FTA: On Valentine's Day, there is spike in the numbers of bloggers who use the labels "loved" or "flirty", but also an increase in the number who report feeling "lonely".
So let me get this straight... all this to discover that people either think about their relationships or lack or relationships on Valentines Day...
This is the ultimate geek software. "What is this strange thing... emotion... I'll build a software program to explain it to me."
My first thought on seeing this article was... "is this a joke"?
I'm not sure... data should be retained to a certain extent, however, that data should not be arbitrarily available to governments and companies. And at the moment, i don't trust that it wouldn't be.
Speaking as someone who inheritted their grandmother's Sweedish skin... suffice to say they could never rule the world: they'd die of 3rd degree sunburns within days in most locations.
Are there any Libertarians who do believe in socialism?
That's the joke actually. Many people are so woefully ignorant of divergent political stances that they don't understand the differences between the two. (i.e. Libertarians are just really radical right-wing nut jobs, a la free market... or Libertarians are just really radical Socialists, a la freedom in social situations).
It's supposed to ironic.
and the fact that you're acting like you're victimized when only one of your last 24 posts is moderated below the +2 you get by default for your karma bonus, and it's about Red Hat and not really economic at all
The -1 Flamebait bit is a swipe at the fact that I often see conservative political posts market Flamebait or Offtopic, and liberal political posts amrked Insightful or Interesting. Of course its going to happen in a peer review system populated with people who are more likely to be sympathetic to a more "left" cause than a "right" cause, but I don't believe that any system is above criticism.
The thing that Dell needs to do to sell themselves to gamers, is include NO bundled software in it. Gaming systems don't need AOL For Broadband, and RealPlayer, and Quicktime, and Adobe Reader 7.0, and Microsoft Office, etc.
Dell is avoided because their computers almost need to be formatted right after they are bought. No computer will run games well with that much bloatware installed.
Which would be impressive, considering that their Gamecube controller just didn't live up to its predecessors.
The GameCube controller was, in my opinion, absolutely spectacular. I don't understand why some people don't like it. The thing didn't have any awkward buttons.
But AT&T can control their competition too through industry groups. They control a signifigant amount of the backbone that competing services must use in order to compete.
If the government bought all the backbone off of the Teir 1 providers and made it a federal municipal service, like the Interstate highways, then perhaps AT&T could be controlled by market forces. As it is right now, AT&T might as well be named All Telecomunications & Transfers.
A lot of people support red hat on the principal that they are trying to get the world to adopt something which is open at its core... why are open source proponents turning a blind eye to how Red Hat's actions and nonconducive to the open source ideal?
Yeah, but based on some actions IBM has taken in positioning with Microsoft, the move may backfire. IBM is one of the only companies that, if they think they will win, will continue to prosecute, even after it becomes more profitable to settle. Some call it altruism... others think its just revenge... the point is, you fuck with IBM and they make an example out of you.
The article lists SCO submitting 45,000 pages of evidence and materials... What IBM could choose to do is have them scanned and provide the court with the alleged infringing documents to check against.
Man... I'd hate to be the inter that got that one...
"Hey, Tim. You've done some really good work lately. We really like where you're going. That's why we're trusting you to scan these ultra-important legal documents. Just let us know when you're done, and keep up the good work."
After a while, once the word gets out and customers start to leave for alterative "single tier Internet" providers, the telcos will either have to quietly drop their demands and rate limits or suffer the inevitable stockholder backlash when their profits start to slide.
Except for the part where the "multi-teir" providers own a decent amount of the backbone.
I never understood this. Do you think that your e-mail information isn't available to Microsoft if you have hotmail, or Yahoo with Yahoo Mail? Do you think that your data isn't available to ANYONE else unless you run your own mail server?
Happened to me. Completely toasted my Dual-Layer DVD/CD combo burner/rewrite drive.
Had no clue why until the first article on/. about Starforce appeared. Checked on my computer and sure enough, there it was. Had to go out and buy a whole new goddamn drive.
Does it occur to no one that in order to be 'obssesive' about something, like a video game for instance, there have to be present psychological problems? Since when do we hold companies accountable for selling a product to a distributer who doesn't get a psychological profile before selling to their customers?

Too late. I've already patented it.

I would be snide and affronted... but that I wage the same crusade with others. I'll go now. /cry
Hmm... posting it on slashdot DEFINATELY won't draw phisher's attention to it...
What the hell made Florida ever think that this was a good idea?
Best quote ever:
"Microsoft may bitch, Intel may bitch," but the customers want Blu-ray, and that's what matters to the PC maker, Kettler said.
At least he had something right, eh?
prohibitive on the PC unless you have a new computer, outragious on the systems
Go out and pick up a used Gamecube with four controllers and Smash Bros Melee for under $200 and tell me its outrageous on systems.
Controller itself - designed for smaller hands.
Bullshit. I have bigger hands than anybody I know.
Which would be impressive, considering that their Gamecube controller just didn't live up to its predecessors.

I am curious about how this is a proof of concept virus if it has been done before surely the concept has already been proven?
It wasn't slashdotted last time?

Why did this remind me of that Family Guy episode?
"President Douchebag: I just got a call from my challenger.
Crowd: Boooo!
President Douchebag: Now now, Mr. Daterape ran a fine campaign."
The most amusing part of this article was that it's evidentally been tagged "tort reform".

The player would glisten and be dazzling... but I imagine that the headphone would still look just as tacky.

It's just lucky for them that they didn't try to sue IBM over a patent this frivilous...
