    Open source development is open source-- everyone benefits.

    If you don't think translating a game benefits you then don't translate it... I think this is great, that Valve builds a community of people dedicated to improved the gaming experience, just for fun.
    Who knows maybe this community could in the long run get other/more responsibilities, build levels and mods, the more involved users are the better, both for the users and the publisher. I mean if the community grows strong, maybe it'll complain about DRM, lack of linux support or unfair user agreements. Who knows?

    If you read the article (I didn't at first either), it's says that researcher are finding bugs in a lab that would never have been found otherwise (not by hackers either), but concludes that this is a good thing. It's a happy story about how bug bounties are good for everybody, and leads to better software...
    - It's not a dumb article, it's just a happy one :)
    We're just confused because articles are always expected to be negative, this one isn't, now smile :)

    If you excuse the excesses of government because of some limited good it might do (debatable) then you're just evil disguised as a pragmatist.

    No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

    That's from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
    Sure you have free speech, but you also have a right to protection from attacks upon your honour and reputation.
    And if you choose to use your free speech to express hate for innocent people, I sincerely hope any judge will hold the right for protection against such attacks higher than your right to express your hate.

    If I were contributor to a dual licensed project, I wouldn't mind having a promise that the product is kept alive and open sourced for 3 years after my latest contribution. I don't know if it's enough to justify copyright assignment, but at least it's an acknowledgement and not a bad one...

    Isn't that 3000 ppl died, that happens also in car accidents every few months.

    It's that USA went from being a respected member of the world community to a nation hated even among its allies. A nation that things it owns the whole world, can torture other country's ppls, can force them to act in ways it wants, and that is in everyone else's face.

    It was the day that marked the beginning of the end for the USA.

    Add "reinvent" the English language to the list too :)

    I doubt that the economy is to blame, is probably just that for some obscure reason(1), your products are getting more energy efficient.

    This summer, I was on vacation in California/Nevada/etc. basically driving from hotel to hotel... And oh the horrors we saw (energy wise), every single room had it's own air conditioning, but then again I suppose central systems are for communists, right :)
    Many places they were also "bright" enough to put the fridge in a closet without ventilation holes, granted I couldn't hear it, but I'm certain it was running all the time :)

    (1) I doubt the reason can be environmental taxes, as I noticed your gasoline is half price (compared to the EU).

    I presumed this conversation was about technology/knowledge workers - not professions with unions (auto workers, teachers, etc).

    I'm currently during a master in CS and I have two unions.
    And yes, one of them did recently go on strike during a conflict with an employer, who wanted to lower wages and not having to give 3 years notice prior to letting people go. IMO the union was a bit unfair, but they had members to represent.
    My other union is more focused on knowledge workers, but it will most certainly go to court for me, should that be necessary.

    As someone who'll be looking for a job in about 2 years, I have to ask, how do you know?

    If anybody started sending my resume around with the line "this person is really keen to work for you" (without m explicit consent), I'm sure my union would help me sue the hell out of them... (Well, granted that they're within reach of the law, e.g. residents in EU).
    But how do I know if someone asking for my resume is sincere? If he works for company X, can I safely assume he's not going to pitch people for current and former employees?

    That's as close to treason as I can see to the tech industry.

    Treason might be a bit harsh, but abuse of office and failure to represent the country's best interest, probably. - I hope we'll see heads rolling over this.

    This is because teachers are in a 'position of trust.'

    Then how about trusting teachers not to abuse your kid :)

    At the end of the day, you can legislate everything a teacher must/can say, but is that good?
    It surely prevents teachers from doing anything out of the ordinary, and in that case why not just replace him with a video tape...
    Bottom line: Trust that your teachers are competent and manage a healthy relationship with their students.

    If I remember correctly, teachers in my public school told us that we could always come to them if we had personal problems. Surely, they could abuse any such situation. However, I find it far more likely teachers might actually help the kid, get over the grief of loosing grandparents, stop others bulling or discover that the kid is being neglected at home.

    Okay, what I mean is that fb-friend doesn't necessarily imply friend, where as friend typically implies fb-friend.

    Granted that the rebels already have embassies in a quite a few countries, and have consistently stated they are interested in democracy, I think there might just be a chance we'll see that. But again they rebels aren't one homogeneous group, civil war is certainly still a possibility.

    The United States used to break up monopolies, pass environmental protection laws, establish consumer safety standards, workplace safety standards, etc. Corporations have now cornered the electoral market. 90% of the population will consider voting for one of two candidates, both of whom depend on large corporations to get elected.

    I don't think many EU citizens can tell you the name of the "president of the EU". In fact I wouldn't be surprised if most people can't tell you who is representing them in the EU parliament. Europe is still comprised of many small sovereign nations, and this is where all the interesting politics takes place, e.g. the stuff people care about healthcare, daycare, old-people-care, military deployments, educational support, etc...

    That said, don't think I'm not afraid of cooperate lobbyists.

    I had the pleasure of attending a boarding school in 9th and 10th grade, here it was normal to hang out with teachers after class, play board games, sports and what not... Teachers were always around, the principal even lived next door. I'm friends with some of them on facebook, and why shouldn't I be, I have "friends" on my facebook account who are a lot less friends than they are...

    That said, when you have authority over someone, you should always be aware of how you conduct yourself, even when you're off duty. I don't actively add kids, I was leader for at summer camp, to my facebook, that would be somewhat creepy.

    But just because you have a position of authority over someone, doesn't mean you can't be friends, and most certainly not facebook-friends (lets face it fb-friend != friend).

    I think you're right... Without Chrome javascript would still be slow and browsers wouldn't be so clean as they are today... Chrome paved the way for better web applications, and without it the web application platform wouldn't be as attractive.

    I'm sure using tax dollars and grants to use a system that illegally convicts innocent people without a trial or hearing is considerable different then a criminal stealing someones identity.

    What about fines? Not all fines needs to be brought before a court... If you don't want to pay your fine you don't pay, and you'll be dragged to court. I would assume that if your drivers license is revoked, you just ignore it, and then you're eventually dragged to court :)

    How many other companies have an installed base similar to that of Windows Xp?
    - BTW, if I where to run Windows, I'd definitively prefer Windows Xp and Office 2003, things have only gone down hill from there... ugly eye "candy", ribbons, poor performance and "security" features, what's good for...
    (I'm not sure if I'm joking, Windows Xp SP1 really was and still is the best competitor to Ubuntu).

    We should do the same here. Off the top of my head my quick list of subsidies that should be cut:

    • 1. Corn
    • 2. Ethanol
    • 3. Cotton
    • 4. Oil

    Even with my strong libertarian leaning I realize there is a social benefit to perusing real science and innovation.

    You guys subsidies oil?
    In most European countries there's high energy taxes on oil... In Denmark 8 USD/gallon is quite normal...
