Actually.. I am one of the students that was messing with this machine..
The reason why I'm sure we didn't empty the machine of all its cash (asside from that whole breaking the law thing), is that there was no way to access the money-dispensing mechanism from the controls we had access to (read: only from the touchscreen)
The numberpad was totally useless, as windows didn't recognize it, and the character map is pretty slow for trying to actually do anything useful..
About a month ago, I bought one of these for my mom, to replace her ailing early p2 machine. I must say that I was taken aback when I read the manual to the machine. It described how Fry's explicitly does not support linux. The next page after that contained what the default password to the machine was. And that was where the Linux instructions ended. After that followed 5-6 pages detailing multiple methods to remove Linux and install Windows, and then explaining that they only had tech support for Windows on these machines if you called them.
I dunno, but I was pretty sure that if you sell a computer loaded with one operating system, they should support it.
Oh yeah, and they don't even explain the undeniable fastest way to put windows... delete the partition information and make a new fat32 entry into the partition table... duh
I also will pay for shipping if you would be willing to send me one of these couputers.... coinsidentally enough, I'd be using it in a different Home Audio project, kinda similar to this one.
Wow... if this is not the penultimate "Upgrade Now scheme. I know that all those people still using office 95/97 are gonna read this and immediately throw a coniption.
Mean while MS sits back and reaps the profits off of this "mysterious" malicious code.. which was "accidently" discovered by them.
I bet they have a staff of grease monkey coders working 24 hrs a day wourking on some security flaw to grandfather windows 98 and 95 as well so they can get everyone to upgrade to XP....
I'll have to remember this trick for when I own a greedy multinational company that wants to increase the ammount of money we steal from the poor end users.
Well, we have always known that the japeneese are leaps and bounds ahead of us in miniaturization. And since Transmeta's target audience seems to be people who are looking for small, low power apps, of course the japaneese market is going to snap that up.
Slashdot's job is to report on all aspects of what's going on in the techy world. Yes, we're all pissed about the regulation going on in congress and the companies supporting it... but that asside, this game looks to have INCREDIBLE potential. I've been holding out on getting a PS2 thus far, but between GTA3, GT3, FFX, and now this new Kingdom Hearts... wow.. I think I may have to buy one.
Sorry for the little side tangent. But I guess the message I'm trying to conve is don't shoot the messenger (In this case slashdot)
I think this isn't a particularly huge supprise, because judging by some early sales figures i'd seen, it seems that gamecube was losing to the other 2 "next-gen" consoles. Everyone here knows that putting FF back on a nintendo system means selling MAJOR units (machines and game).
I mean hell, now that FF is going to be back on Nintendo I'm gonna have to buy me a gamecube (and with the next legend of zelda title on its way)... Nintendo just wants to remain a big competitor, and to be big, you have to have the big games... FF is probably the biggest game out there, so I think this is a strategy move by Nintendo
On a personal side note FF3US is my fav so far.. I'd really like to see 11 top it.
I seem to recall an "experiment" in Australia where many Cane Toads were released in order to get rid of insects in the environment... But that didn't work and now there are more of the toads that Australia knows what to do with...
I guess I'm just saying I don't want Africa to come bitching to me when the problems don't get solved
wait.... haven't sci-fi authors / filmmakers / uhh.. others, been saying this for many years, albeit in a slightly veiled manner.
I mean i just watched the matrix (for the 4000th time) and isn't that what that movie is saying somewhere in there... "Robots could take over"... o well
Well... if u bump the framerate down t 5fps... you're math proves that you're set. I mean besides, what can someone do in.2 seconds anyway that need to be caught on film.
Keep in mind that even old school analog surveilance equipment only on the order of 1 fps, if that, so 5 is definitley enough
I mean come on... the day after the whole free energy thing blows over,/. follows up in this "great" journalism by falsely reporting that BSD 4.5 is out..
Just a note that its technically is no longer a genuine Ferrari in all aspects. The body is a genuine Ferrari Tesstarossa.
HOWEVER, the new engine he has had put in does not appear to be a genuine ferrari engine.
I'm sure the person who is going to buy this will only buy it becasue it was john romero's ferrari, and not just because its a ferrari, so it most likely doesn't matter, but to ferrari purists (myself included) it really isn't a true piece of Enzo (Ferrari)'s Dream.
well.. it looks as if the matrix could happen now. since computers can improve themseves, it's only a matter of time before they discover they don't need us and enslave us to be energy generators for their cycles... crud
I got dibs on being CowboyNeal in the new virtual world... as long as I'm going to be the robot's whipping boy, why not slashdots as well?
Forget those days of having to plug your treadmill in and pay exorbitant prices during California's supposed "power crisis"..
Just order a "Walk-o-matic" treadmill... just put on the attached running shoes and as soon as you take your first step, the treadmill starts...
Want to go faster... start making your pace faster and the increased current from the shoes automatically makes the treadmill go faster... same for slowing down...
only $49,999.95.... call now.. 1-800-WALKIIES
Of course.. the only reason we have it is because we were so (excuse the cliche) "ahead of the times," that we registered it before the whole 4 year college rule came about... As a result, we have the distinct privilage of being one of the few non 4 year colleges with a.edu
First, I have serious doubts as to the integrity of this "discovery."
What they tell you: "I just wrote a program that rips dvd's to a 1 meg file"
What they don't tell you: "It accomplishes this by dropping off any and all sound. Then, it reduces the frame rate to 1fps and compresses this from nice full screen video to a little 200x100 video."
And if this isn't fake... they say $50 and downwards from there. Let's assume for a minute that they can actually manufacture these for $50. Notice I said manufacture. Now I figure the following costs per unit:
50 Production
70 for profit
40 R&D recovery
20 media (advertising, etc)
20 customs/importing
75 retail mark-up
equals
325 total
Now I'm not saying that these numbers are anywhere near the actual costs, but look at how you $50 product could easily get to cost $300 or more.
And... I have yet to hear anyone mention the reader. If this media is perhaps removable, or otherwise requires some type of reader/writer device, who's to say that the reader won't cost a lot more. I remember a good number of years ago, when CD recorders were thousands of dollars, but the media was by no means expensive.

But we had a ton of fun with it anyway.
Now, where'd that misteak come from?
mmmm.... mis-steak, its what's for dinner

This reminds me of the way that old fashioned VCR's read the time and date code embedded into the video signal of (most) public broadcasting systems.
BOTH MATTER EQUAL!!
