This is not an issue of the US government wanting information and needing a shill to send it to them. It is simply a matter of Microsoft, as a U.S.-based corporation having to turn over information on all its dealings with extra-nationals at the U.S. government's request. Euro privacy law would prohibit some of that and since Microsoft makes use of European systems, this falls under Euro privacy law. It is a horrible mess but the U.S. law will trump the EU law because...
So at the end of the day, if the US decides to use it's power over MS to get information from servers located in Europe, the EU will sue the hell out of MS for knowingly violating privacy laws... Sounds like a loose/loose situation for MS:)
And if you catch cancer how long time will it be before your insurance gets rid of you? I know that would take a while before I loose my citizenship:)
but it's not just about the money and safety, it's also about helping out those who are less fortunate than me. And not having to listen to horrible stories like this...
they sound like a bunch of authoritarian thugs and I see absolutely no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt.
And that is exactly how they are presented. You don't known the wording for the petition in question, it could very well be inappropriate.
That said, if the School weren't out of line, they should have agreed to an interview.
Well, you can write a blogpost improving the documentation without creating a derivative work. So maybe documentation doesn't need to be free (as in freedom).
that said, most projects probably want its documentation to be free.
Agree... My parents can choose between fiber optics, cable-tv and telephone wires... but at what cost? At the end of the day, the good old copper wires can carry all the data most residents need... And if not, then you can layout fiber to the houses that needs more...
But no, where I live the government sold the copper cables to a private company, and electricity companies decided to dig up the roads everything to put fiber in. So now there's three different data networks available... And they all have to be maintained, operated and paid for by the customers.
Actually I doubt that you saved lives... Assuming that there would have been more successful terrorist attacks on the US without the wars... Then you might have exchanged American civilian lives for afghans civilian lives at a pretty horrible exchange rate (and at a fairly high price)...
Weapons aren't legal in most of the civilized world... Illegal possession of firearms gets you at least a year behind bars in my country... An illegal knife (>= 2.7 Inches) gets you a week, and that's the minimum punishment...
Why? If you buy skype you should buy it for the customer base... Facebook already have a huge user base... Wouldn't it be stupid to buy skype for the code base?
True, but outside the wild-west such contracts aren't respected by courts... It's quite common that the judge rules that basic consumer laws cannot be overruled by a 10 pages contract because consumers can't be expected to understand the contract... And thus are innocent... and should be protected...
Have you consider making education free ? And then decide politically, based on marked demand, how many slots of each major should be available for free...
Sure taxes sucks, but if you want research you need to pay for it... Private companies will never be able to put as much money into basic research, as a government will...
It's an academic environment... He can probably do just about anything he likes... We don't know the policies... If any at all...
His network might very well be isolated from any sensitive information... Don't assume IT is right, I once meet an IT worker who wouldn't let me see the WEP-64bit password when he configured my laptop for wifi:)
In an academic environment, e.g. somewhere where people do tech research, I wouldn't expect that every electronic thing hooked up needs to be run by IT. That's a very inflexible solution, that might work if network security and stability is valued higher than innovation and experimentation, e.g. if you're in a production environment, and not doing research... You can't do research if you're not allowed to act on your own initiative...
(In fact I wouldn't want to work anywhere I'm not required to act on my own initiative).
the overseas labor game is one we can't win and the terms are not fair yet we continue to try to play using fair rules. we lose every time. gee...
Actually the terms are fair, and that's why you're loosing... It's a free market, but workers in the western countries are too fat and spoiled to compete with Chinese labor...:)
If there's anything unfair here, it's the fact that poor people around the world have to starve while we don't...
On topic, Mr. Jackson should go back to high school and listen in the history classes, then he'll notice that technological development drives the economy and improves our living conditions... But it also make some jobs unnecessary (while also creating more new jobs)...
If he doesn't like that, he should go live with the Armish...
Did you look at the date of the press release? February 24th 2011. It is more than a month ago, and so far very little has been in the Danish media on the subject. Something is indeed rotten...
Well, did you take the time to write a letter in a newspaper ?
- It's not fair to cry about the lack of public debate if you're not willing to start it..
And unfortunately we can't expect politicians to hang out on slashdot...
Anyway, are we doing anything about this? do politicians even know that we care? Perhaps we (Danish slashdot users) should do something... ideas?
How is that different from any other platform or framework? Also you don't need to use the "debatable" parts... Assuming anybody cares, I mean they are probably only "debatable" in the US anyway...
If you want to write efficient code (have control of all allocations, etc) with some OOP sugar, C++ is a fairly decent choice...
And with some coding guidelines, C++ is not bad for application development either... I would rather use Qt/C++ than C#/Windows.Forms for GUI applications... Mainly because of Qt though, but C++ is not dead... It's a perfectly fine tool for many projects... Choose a tool that is right for the job...
And C++ is certainly still an important tool, what other well established fairly-low-level languages with OOP support do you find ?
The fundamental thing is that people are responsible for all their actions -- on record all the time -- except in clear situations where there is an expectation of privacy. Not in any bar.
Not really... it's unlikely that they can prove anything with his gmail account...
And the case will never hold in Sweden...
The news here is that some US judge signed a subpoena based on that email... Some might argue that such as judge is somewhat stupid... To put it mildly...:)

In order to build games for women don't you need to understand them ?
Does anybody (who can code) know what women wants ?
And if you catch cancer how long time will it be before your insurance gets rid of you? :)

Wait, this is for real?
Most, likely in Denmark we have a ministry of gender equality :)

Because we must follow the rules of war, our costs/losses are going to be exponentially higher.
Your costs maybe... But I really doubt that your losses in terms of lives are higher...
Why the hell is it news that someone made a complaint?
Because actively lying to your customers isn't okay... Don't you have customer protection agencies ?
Qt on Gnome is great... And qt on Windows Xp was also great... Haven't tried Vista or 7 though...
Weapons aren't legal in most of the civilized world... Illegal possession of firearms gets you at least a year behind bars in my country... An illegal knife (>= 2.7 Inches) gets you a week, and that's the minimum punishment...
And the nation that plays it is lost!
Redhat is a company... It's responsibilities is with it shareholders not the public interest of America... That's what you get with capitalism... :)

the university should reverse their thinking.

How exactly do you prove that no prior art exists?
That's an awful lot of "art"to go through...
