  1. At least the Rat had a good life on UK Celebs Charged For Eating Rat · · Score: 1

What gets me is where is the RSPCA when there are million upon million of instances of animal cruelty going on right now every minute of the day. I'm talking about the practice of large-scale industrial style "farming". Have you seen the movie Food inc? The condition of the chickens in so-called chicken houses is so horrendous they wouldn't even show it to you on camera. One brave soul agreed (and lost her contract with Perdue). The chickens are packed with no room to move and live and die in their own waste. They are bred to have huge breasts and are so top heavy they can't walk properly and topple over. They die by the dozen and their corpses are picked up like so much detritus every day. I have nothing against eating meat, by any means. But I do believe we should not treat animals under our care like they are inanimate lumps of flesh incapable of feeling pain or terror. At least the rat had a good life before he ended in the pot. That can't be said for the animals that make it to our plate.

Isn't that the same people who get into a uproar because Obama used a common expression (new to me!) it's like putting lipstick on a pig. Somehow that was considered sexist and an attack on Palin. Well personally if I was Palin and someone heard the word "pig" spoken and immediately thought it referred to me, I'd be very very insulted.

I'm on Ontario. This kind of behavior must be prevalent because it looks like stringent guidelines were implemented. The first week I moved into my house, I received the visit from the natural gas company, or at least that's what I thought they were. They made no real effort to be clear about that. They wanted me on some plan of some sort that pre-bought gas at some fixed price and presumably protected me from some future increase in price. Well like a dummy I signed their thing. But after reading their contact, it was clearly stated that by law, I had 30 days (or something similar) to think it over. But more than that, I had to actually AGREE verbally (over the phone) or with a signature to the contract before it could take effect. If I did not consent on record the contract was null and void. So when I discovered I had been mislead, I refused to consent....and they kept calling and calling. I'm still not sure whether this was a good deal or not, but such marketing tactics should be be encouraged. I'm glad however that laws were in place that protected me from the scumbags.

You are rather creative in the way you interpret the parent's statement. Or maybe way too literal. No one in their right mind would claim that having your family executed and financial ruins are equivalent. He meant, not doubt, identical in their effectiveness. If you are an average North American with a wife, kids, house, car, debts, the threat of financial ruin would be a very very effective goad. If you have to choose between financial ruin and the life of your family, all of a sudden being ruined sounds likes pretty inconsequential. It's called perspective. However I doubt that any person, faced with their financial doom, will shrug it off and say, at least my family is safe, unless the latter was ever threatened.

And -40C with the wind chill factor is bullcrap. Sure -25 with a strong wind is worse than -25 on a calm day but unless you live in a wind tunnel, it's not going to be that much worse. And +40C in the summer, well that's pretty unusual too, except that when it's +38 and humid, it might as well be +40 cause that's DAMN HOT. Unfortunately that happens a few times over a summer, but usually not for more than a week or so. All comments on the weather aside, Montreal is an AWESOME place to live. It has an almost European flavor. In Montreal you can step into any restaurant and you are almost guaranteed the food will be good. The shopping is great (if not as cheap as south of the border) and the nightlife vibrant and interesting. You'll love it!

Nice to read a reasonable post. The guy was being an idiot. If this had happened to me, I would have showed the receipt and then never gone back to that store again. But let's say I have a more confrontational nature, I would have returned the item to the counter and asked for my money back saying that I don't patronize shops who treat all their customer like criminals. I would have made my point, denied a sale to the store. His whole attitude was pointlessly confrontational. Then he compounds things by refusing to show his license to the police officer. So OK, he didn't HAVE TO. Big freaking deal. The police was called due to a situation HE created. It's not like he was randomly pulled over for having a funny hairdo. Put yourself in the police officer shoes. Here is this guy who is creating a commotion. An all too routine situation, in his world. He's probably already got this guy pegged as a troublemaker. What most people in this situation would do is cooperate fully with the cops to show that they are reasonable people being harassed by an overzealous store employee. But no. He decides to be an ass to the cops too, therefore confirming to the cop that he is dealing with a troublemaker. He was charged with "being an ass and wasting police resources". Since there is no such charge they came up with something else. He ruined his little sister's birthday because he wanted to be right, damn the consequences. He's an ass.

Well, I've never seen these bootleg DVDs, but I cannot conceive of any way that the better quality ones are produced from hand held cameras, operated by member of the audience, state of the art or not. But the awful hand-held bootlegs seems to be the focus of their efforts, searching bags, repeating the anti-piracy message ad nauseum, even threatening foreign countries into enacting laws to protect their commercial interests. It just seems so hysterical and overblown. I'm sure they do loose sales due to piracy. But it's nowhere near what they claim they do. The significant losses are no doubt due to organized networks who have access to better source material than a hand-held camera in the back of a theater. So focus on those and stop treating everyone in your cinema like a potential criminal. They are forgetting one huge glaring fact. They need us. We don't need them. If I never go into another theater again, my life will go on just as it has. Will theirs?

  16. Re:uhh....wait....what? on Canadian Theatre Chain Sued for Abusive Search · · Score: 1

I have to call bullshit on this as well. This must be some sort of industry boogeyman. There is no way filming from inside a theater can produce any kind of a watchable product. If anyone purchases a bootleg version or download one, they weren't serious about watching the movie anyway, and would have never purchased a ticket. Considering all the drawback of the theater; the crowds, the price, the inflated prices at the snack bar and now the harassment, why would anyone choose to see a film in this way instead of in the comfort of their own home? Because a movie is an entirely different specie when seen on a large screen. If you are interested enough to pay the ticket price to watch a movie, you aren't going to settle for a crappy bootleg version. And I heartily agree with some of the posters here. Stop harassing your PAYING customers. They paid their tickets, they have done exactly what the industry want. What's the point of going on about piracy after they are sitting in the theater. It's like yelling at your good kid when he comes home on time, because your troublemaker kid is still out.
