I wish these scientists would figure this stuff out about human beings instead of mice. I guess Douglas Adams was right in the HHGTTG, the mice are running the show here on Earth. That's why they get the most scientific interest -- of course all of this scientific investigation is the way mice get to observe us.
Just what I need! Technology integrated into my clothing so some 5th Avenue Marketing Bastard can target me for more ads "tailored to my lifestyle". Because we all know that consumers really want more advertising targeted to just them. At least that is what those e-mail marketing SPAMs I get tell me.
What we are talking about is the ability for an advertiser to monitor every waking moment of your life. Big Brother is not Uncle Sam but Big Business. I can just imagine "smart clothing" being like browser cookies. Sure in the beginning it wasn't supposed to be used to track your surfing habits -- its for the user's benefit! But, gee, it works so well, why not use it for tracking consumers? I can just see the day when I walk by Starbucks and my pants will analyse the last time I urinated and determines what size of latte would be perfect for me.
With a future like this, I think I might hit the gym and go nude the rest of my life...
I find it fascinating that people like the Bush family can't figure out why America is globally hated.
I find it fascinating that people such as yourself can only see evil in the United States and our elected leaders.
America hated all around the world? Or is it just you? What I usually find is that the anti-America world is jealous of America. It's easy to hate when you have envy in your soul. Just think about it. America is just a little over 200 years old and it has eclipsed every country and culture since the dawn of man. Germans, Japanese, Italians, English and French have been on terra firma much longer than us "Arrogant Americans" but are any of them the world's one and only "Super Power"? Of course not, if they were, they would have never needed America to bail them out at different points in recent history.
Don't worry, the Bush family understands that America is hated by evil, envious factions, that is why the current President Bush is pounding the stuffing out of one terrorist regime and preparing a giant can of whoop ass for Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Somalia and possibly the PLO. That hatred is bred from resentment of our success and will be eliminated by the products of our success.
"Boo-hoo....I don't understand why these people are so mad at us...I don't understand why they would blow up our landmarks..."
I really hope you are not an American and just one of the envious little foreign twits mentioned above. If you are an American, I would like you to walk around my neighborhood in lower Manhattan spouting that line. I think seeing the faces of my fellow grieving neighbors would do your childish heart some good as you look at the giant hole in our skyline. Blaming America for the 9/11 atrocity is the equivalent of saying a woman deserved to raped because of what she wore.
Do you think that 3,000+ Americans and people from 80 different countries deserved to die at the hands of 19 rich, spoiled, Islamic brats lead by a multimillionaire turban wearing whack job? That these well off, well educated middle class men really attacked America because we persecuted them by allowing them to drink alcohol, visit strip clubs and fly first class in our country even though some were here on expired visas. It wasn't a landmark that was attacked, JERK, it was people.
But count your lucky stars that Slashdot is in America so small minded, hateful, little twits, such as yourself, can spout off any sort of anti-American nonsense you want with the only retaliation against you being called a small minded, hateful, little twit.
The main problem I saw with the ".com's" I worked with was that they bought the most expensive servers (i.e., Sun, DEC & microsoft) they could get their hands on from the get go. They just figured they would have 1,000,000+ visitors a day and equiped for it. I am sure it impressed the VC suits as well to see their invested cash going for "quality" hardware and Operating Systems.
In reality, these ".com's" should have taken off the shelf hardware from CompUSA, fdisked the harddrive, popped in a floppy and FTP installed Linux or BSD. Once they realized that the load was more than the servers could handle then they could have thrown money at the big iron or betting yet, just add on more Linux/BSD servers and scaled up.
Its no wonder that Sun is on the skids right now. You can get barely used, high end Sun servers for pennies on the dollar in the 2nd hand market. I just saw Sun E250s being sold for $1750 today that were $15,000 a year and half ago. Not a bad deal for the user, a major disaster for Sun.
Have I got a deal for you!!! You see, I have a bridge surplus in my inventory right now and I have this gem of a bridge that I hate to part with but I must. Its located in New York City and connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. It will pay off even faster than your Napster investment. Only serious inquiries need apply!
I thought Napster was dead. Guess this is the death rattle for the investors sake. Sad, sad, sad. No one can seem to find out a profitable scheme of ripping off the evil Record Labels.
Since Christmas is one of the most popular times to buy a computer for the family, I am sure this will give new Compaq, Dell, Gateway, and HP buyers some pause find before Santa arrives. Is the gift you give your family going to end up being a hacker's plaything instead of theirs? Too bad you can't walk into a Best Buy or Circuit City and buy a Linux option -- though you can get a Mac powered by Mac OS X which has a few security issues.
I used to run only sendmail for my SMTP needs but I found it a pain to administer when it came to SPAM. In the last year, I have moved all the e-mail servers I manage over to Postfix. Since I have done the switch, I am killing SPAM very effectively -- some still slip through but not many.
By checking my logs for the last 24 hours, I have killed over 800 SPAMs for my 100+ users. If this is a 'typical day' in the life of my e-mail server (though I am seeing more around Christmas than ever), I am killing ~3,000 SPAMs per year per user. Not only does blocking SPAM give me a deep sense of personal satisfaction it gives me more time during my work day to do more important duties (like reading Slashdot) because I don't have users calling me to complain about the sex ads, mortgage offers and fly by night investment opportunities in their e-mail box.
I would love to see the US Congress require all e-mail marketeers to be opt-in instead of opt-out (with the Death Penalty for violators). However, I don't know if this would be effective as most of the SPAM coming in is from foreign servers (mainly Asian nations).

Who would have remembered that Linux kernel 2.4.0 went out only a year ago (Jan. 4, 2001)
Could have fooled me. Unless this article fell through a rip in a temporal vortex caused by excessive FFX playing, Linux kernel 2.4.0 was released less than a year ago. Do the math...
All I want for Christmas is a Slashdot editor that can handle posting an accurate, error free article synopsis and the end of duplicate articles! Aren't you guys supposed to be educated? Maybe for Christmas Slashdotters could pony up some cash to send you guys for a crash course at J-School.
Hence the need to learn English to Metric conversions. So I am completely missing your point. NASA is solely responsible for the final project. Bad management led to the failure of the Mars craft. $125 million could have feed a ton of children.
There is nothing wrong with a good audit over NASA's budget. That budget is what a Butt Head Astronomer would describe as billions and billions and billions and billions of dollars. The Mars Climate Orbiter was just one obvious sign of NASA waste. Getting someone in the accounting field might just be able to help NASA maximize the funds it has and achieving more with the same.
Since the head of NASA is not going to greet the great beyond, he really need not be a scientist. Just someone who is effective running a massive organization funded by taxpayer dollars. As Dennis Tito has shown, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to make it into space. In fact, being good with money and budgets was what lead him to the stars.
Who came up with the idea of cheat codes (Easter eggs) in Video Games? I have always wondered why a company/programmer would leave the inserted cheat codes in their game when its released. I can understand for testing purposes that they are helpful but why for the consumer? And if they leave them in, why don't they just tell you what they are? Obviously they are not making any money selling the cheat codes to Game Shark.
All they need to do is move the steering wheel from the left side of the car to the right side of the car and mirror all the scenes so players are driving on the correct side of the road in Australia. This is completely understandable. The last thing the nation of Australia needs is a bunch of teens taught to drive on the wrong side of the road.
On a serious note, I lived in Australia (Newtown, NSW) in 1992 for about 7 months. When watching TV, I started to notice you really didn't see violence but man 'o man did you see breasts! While I was there, the movie "Ten" w/ Bo Derek was shown on their equivilent of NBC. In America, they cut out all the nudity scenes. In Australia, they actually had more than the original movie had! Special Director's Cut for Australia. What a great country! Great beer, beautiful women and those cool, lickable toads.
"Since one machine in China is a major spammer, all Chinese are clueless"
btamail.net.cn is not the only Chinese domain that I receive SPAM from in China. Just the major offender. 90% of all the spam I get originates from China. I have also run open relay checks on IP blocks in China and found most to harbor open relays. So I am not talking about 1 machine.
The problem with Chinese ISPs is not the inability to speak English but the inability to give a damn about the harm they are causing to users in other countries.
All my spam now seems to be coming from China according to SPAMCOP. What is the deal with this? Are the Chinese so clueless that the entire country runs as an open relay? Since I don't access any resources in China, feel free to pull the plug on them.
After reading the article (whoa did I just do that?), I find you are told in the beginning we are being given "the promise of pollution-free transportation" but at the end we find out it actually produces pollution from the natural gas process for the hydrogen component. Science will have to catch up with the idea to make it truely pollution free.
Also there is a problem with that left over borax that has to be recycled and delivered back to the consumer. Once its used, its spoiled. You can't wash your clothes with it. It has to go through a process to recycle the chemical. How much pollution will that process create? Same problem with electric cars. If they are getting electricity generated from a dirty power plant are they really helping the environment? A truely Green car will have to have a power source that is clean from beginning to end not just from the tailpipe on.
I think I will stick with my buck a gallon gasoline for the time being and use Mass Transit when I can. The ironic thing about the war in Afghanistan were the initial liberal handwringers screaming that Bush II was just trying to jack up oil prices to help out his evil, rich Texas buddies. As we see today, its dirt cheap -- bottled water costs more per gallon!!!
I would rather that 3Com bring back the Kerbango I wanted for months and months (I pre-ordered it from Amazon as soon as it was announced) and it was canned before it was released -- a victim of 3Com's Internet Appliance division. With CDs, car MP3 players (such as a 1,000 song iPod) and 5 AM talk radio stations, who needs Satellite Radio? I would have loved to have the 1,000s of channels of Internet radio from a Kerbango sitting on my desk instead.

Which portable MP3 player has the smallest form factor? How about smallest form factor with the most memory (say, 64 or 128 MB)?
The Apple iPod is:
Height: 4.02 inches (102 mm)
Width: 2.43 inches (61.8 mm)
Depth: 0.78 inches (19.9 mm)
Weight: 6.5 ounces (185 g)
Has 5 gigs of storage (4.66 formated). Thats alot of memory plus it has 20 minute skip protection. The case is also pretty strong, I just dropped mine on to a NYC street from 3 feet with only minor cosmetic damage and major heart skippping.
When I grew up, every Christmas I would sit on Santa's lap and ask for a Daisy pump action pellet gun, Swiss Army Knife, Bow & Arrow set, Metal Skateboard and GI Joe with Jeep and Rocket Launcher. None of this wimpy action figures from Japanese Anime or Video Games. GBA? Heck the only video game we had was Pong and you had to sneak into a bar to play it.
This is just prime example of how liberal, touchy feely, public interest groups are ruining America. I am just waiting for them to suggest frilly pink panties as a perfect gift for little boys. No wonder Middle Eastern terrorists thought we were soft and an easy target. The front cover of the New York Post today showed how Palestinian children play -- with fake bombs strapped around their chests while practicing military assaults.
For God's sake, lets let boys be boys for Christmas. Don't make Santa deliver wimpy toys. Jesus was not born and died on a cross for that.
