killer is the Jukebox Multimedia - Portable Entertainment Center. Archos makes some interesting products. I have an Archos Jukebox 6000 but now use an iPod -- its nice but the size and firewire device of the iPod make it my choice. The Jukebox Multimedia - Portable Entertainment Center is a handheld entertainment center, which combines an MP3 and WMA music player and recorder, plus built-in microphone, photo album and carousel, still camera and camcorder, plus video player and recorder according to their web site. The player has a 10 Gig hard drive. It uses USB 1.0, USB 2.0 and Firewire for transfering information back and forth. It even has a little LCD window to view pictures and movies on the device. Looks like it is the same size as the Riot. Could be a nice data wallet/purse.
Seems to have everything the average computer user would need, minus a nice 3D graphics card.Perhaps the standard large ATX-size computer cases will cease to exist and be replaced by these "mini-computers." I find these gems cuter than any iMac I've ever seen!"
The "SpaceWalker" is no way as cute as the Apple iMac. Plus the iMac comes with a NVidia GeForce 2 MX 3D card and 15" LCD monitor. The iMac has DVD-R/CD-R burning compared to the CD-RW of the SpaceWalker. Also, the iMac only has a 10.6" foot print. From what I understand, that is smaller than the FlexATX board.
The SpaceWalker is more a diamond in the ruff compared to the polished Apple iMac.
The Linux Watch website was slashdotted in 13% of the time that it took Linux Hardware. Guess that is what you get when you use cheap hardware. Next time, spend the money and get something worth using. Value not only refers to cost of the machine but the quality within.
Thank You Philips! Finally a company with the power of IP using it to the consumer's benefit. I would love to see Philips sue record companies for deceptively using their certification logo!
squid might be overkill, i use junkbuster myself to discard ads
You are right about overkill for ads but I also use Squid for general caching but then again, I love solving problems with sledgehammers. Junkbuster is a good product for this purpose.
Cool. We see the goal but have different methods to get there.
Sorry about the conservative slag, but I do tend to learn towards socialism and a kind of forced 'taking it for the team' approach to community. That is, I don't mind being a martyr if everyone will join me.;)
No problem. Too many people think that personal responsibility is a conservative value. I believe you cannot have liberty without personal responsibility and self determination. No offense but I see socialism as the absence of personal responsibility as the group as a whole will take care you when you make poor choices and you are only as strong as your weakest link.
I do have to disagree with the banner-responsible-for-bust thing.
I think if you go back and read what I typed that it was 'one of the main' not 'the main' cause of the dot bomb. But the reliance on banner ads instead of charging for content from the beginning has convinced the web viewing public that all content should be free -- outside of pr0n which had the right business plan from the start. Make the suckers pay upfront.
1. Ad banners are one of the main causes of the dot bomb.
Um. Okay. I'll give you that because I'm too lazy to ask why.
People thought ad banners would generate tons of revenue instead of pursuing other revenue streams. Now the internet populace expects free content and ignores ad banners (either with my method or visually ignore them).
3. Most 3rd party banner services are privacy killers.
So turn cookies off, or block cookies from those domains. No argument here.
They always track IPs across domains along with cookies like 'web bugs'.
4. If I like content, I always hit the tip jar if its available.
What if you sorta like it? Or you don't like it, but you keep coming back? And how do you know how much bandwidth/etc cost you are incurring on the content provider, and thus, whether you are providing a meaningful or suitable payment?
I am not a fool, I only pay for what I like and avoid what I do not like. I am not a masochist.
9.I don't believe in your imaginary friend so I am unlikely to put money in its plate.
Tis a poor debater, he who infers personal details of others based on their examples.
I was teasing as he assumed I believe omnipotent imaginary friends. Which I do not. The last two comments were meant to round it off to 10. Not #7.
Ah, a conservative. Funny how you all complain when it's a close friend or family member that ends up being that ignorant person. I guess the only thing I can hope for is that someone close to you suffers a little from your own actions. It is, unfortunately, ironies like that that seem to be the sole cure for conservatism, or, as I like to call it, the "I'd never be that dumb!" syndrome.
I am not a conservative. Most conservatives are bible thumpers, as I do not believe in a omnipotent imaginary friend, it would be hard to label me as such. Libertarian would be closer but most are pothead screwballs so I don't associate with them. I don't see how I am responsible for the failings of dumb/lazy/ignorant people or for their care and feeding. If I choose too, that is my choice but it should never be required.
Good point about TiVo. You exactly right about the publisher/broadcaster getting paid ahead of time. However, the advertiser is not getting what they paid for if you skip ahead with TiVo.
This still doesn't make banner ads, web bugs and tracking cookies ok to invade my browser as I shouldn't be forced to support bad revenue models and privacy invasion. Thats why I love the PayPal tip jars (never done the Amazon ones). I like to show my support with cold hard cash, not viewing annoying animated gifs
Advertising isn't great, sure, but thats a pretty selfish way to do things; like going to church but never dropping some change in the plate. Other people are forced to deal with more intrusive advertising thanks to ad-blocking. Are you just betting on enough dumb/lazy/ignorant people to view ads to keep your experience ad-free?
Ad banners are one of the main causes of the dot bomb.
Its my net connection and computer, I will determine what travels into my system.
Most 3rd party banner services are privacy killers.
If I like content, I always hit the tip jar if its available.
Is skipping ads with a TiVo any different?
Smart web masters will set up their ads to defeat my filters. Most of the time its trivial to defeat ads. "/ads/", hello?
90% of what I filter is "ads.doubleclick.net" and "servedby.advertising.com"
Ads are ugly and the flashing animation could almost set off epileptic seizures.
I don't believe in your imaginary friend so I am unlikely to put money in its plate.
Frankly, I don't care about dumb/lazy/ignorant people. Its their lot in life to suffer.
What makes you so special that you can step to the head of the line, so long as critical mass doesn't follow your lead?
Because I can. Its my freedom of choice...I choose to live as AD free as possible.
Don't gripe! No one has to view ad banners! With Squid Cache and Squid Guard running on your Linux/BSD/Mac OS X (where I use it) box, you never have to view ad banners again. In this case, all you have to add to your "Domain" list in Squid Guard (if you have it set up to block) is "us.a1.yimg.com" (without the quotes) and you will never know that Yahoo has banner ads. I replace all the banner ads with a 1x1 transparent gif.
Using this system also greatly speeds up my web access as I am no longer pulling tons of ads everyday.
The American fore fathers had a solution to this problem nestled in the US Constitution's Bill of Rights. Its called the Second Amendment and it gives every American the right to defend itself from domestic and foreign oppression. Thomas Jefferson, for one, believed that revolutions are necessary when Governments and their backers become oppressive.
If you think those in power are going to cater to your desires without force or bribery, you are sorely mistaken.
If we are forced to live with Face Recognition Systems, we should require the person operating the camera system to have their photo and their personal information presented next to the camera. They shouldn't have anything to hide, should they? They have my data, why shouldn't I have theirs...
likewise, you cannot say certain things to instigate others into a fight of sorts...doing so also brings about more harm and is considered "fighting words", or something like that...we have a right to be outrageously offense, to a point. remember that.
Define fighting words. The problem with this is all a person has to do is claim someone else's speech was fighting words to limit their ability to critize them. I can be outrageously offense beyond any point you find within reason. There is no point at which as a citizen I should be required to stop legally because your feelings get hurt.
"Fire in a Theater", we all understand except when there is actually a fire.
Its every American's right to be outrageously offensive through expression. Be it sex, violence or politics, its every American's right to make other people incredibly uncomfortable by their speech and expression. The more disgusting and disturbing, the more freedom it should enjoy. These violent video games are nothing more than an expression of ideas set forth by a person or group.
Hopefully, the courts will also start striking down "Hate Speech" codes at public institutions next. Once Government and our public institutions start governing what can and cannot be said, it limits the ability for the disenfranchised to respond. No one has the right not to be offended.
The US is pretty disliked everywhere I've been in Europe.
Glad those thousands of American soldiers in World War II didn't die in vain. If Europe has a problem, maybe they can reimburse the USA in those brand spanking new Euros for the money given to Post War Europe for reconstruction through the Marshall Plan. I would hate for high minded and principled European people to feel hypocritical about taking our money and support in one hand and dismissing us with the other. Maybe next time Europe makes a big boo-boo they can call someone else to solve their problems. I hear China might be interested.
Wake up! People have reasons for their actions. They may not be particularly intelligent, or sane, but they *are* reasons, and actions of that magnitude are born of many, many deep-seated reasons.
So in the case of WWII, you would have supported Chamberlain's coddling of Hitler? That did the British very little good. As with the terrorist, anti-semitic nature of NAZI-ism, I refuse to understand the logic of a perverse culture, religious belief or country. There is no need. The only recourse I see is to subdue that evil and rip it from the population that it rules over before it does the same to yours. You cannot achieve peace with an enemy that thrives in a blind fury of hate.
I admire your patriotism, but don't let it blind you to the way of the rest of the world. The "with us or against us" bullshit is juvenile at best and potentially deadly at worst.
Patriotism? How about common sense. I know those that wish us harm want us bickering among ourselves. They have a single focus and shown their resolve. We must reciprocate. What is truly deadly is the distraction of finding out who is behind us in this fight and will help in the goal of eliminating international terrorism.
Just look at what happens when our friends are supposed to be working on our side. The Inspector Clouseaustyle French airport security nearly led an American jumbo jet to an explosive end. Letting the Poster Boy for Terrorism on board a jet with explosives sneaks kind of makes me wonder if the French Government is taking this "War on Terrorism" seriously.
I don't think I've ever seen such a complete case of total media brainwashing...Wait, which Judeo/Christian values are we acting according to that they have a problem with?
They have a problem with Judeo/Christian values period. We are the infidels. Ever notice those people in the Arab Streets burning Israeli and American flags and effigies of our leaders? Those guys. They have a problem with our very existence. We say that we are not at war with Islam but a large part of the Islamic world is at war with our way of life. Some through the practice of their religion peacefully and others through its perversion. According to Hamas, they can keep on sending suicide bombers for the next 20 years at Israeli and now, American targets. Those that hate us are determined. Make no mistake, those that are perversely practicing Islam couldn't give a porcine poop if you "understand their plight". If you are not a strict adherer of their hallucination of Islam, you are the fore mentioned barnyard bowl movement.
Get the picture yet? Its not your reactionary, tin foil haberdashery claim of media brainwashing but eyes to see what is right before me.
Like I said, if you don't like America or its policy, please feel free to never utilize any of our GDP, products, technology or services. Call me anything you want but until you separate yourself from the US you are nothing more than a hypocrite.
Just as it is inconcievable to defend the September 11 attacks or blame US and say "they deserved it", it is an ultimately self-defeating attitude to reject any understanding of the motives underlying those attacks. And the more you try to force people into making a choice they don't believe they have to make, the more you guarantee your own failure.
I am sorry that it is hard for you to understand. You either agree that America deserved to have 3,000+ of its citizens and guests from 80 different countries killed by spoiled, rich, Islamic perverting brats or America's right to defend its right to existence by extreme, calculated violence. This is not Mr. Roger's Neighborhood or the Tellytubbies. This is reality where you meet force with overwhelming force. The same way America and Britain dealt with the Nazis.
From your comments, I assume you support the spoiled, rich, Islamic perverting brats. I am not forcing others to adopt my view of the atrocity of 9/11. Foreign countries do have an option. Its called death. It will be administered by the US Military Complex and supported by my tax dollars and my anger from having a flying bomb sent over my street in NYC and rammed into what was the World Trade Center. This is not a kids game. This is serious. I live 1/2 mile from the mass grave of my fellow New Yorkers. I am sorry you feel that they deserved what they got through your moral relativism.
I hope you learn the correct lessons. Being the toughest kid on the block shouldn't mean it's ok to thoughtlessly offend anyone you care to. Americans do this far more than they understand. It's time to re-learn the age old skill of diplomacy, understanding, and consideration of others.
Learn the correct lessons? The USA has learned who and who are not our friends. Hopefully, as US citizens, we will recognize that our tax dollars should not be sent as foreign aid to countries where the population feels that we got what we deserved. If you don't like our policies, feel free not to benefit from the fruits of our labor and the products of our industries. I would hate for you to compromise your stance by doing so.
Its very simple, if you are not with us, you are against us in this war against terrorism. There is no middle ground. No sort of mental gymnastics will justify the attack. You cannot understand the motives of those that attacked the US and still be our ally. This was terrorism on a civilian population not a justified military target. These were not poor, disenfranished individuals that attacked America but middle class, spoiled, evil, Islam perverting brats. The only ideology in their plan was their pure hatred for America and Israel and the Judeo/Christian values we hold dear.
international policy of the USA is widely hated (or at least considered highly arrogant) around the world
As a US Taxpayer, I would be more than happy for all these countries that take my tax dollars in the guise of foriegn aide to please return it ASAP. The last thing in the world I want is people that disagree with my country's foreign policy to reap the benefits of the sweat of my brow.
Everything has to be compared violently to Apple, eh? Kill the iMac and kill the iPod! :)

Remember tin foil is for cooking and TV antennas, not haberdashery

That was a sarcastic comment.
I swear Douglas Adams had an answer for everything! I am still sad about his death...
