    Well, it's just plainly annoying to use software that doesn't get updated... If we didn't want new versions we'd all be running Debian stable :)

    I used to love KDE, and I remember looking forward to KDE4 2-3 years ago... Back then they made a lot of pretty plans about what was to come in KDE 4...
    But hey, sometimes things do go bad... And if you make huge changes like the KDE team have been doing, chances are you'll loose users when you don't release stuff for a few years...

    Hopefully the KDE devs keep working, and we may see KDE back in the game in a year or two... Hopefully sooner, but IMO unlikely...

    But yes, in this case we're are likely not seeing all the picture. And the teachers side is not portrayed in a forum post. Maybe is was a private class and maybe students signed an NDA before starting the class :)

    The only reason such users end up at microsofts shop is because msn is default start page in IE... E.g. to some users msn IS the internet.

    There's a whole bunch of people who are very loyal to MSN on the web and there's now almost a million users of MSN Mobile every month, within the space of 12 months of it being launched.

    Only aimed at stupid people, who are loyal to msn :)
    Seriously, the only reason to launch this service is that msn is default start page in IE, and there are so many computer illiterate users who thinks msn is the internet, because that's where their browser starts...
    This is just microsoft offering shitty services to users who are loyal to microsoft... :)

    Who said anything about making them care... But if windows didn't ship with IE, IE wouldn't be as tightly bundled with the os... and OEMs might ship with opera, firefox or whatever they think might give the best user experience. BTW, Many countries in the EU are semi socialistic, e.g. liberalsocialistic... And why is that relevant?

    I guess you're using an older version of Ubuntu, as I can't find the $LAPTOP_MODE or $HDPARM in /etc/acpi/power.sh
    But after updating from proposed updates it was disabled after fresh boot... Restore from suspend to ram still left in at 128 (checked using sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep "Adv").
    Anyway, it seems enabling laptop-mode in /etc/default/acpi-support did the trick... though it still 128 when on battery...
    Nevertheless changing BATT_HD_POWERMGMT from 1 to 254 did it when on battery... But shouldn't you use this feature ever?

    One, or IMO the only, strong argument that opponents of net neutrality have is that net neutrality will prevent backbone innovation...
    but if we have a loosely defined definition of open access, backbone innovation will still be possible within the limit of what is reasonable.

    AFAIK the source for the KDE libraries are LGPL, which means that if you bind them against a LGPL version of Qt you'd have LGPL KDE libraries...
    At least I remember to have read so somewhere....

    It's great that Qt becomes LGPL, but it doesn't mean that we should stop developing GNOME and GTK...
    Seriously there's lots of business that depends on GNOME and/or GTK, and lots of reasons to keep them alive...
    Competition among desktop environments is good and having two large desktop environments if probably a good idea... As it drives competition and innovation.

    Yeah, but if it's not enabled by default it doesn't matter...
    then it'll just mean that the slashdot audience and other computer literate users will advice people to use chrome... But if it's not be default most people will never try it, and it won't hurt Google..

    Google could still dual license other components like their javascript engine, etc... They could even dual license the GUI code, though binaries would still have to be distributed as GPL.

    I'm no lawyer, and they may be legally binding in the US, but I personally have no respect for such agreements. And I seriously doubts most courts have either...

    No, but I tend to think of Google as good guys... or maybe just, not bad guys, yet... :)
    Nevertheless, Google would probably like a Linux port, because it makes them look good in the community, which I assume they want to otherwise they're probably wasting money on SummeOfCode etc...

    So let me get this straight: Corporations should serve the community.

    I never said that "corporations should serve the community" and I'm not sure they always should, but doesn't the community consist of those who use a product... e.g. customers?

    I'm not saying the commercial interests should be ignored... But, you shouldn't expect the community to embrace your products and port them to linux, just because you've release the source for it...

    App store is not new technology... It's just known technology applied in a way the makes it usable... In fact, package management isn't a new technology, though *intentional* the backdoor is kind of innovative...
    The only thing that's new about it, is that existing technology, e.g. package manager and payment system, have been integrated in a user friendly manner....

    The community is not something you should rely on to help your business... The community does not magically embrace things for your benefit... The community is not here to serve your commercial interest...

    The community serves the community, and if you business plan involves having millions of volunteer developers work on your products, then you deserve to get your fingers burned.

    Of course, if you're releasing software into the wild and it needs run on many different machines you better make sure it performs well especially if it's a retail product. So spend the extra money and make it really good.

    People usually buys a product before they realize the performance sucks... And retailers always says that it's just because your computer isn't new enough... Which makes people buy new computers, not complain about the software...
    - Or may be I'm wrong...

    But, I don't know many non-computer-freaks who can tell you the system requirements of their computer, and even less that compare them to the minimum requirements of a game, and almost nobody who know that recommended system spec. is actually the minimum requirements for any practical purpose...
    And I don't blame them... I'm a nerd, no gamer, and I can't tell the difference between most modern graphics cards...
