Some libraries I have access to offers similar services... But I don't like them and can't really use them, because of the DRM...
Is DRM really the only solution here... ? Should we accept evil* like DRM!
Seriously, can't I just promise to be nice... and delete the file...
Or maybe implement the DRM in javascript, so that it runs everywhere, (and is easily cracked).
Is DRM really acceptable here?
* Yes, my world is very simple, everything related to DRM, Microsoft or security through obscurity is evil... Google is not all evil, and all free software is good !:)
how is it now a EULA? In the license it permit use of this software with no discrimination against anyone.
I wrote, "not an EULA", grandparent wrote "...forbid the distribution or use of the software in East Texas" which does IMO because of the word "use" mean that GPL should be an EULA...
Why not forbid distribution of GPL software in any country software patents all together... ?
</sarcasm>
By the way, the GPL is not an EULA and cannot dictate terms of usage, only distribution!
Anyway, I assume you're joking, because the GPL is all about giving users freedom, not protecting yourself from being sued...
It's more general than that. The ENTIRE EU is more clueful when it comes to tech than the ENTIRE US.
As a European I would like nothing more than to agree with you... Sadly, it's not more that a few years ago, that screenshots was used as evidence in a court case in Denmark...
To be fair the defendant had previously admitted the infringement, though he'd redrawn that statement...
Nevertheless, the plaintiff had not kept anything but a few screenshots, from when the search was conducted...
I've not looked at Kindle or other e-reader, or ebooks in general as I assume they are encumbered with DRM...
Is my assumption wrong?
And if not, then how am I suppose to read a book on an ebook reader, when my desktop won't be able to crack the DRM before the Sun burns out?:)
If the author doesn't wish to license his works to me, then how can I be interested in buying... What exactly am I buying??? A license it can't be called as law dictates that I can do anything I want with a legally licensed work...
Overselling is okay, but you have to be ready to invest and deliver the product to those of your customers who actually do intent to use your product to the full extend. If you don't want to do that then change the pricing scheme!
So did I... and it worked fine... I even wrote an email during the outage... And it was send now that gmail's up again...
that said I wish GMail had a native client instead... Thunderbird or Evolution just doesn't cut it for me... They remind me way too much of my dad, who uses Outlook... Perhaps I ought to write a serious python frontend for GMail... With storage backend, and webmail-like GTK interface...
As a kid I was always told not to give my real name and address online because there could be pedophiles...:)
* Loss of privacy.
Yes, but in general you shouldn't share information on facebook, twitter, you blog, website or anywhere else online that you don't want everybody else in the world to know about you.
That's as simple as it gets... Now really is your full name something you don't want to share with everybody else?
Also it's okay to be critical about what pictures you accept being associated to on facebook... And it's okay to censor your blog for comments you don't want people posting on it...
Personally, I've linked my slashdot account to my website, on which my name, address, email and phone number can be found. And so to the extent possible I try to only post stuff that I'd stand by (yes, sometimes I'll stand by for some bad comments too:))... And if I absolutely must say something I don't want put my name on, then I'll consider if I really ought to post it anyway, and I must AC is always an option.
It's a lot like real life.
It that a metaphor people on slashdot understand? How about a car analogy.
(Sorry, couldn't help but wondering:) )
I'm sorry but isn't a digital download is a license and a service... Isn't there already sales tax on stuff like that? And if so why doesn't it apply...
I'm sorry but no sales tax sounds kind of weird... but maybe that's just because where I live there's 25% sales tax on everything! Including services, downloads, licenses etc... I'm pretty sure I pay 25% sales tax when I buy mp3's online...
I only need a very little 3d graphics so intel is actually very good... I had an intel chipset in my old laptop and I never had driver issues of any kind... In my new laptop I've got an ATI card, which I regret... I have nothing but problems with it... And there is NO open drivers for it... Which is in fact the only reason I went ATI and not nVidia or Intel. And unless ATI starts actually delivering drivers for their mobile hd series then I'll be looking for intel for my next laptop, that's for sure...
3: the music industry finally understood that part, though they increased the price of new tunes by 30 cents
In your country maybe... Where I live, Apple sells some music drm-free, but I can't access their service form Linux... And other distributors are either not distributing Europe (e.g. Amazon) or DRM infected.
I would feel much differently if everything passed into the public domain in 15 years, and patents lasted 5 years.
I like the idea, but how much stuff do you write today, that will actually compile in 15 years, and much more interesting be used by anyone?
Okay, maybe if you're really cool some of what you do will still be present in some derivative works... But really, what projects today will be of any interest in 15 years?
I certainly don't see code from 1994, that I don't want to touch because of license issues... (Which is probably because I don't see much code from 1994)
I hate to bring this to the attention of the nerd community.... the world existed before the explosion of the internet. This is hard to believe, but true. I have it on good authority that the world started sometime in the 1920's.
I'm sorry but the clock first started ticking the 1st of January, 1970, before that time did not exist...
In my country there's not a lot of difference between rich and poor... That's because people with low income pays 40% in income taxes and people with high income pays 60%, so there's not a huge need for income dependent energy taxes...
Offtopic, but IMO, responsible people doesn't leave their computer on 24x7, that's just a sign that environmental taxes on electricity are way too low in your country!
But still US-only and DRM infected!
Some libraries I have access to offers similar services... But I don't like them and can't really use them, because of the DRM...

comsumers taking their money elsewhere does everything.
Just, wondering where else would you take your money...?
:)
Note: Never used Netflix since I'm from Europe, but if you know an alternative open to Europeans I like to know about it

And unlimited means unlimited.
Well, really since if time didn't put a limit to you traffic usage ISPs could argue that truly unlimited is a physical impossibility...

Any suggestions?
All of OpenDNS filters are optional... I use OpenDNS to circumvent the Danish internet censorship...
Human innovation is invincible.
And you'd claim human stupidity isn't?

I've found monodevelop to be, not stable, but rather easy to do .Net development with...
