I think one important aspect to Apple's constant user downgrades of the iPod/iTMs is that they stop customers from doing what Apple tells them to do: Back up their songs.
It is very easy to back up your songs, as they exist both on your computer and on your ipod. It's data. Copy it to backup media.
Yes, in a situation where you've lost the original computer drive, then you may need to get the data back off of the ipod. It's not that hard.
Now whenever I see his name on Slashdot, I see everyone praising his hipness. Is it because he posts on Slashdot? Has a blog? Is a role model to countless nerd teenagers? I don't get it. Seriously.
Maybe it's because he's had a blog since long before it was fashionable. Maybe it's because he's a linux user like most slashdotters. Maybe it's because, along the way, he got paid to kiss Ashley Judd.
Wesley may have been a loser to some, but Wil never was.
the g4 imac, maybe. but the g4 and blue g3 towers (which i had in my high school computer graphics lab and a school papers) were pop-open and goink style, stripping ram being a 5 second operation.
Not Apple's fault. An off-the-shelf padlock will keep people out of that case design. They could have bought padlocks by the case for next to nothing and solved the problem.
If you jump through a whole lot of hoops, yes, it'll do those things. The point is to be able to easily do them. DRM, in any form, doesn't make it easy.
Really? Quoting the original poster:
to make backups of my music,
They are simply data files. How hard is that?
to make compilations of my music,
That's one of iTune's basic functions.
and to share those compilations with as many friends as I'd like
Burn 'em to CDs and pass them around to your heart's content.
But I'd refuse to take DRM music even if it were free. The Audio Home Recording Act gives me the right to make backups of my music, to make compilations of my music, and to share those compilations with as many friends as I'd like, as long as I don't charge anything.
ANY system that interferes with those rights is unacceptable to me.
You must like the iTunes Music Store, then, since their version of DRM allows all of that to be done. Right?
But then again, I guess they don't count since they're not based in the US, feeding the RIAA corporate welfare lobbying machine. Or maybe they don't count here because they're not technically in euroupe, but rather in Russia which is, as we all know, actually part of Asia. Even 'tho theyre supposed to be part of the EU... or something.
They don't count because they are not paying the musicians for the music they are selling.
When do they start selling your code without paying you for your work?
Only for an apple product would the fans care more about how pretty it looked, rather than how fast it ran. Not saying it isn't fast, but why all the fuss over pictures?
The pics are of the internal designs, many of which directly affect the operation of the computer.
You should hold one once. They don't feel disposable. Build quality is much better than a disposable.
Batteries are replaceable, too.
If you'll spend $150 on a flash player, why wouldn't you spend the extra $100 on an iPod?
Most of what you are paying for when buying Bose is the marketing.
Not quite as bad as Monster Cable, but close.

What was so hard about that?
Will you bother to tell him that the victims of illegal sharing are the artists and creators themselves?
Just like the AppleMaster himself would have used.
Don't you mean beleaguered BMW?

We'll both be leaving the room during the State of the Union address.
Here is a well-written article about licensing by BMI, ASCAP, etc.
Believe it or not, there are already exemptions in place for small business who simply play the radio in the background.
