I don't understand why this post has to be about the iPod. This is true of all kinds of items sold on eBay, including everything from other types of mp3 players and media players to "external" enclosure hard drives and even whole computer systems (where the issue extends from multimedia content to installed commerical software applications for which the original media is not included because the seller intends to keep the license).

This isn't new, and it isn't about the iPod either. It's a much larger issue. Just go ahead and search eBay right now for devices with music and movies on them.

I mean seriously, are there people out there who go "ha ha my console makes more money than yours" or something? What a ridiculous idea. Why should a consumer care about anything other than whether they enjoy the thing and it offers the titles they want to play? This goes right up there with "oh this movie was good no matter what you say, because people bought a million tickets to it on the first day" or "that movie sucked, you can tell from the box office numbers."

Folks, good grief, just have some fun, this is entertainment.

If anything I'm surprised nobody is going after whoever figured it out for "circumvention" of something, since that seems to be all the rage.

What's to be done? Nothing. Rockstar is already reprinting the game without the content in it. Nobody even had to tell them to, they just are.

I'm a strong proponent of open source both in concept and in considering open source solutions at the Fortune 200 where I work as a technology strategist. However sometimes you really have a hard time selling some of the less enlightened at a big company on the merits of fully opening a project.

In case anyone interested in this subject hasn't checked them out before, you might want to read up a little on Avalanche, a consortium which provides a slightly less open but slightly more palatable (to resistant PHB's) option for corporations looking to experiment with sharing IP.

    http://www.avalanchecorporatetechnology.net/

I know the question was about open sourcing a corporate project, but I thought this might be relevant to mention because the idea came up constantly when the subject was broached of opening up a major platform product at our company. Sadly, in the end, neither the shared source or open source model was chosen.

The good news, though, was that the decision was made to continue the life of the project in question and in fact port it to Linux, rather than replacing it with a costly COTS solution - so at least it was a partial victory for the "clueful" involved.

I happen to have been doing some research all last week and this weekend on groups.google.com and have not noticed any strange changes at all. Sounds to me like they just changed a link on their front page to drive traffic to the beta, big deal?

...just how much are these flourescent lights saving you?

I mean they emit horrid RF noise, if you have sensitive hearing which I imagine you do as a recording engineer they sound terribly annoying, and they make everything look wrong (though I suppose some folks are more bothered by that than others).

Personally if I lived in a house with all flourescent lighting, I would just want to go outside all the time, and I would be kind of grossed out by how people, artwork, and even food looked...but that's me. Let's talk about you.

How much money are you really saving using these? You're setting up a home recording studio. I bet a couple of your cables alone, save any of your equipment, costs you more than these lights will save you over several years.

I think you'll find that in your case, you can be a lot more effectively frugal and environmentally friendly by worrying about a properly tuned digital thermostat or improved insulation and HVAC in your older house than saving any real money with these lights, which are fundamentally incompatible with your hobby.
