Check out the Motley Fool website. They have good advice on saving up based on your goals -- saving for that new car(dont lose principal) vs. saving for retirement (maximise returns). They also have a book and pretty decent advice in general. If you want one piece of advice, dont play the markets by buying individual stocks, just invest in an index fund.

Tecplot is good. I use it a lot but it needs an X11 installation on OS X. Also, it is expensive. It is good for contours, vectors and 3D plots. If your needs are not that intense, I would recommend either Matlab or Mathematica, the student versions cost less than $200.

  6. I just got slammed too on The Joys Of Big Business; or Why AT&T Long Distance Sux · · Score: 1

I am in Minneapolis and my phone was slammed one weekend I was away in New York. I finally got it set right and this is what you need to know.

    1. Call the FCC and register a complaint. Their phone number is (888) 225 5322.

    2. Call your local company and tell them you want a PIC freeze on your phone number(s). This stops them from changing your long-distance provider unless you call them up and give them the right code effectively ending all forms of slamming.

    3. When you get your next bill, look for the charges carefully. MCI should reconnect you for free and any charges made to you by ATT should be dropped or charged at the same rate you get from MCI. Your local access company should do that.

Whenever you call any of the companies, make copious notes of every thing that transpired and get the operator's name and id. A paper trail is very useful in getting rid of the huge charges you might incur.

    Good Luck.

Actually, they are not two maverick scientists and there is more to the story than that.

The older guy of the two is a historian who wants to study Sparta (IIRC) and the younger guy is a newly appointed physics professor. They create a working model and pass it on to the younger guys uncle who is a professional grant writer.

More than the social effects of the said machine which was only implied with an "Oh sh*t" in the end (sort of), I was intrigued by the professional classes. People were experts in only one field of science and not allowed to explore any other field but their own. IIRC, the young scientist was an gravity expert and the historian convinces him to study light.

The reason the machine did not work was because looking back in time is like looking into water, the deeper you want to see, the dimmer your vision becomes. Too much dust (figurative) was the explanation.

  12. Translation -- sort of on Sony's Palm PDA · · Score: 4

I had my Japanese colleague read and explain the site for me. Here is what I gathered.

As some have correctly surmised, it is an artist rendition. Sony does not have a working prototype. It is expected by the end of this year. It will be released in the VAIO product line.

Besides the memory card and camera, it will incorporate a jog dial. Seems like Sony likes them a lot. I have no idea why! That was lost in the translation.

Add on modules in the memory stick will have GPS, PHS(kinda like PCS, data capability, etc.) and can play MP3s. Runs on a Bluetooth chip and has a Firewire/iLink/IEEE1394 port (or syncing) besides USB syncing.

Supposedly there is a push for also making a Handspring compatible expansion slot. NTT (Nippon Telecom something) will provide the content. They have an existing agreement with Palm Computing.

That is all I got. Maybe a native speaker or an educated guesser can take it from here.
  13. Not so dense review of the PS2 on Playstation 2 Emotion Engine · · Score: 1

There is an extremely lighter review of the PS2 posted on gamecenter.com. Apparently, the antialiasing problem with the PS2 is "When the system runs in high-resolution at 60 frames per second, the graphics are spit out at an interlaced half-resolution (640-by-240 pixels) to speed up the graphics processing. This creates unacceptable amounts of aliasing on diagonal lines, and polygon edges flicker like crazy." Apparently the DC does not suffer from this as it "outputs video in a completely different--and more visually pleasing--manner". Could somebody enlighten me on this 'different manner'.

Heat generation during read/write operations is hardly the biggest problem. Lower the entire thing in a vat of liquid ethane.

Adhesive tapes are made by extruding/casting a liqud layer which is dried to make the polymer film. There are so many problems with getting an uniform film using this technique. Inbuilt stresses during drying, edge effects, etc. etc.

This is one reason LCDs are so expensive. If only they can be made like polymer films...

  16. Grapes, Flaming Toothpicks and Pickles on Godzilla vs. Mecha-Quickies · · Score: 5

The flaming toothpick in a microwave actually results in a plasma at the burning tip. There was an article here some time ago. (Too lazy/busy to search)

For another interesting effect, take a power cord, strip the insulation at the end, stick the two ends into a pickled dill and turn on the power. If done properly, you will end up with a nice glowing pickle. Dont do it for too long since it starts burning and stinking up the place.
