Like others have already said, backing up to optical media is a pain.. Like seriously 4 gig discs? Ugh.. Painful.
I agree in spirit, but I also remember the days when pkzipping something onto two dozen 3.5 inch floppies was no big deal... why can't Windows XP write files to multiple discs?
If you read the IE blog [msdn.com], you'll see that what happens is if you don't install the IE7 blocker, then Windows Update (if set to automatic) downloads IE7, then you're presented with options to "Install", "Don't Install", or "Ask Me Later". If you choose "Don't Install", then you're never asked again, even when later security updates occur (see the comments portion of the blog for this info).
So it actually downloads software before asking if I want to install it? It seems to me that there should be an option to only download patches rather than entire packages...
Automatic Updates will first notify people when IE 7 is ready to install and then show a welcome screen that presents key features and the choices to install, not install or postpone installation.
It appears, therefore, that they haven't yet resorted to force-feeding; and until security chief Stephen Toulouse eats his dogfood [theinquirer.net], moreover, force-feeding would be unconscionable.

Additionally, Microsoft on Wednesday plans to make available a special tool to block automatic delivery of the new browser version [...]
It would seem that your security update tool is still going to annoy you about new software unless you download some software to stop it...
Am I alone in not being attracted by all these bells and whistles phones have these days? I want a phone to be a phone - I already have a digital camera to take pictures, and a music player to play music. Why try to cram all these features into a mobile phone, which just complicates the user interface and adds cost?
Personally I hate the bells and whistles too, in large part due to the fact that the extras are usually at the expense of the quality and reliability of the actual phone component! (And the inflated price of course.)
However there are a lot of people who do like the crap, and why deny them? I just wish there was still an option to get a 'normal' phone.
But when the brain fault tolerance isn't there, the only way for the brain to get back lost abilities is to start growing new neurons, making new axon connections and to build a new neural network (this ability tends to diminish quickly with age, however). If microprocessors fail, you can't just have a computer make new ones and rebuild new physical wirings, unless I've missed some really stunning breakthroughs in nanotechnology over the past few days.
Surely that depends on where the model starts and ends - if it continues to operate with faulty components and informs the right person (who fixes it), that meets your criteria, doesn't it?
Or if you are really feeling adventurous, you could use a standard formal report structure similar to those that have already solved the problem of reporting technical information... Synopsis => Findings => Conclusions => Recommendations...
PPTP works well enough for me too. Certainly fits into the 'cheap' basket, although possibly not 'secure' if you are really into that sort of thing (technically it does have encryption though). Funnily enough, it works best without Windows - just install a cheap Linux box as a gateway at each point! (This would allow you to use any of the above VPNs anyway...)
Ah, memories. I used to have an after school cleaning job, and since the place was so dusty we blew out the PC cases with compressed air on a regular basis. The guy who showed me how to do it pointed to the power supply and told me "don't blow in there because that's where the CPU is and you don't want to damage that!"...
We were told something similar with a new software package... turns out that a single registry key needed slightly different permissions. I wasn't too impressed with their suggestion that all users need to be administrators either!
We are required to prove we keep regular off-site backups, take laptops home at night etc along with the requirement to have a monitored alarm on the premises to even get the insurance in the first place.
I haven't heard of getting discounts for further efforts...
I believe the (possible) patent you reference above is in regard to the HD24 and HD24XR product operation (writing), whereas the driver being discussed here is simply a way of reading from the device.
I agree with the poster who suggested offering to work with Alesis to release an official Linux driver. Surely this just helps them expand their market?
I agree totally. There are plenty of organisations out there harvesting and selling our information without going after the ones that tried to keep it confidential!
If I am using a search engine, I am not interested in finding what I am looking for! If I want to waste my time trying to win prizes, I will buy a scratchy ticket.
In order to avoid this conflict, a different-colored cross is often used.
Out of curiosity, anyone know how different the color has to be for it to be non-infringing? How specific is a trademark in this case? Would it be okay to use orange-red? How about #FF0033? I'm just wondering if there is a well-established standard for how different the color would have to be for someone to use the symbol legally.
Come to think of it, I believe a lot of the first aid kits around here are universally green with a white cross... never noticed that before.
I don't consider office space as part of my salary [...]
I think this is an important distinction - I somehow doubt an employer will pay you more if you ask to install a cheaper server. Most business expenses are a careful balance between cost and getting the job done right.
Hopefully there's a way to convert all my current data (about 50 hours of entry worth) into GnuCash's format. I'm definitely willing to give it a try..
Don't ring support again - another 10 phone calls and you could re-key it...
I think it is some kind of rule that any support hotline may not be manned by people that are native english speakers.

Who would they peddle their viagra to if there was no-one else on the Internet?

All very good unless the employees are female, in which case all previously productive time will be spent gossiping.
Apologies to both of the female readers who do not fit the stereotype.

Well, if this is the case, then just find a similar approach to some of the other suggestions...
Once set up, step 3 should only be one extra click to save time and effort.

If you use the page linked to in the summary, you'll need longer than that to wait for it to load!
Also less likely to be outsourced.

I have seen the future of mobile computing, and it is not on cellphones.
I quite agree with the latter part of your comment - care to enlighten the rest of us on the first bit?
At the risk of getting the same treatment, mod parent up!
