Either you're the best, or you're not - and your funding will reflect this. You obviously either don't work in science or you have the fortune to be in a lab of one of the 'big dogs'. Science is just as inbred with who you know and who's ass you kiss as any other profession. Having someone you go out for cocktails with regularly really helps in getting grants funded if they're sitting on your study section, for example. Science, unfortunately, is not as objective and pure as most people believe.

It surprises me there isn't more bad press on eBay. I recently had issues with someone obtaining my login information, changing my personal information and then bidding on ~$4000 worth of cell phones, dvd players, etc. In the process of undoing these purchases (in which I won't even go into detail about how many infuriating "live chats" _that_ took), I spoke with a PayPal tech whom I asked how this happen without being phished or replying to shady spam. He proceeded to tell me this occurs *all the time* by 'hackers' who extract information from browser cookies. I'm so done with eBay and PayPal. Good Riddance.

Interstingly, the same points that you use to argue against biology are the same reasons I could see it becoming the 'next big thing' (tm). The power of IT and the internet in general have been (and still are) basic driving forces between researchers for the last 10 years. Biotech (by definition) neccesitates the use of IT - bioinformatics, online databases and collaborations through email, websites and BBSs are currently used, and will be increasingly used in years to come. And in terms of social change, etc., science has proven itself as an impetus for such change to occur. Innovation in farming methods and health sciences in the last 50 years alone have had tremendous impact in socioeconomic situations of many developing countries, and hopefully will extrapolate to low-cost solutions for less fortunate countries as well.
