um, since when? I returned a few packs of buttons I got at radioshack the other day 'cause I accidentally bought normally closed instead of normally open. No questions asked. I have yet to be told 'sorry, you can't return this without a valid reason'. You buy it, change your mind, take it back. it happens.
So you claim we can't design AI smarter than ourselves, yet we could create AI that designed AI smarter than us? But then wouldn't the AI be designing something smarter than itself? And if it can't be smarter than us, then wouldn't that mean that we would also be able to create something smarter than ourselves?
Ubuntu won't install at all on my comp. Kubuntu has shitty wireless support and not much software. Mandriva so far has handled everything I throw at it. Wifi set up in...three clicks. Not a problem. Works on every comp I've tried it on. Comes with software to do EVERYTHING. And it is by far the easiest distro to use that I have found.
So it's better to spend $500 for a new comp than $50 for a new mobo? 'Cause I have never even considered spending over $50 on a mobo. I currently have a nice A-Bit, supports up to 8GB of RAM (currently have in 3.5. heh), an AMD64, and all the standard features, which I got for $50. '4x what other boards cost' could be $100. Hell, I've even seen 'em for cheaper. As for the OEMs not including true recovery disks (I say OEMs instead of 'budget manufacturers' becaue I highly doubt that most people would consider Gateway, HP, and Compaq 'budget manufacturers'), you can usually get a real install CD off them for $5-10. Pain in the ass, yes, but not that big of a deal. They usually make it pretty damn hard to get to those recovery partitions too.
I'm all for privacy, and that would definitely influence my vote. But Clinton seems to feel very strongly that the first ammendment shouldn't exist, so there's no way in hell she's gettin my vote.
I've never managed to get the ubuntu installer to even start on my computer. Damn thing just won't run. A friend was trying to try out Linux and was recommended Ubuntu, and had the exact same problem. I pointed him to Mandriva and he hasn't had a problem since. So I tend to be bias against Ubuntu. But I know more people personally that have seen it fail than have seen it work.
Honestly, I've never used the upgrades. hah. You might have had a bad distro though. It seems that every other version is kinda crappy, though which ones work sometimes depends on your hardware. For example, 9.2 ran rock solid back when I was starting out...never had a single problem with it. 10.2 made me switch to slackware. NOTHING worked right. I came back though for 2006, and haven't had many problems yet, though it's a fairly recent install. I dunno if I'm the best person to be giving advice on this though...I'm only about halfway into the second year since I discovered linux. Still quite new to it.
Debian and Gentoo are a pain in the ass to install. Period. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Mandriva. It also 'just works'. Even my wifi was detected and properly configured without any problems, without any messing with ndiswrapper or the CLI. I mean, you can set stuff up that way if you want, but I much prefer doing the config work AFTER I have a fully working system.
Um, IIRC from my science classes, one of the biggest problems with nuclear power is the plain hot water. If they dump it into rivers, it can screw up the ecosystem pretty badly. So if geothermal is doing the same thing, how is that any better? As for the nuclear waste, I seem to recall a story on here about using big lasers to make it decay REALLY fast.
Adblock blocks the specific ad. It doesn't block the ad location. Look at the URL before you block it next time, and you'll probably see a LOOONG string of seemingly random characters at the end. Delete those and they'll probably go away.
This was planned for release at the end of 2000 by a company by the name of C-3d. It was called 'FMD':
"The first generation of disc productions from Constellation 3D will be a family of 120 mm multi-layer FM-discs with capacity up to 140 GBytes and with read speed up to 1 GBytes/s." http://www.digit-life.com/articles/3ddisk/
Hit the first result when you google 'spam map'. The 'mailinator' one. What's it show? Most of the locations pinpointed are within the US. 10 out of 15. The others are in China, Spain, Germany, and Brazil.
Youtube doesn't work for you? Works fine for me on Mandriva....
Just look through the page source and grab the video file URL if you really need to use MPlayer.
Well that's just 'cause ubuntu kinda sucks. I've never managed to get it to install on my computer either. Installer won't even boot. Try Mandriva, that's a real nice one. Slackware ain't bad either if you're willing to do some more work on it.
Why the heck do you need paid hosting for that? I run a proxy off my free host. I've got a gig of space and 5 of bandwidth...should be more than enough for a proxy for several people. I mean, I understand the use of dedicated servers, but it seems like quite a waste of money just to run a proxy.
I just don't see what the big deal is. EVERYONE puts ads for themselves on their products. How is it different from my multimeter having a Radioshack logo on it, my graphics card heatsink being shaped to say 'ABit', or my batteries having a giant Duracell logo on 'em? I trust Sony less because they're infecting PCs, not because there's a Sony logo on all their products. I just don't understand how one line of text that I never even noticed before all this crap degrades the quality of their page. What about the sponsored results? That's more a 'breach of trust' than anything else. All google is doing is saying 'Hey look! We do that! You like our search, maybe you'll like our other stuff!'
I find it a 'breach of trust' that the firefox creator is wasting time on pointless crap like this instead of actually, ya know, working on the browser. Maybe I'll have to give Opera another try.
No, see, my entire point is that google isn't modifying their search results. If they were, google image search would be the first result when you searched for 'pictures', instead of on page 5.
I haven't ever seen google appear to be unfair in their search results. Google 'pictures'. If they were unfairly promoting their own products, google image search or picasa would be on the top. AOL pictures is on page two, google image search is on page 5. The thing they DO do is, before the search results, say 'Tip: Looking for pictures? Try Google Images'. What's wrong with that? They're not even pretending it's a search result, they're just saying they have a product you might be interested in. Might as well complain that the last EA game I bought came with a flyer advertising other games, but *gasp*, they were ALL EA GAMES! Actually, no, that's worse. Quite a bit worse.
My wifi card worked without any real config or install needed. It's a trendnet or something like that, can't remember exactly. Of course, I do know how much of a pain in the ass these things CAN be...I had a belkin that I never got installed, and my bro's laptop took about 5 hours, and we pretty much kept doing the same exact thing and each time it got a little bit closer.
I've never been able to get Ubuntu to install right on my box, but number one sounds like an Ubuntu problem, not a Linux problem. CD and DVD burning worked for me as a user out of the box on Mandriva. So did my wireless connection actually. And if you wanna talk about load, try running Freenet. Locks up XP in under 10 minutes, but on Mandriva I can't even tell it's running.
As for.NET and other software...no argument here. But for me, there's not much I need that Linux doesn't have, and what I really need most is the stability.
If they can't handle you using it, they shouldn't give it to you. I'm pretty sure I max out my bandwidth most of the time with Freenet... Of course, that may be why comcast refuses to stop the DoS attacks coming from their own network....
I saw that exact site around 3 years ago.

outrage? over helping to kill kitties? That's a good thing. Damn demon spawn deserve it.
And the true price of the 'Microsoft Tax' is:
$70.

Just what I've been looking for recently, actually! If they manage to make a decently priced e-book reader to go along with this, it would be perfect.
