  1. Too cheap of a hack on The DIY $10 Prepaid Cellphone Remote Car Starter · · Score: 4, Interesting

In my opinion this is far too cheap of a hack. You need more control. I've personally built a very elaborate text message based system that incorporates anti-theft features/GPS/door lock/un-lock and other features. Costs $11/month in a prepaid sim card. Was great fun to construct using a microcontroller and various other parts. I was planning on building a website documenting it - but I'm horrible at putting webpages together. Other than the GPS, the cost wasn't that much more - but the unit does far more for me. Working out the bugs however took a long time, so if you're in a hurry to get remote cell based car warm-up, this project is a start.

  4. More Microsoft Bashing on Microsoft's Lack of Nightly Builds For IE · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why is the finger always at Microsoft? I vote we embargo the use of the word Microsoft on Slashdot, say, for a month. Usually any Microsoft related post is biased and ill-spirited - getting very old. There are countless software vendors that do not release nightly builds. As much as I adore Slashdot, all the MS haters on here often make me feel as if I'm associating myself with a 'new low' of computer users (sometimes). Kinda like finding yourself in the company of a bunch of racists. It's very fashionable on \. to hate Microsoft. Don't like their stuff?...simply use something else and STFU. I do agree with the article's opinion of saying the update process Microsoft uses is broken - I think Microsoft can do better.

  8. Radio Shack is not relevant anymore on RadioShack To Rebrand As "The Shack"? · · Score: 1

I remember years ago when radio shack used to carry lots of components, tools, quality audio gear, etc. The commercial/home electronics were of good quality as well. That is no longer the case. I used to collect their catalogs when I was a kid, make a list of parts I'd like.... I'd also read all of Forrest M Mims electronics publications from Tandy. The place just doesn't cater to the techie crowd/experimenter anymore. I used to have a batter club card...... at least that's how they are in Canada before Circuit City bought them over. Just a sign of the times I suppose... experimenters/do-it-yourself projects/etc, just not as economically viable for a store as they once were. Today I have to mail order everything I need for my electronics experiments. I used to like walking into a Radio Shack and purchase a logic chip or pack of LED's etc.

  9. NOT bad phone design - it's PHYSICS on Apple Says iPhone Jailbreaking Could Hurt Cell Towers · · Score: 1

Apple is partially correct: If a malicious user has access to the basebase of the radio in the phone, they can use it to jam cellular signals. Anything that is radio communications based is susceptible to radio interference - that is not a problem with the design of the wireless network, it's a vulnerability that all radio based networks have. That being said, a simple jammer with an amplifier (in theory) could jam a cell site/tower. As far as making free phone calls - i doubt it, unless they are cloning or something (I don't know enough about cellular protocols to properly comment on that front). I'm speaking about Layer-1 primarily here.

  13. Re:Promise SATA RAID = Cheap and Good on RAID Trust Issues — Windows Or a Cheap Controller? · · Score: 1

Yes - however, the promise stuff has nice software and has LED pins that show the status of each drive (red/yellow/green), etc. And for as low as a couple of hundred dollars you can get their entry level FULL hardware RAID controller. Again, if this guy is going for cheap - soft-hardware based RAID adapters aren't too painful of a purchase (in my opinion).

  14. Promise SATA RAID = Cheap and Good on RAID Trust Issues — Windows Or a Cheap Controller? · · Score: 2, Informative

I often use inexpensive SATA RAID controllers from Promise (I do not work for promise). They don't cost very much and they have been absolutely reliable for me (for many years now!). I often stick with RAID 1. I've built several RAID5 arrays and I don't find a lot of value in them for low capacities. Mirroring (RAID 1) is straight forward, and if you ever have a problem you can always read one of the RAID 1 drives using a SATA to USB interface, or if you ever need to clone a hard disk it's easy. Promise seems to use the LAST 64k of the hard drive for it's mirror info, not the FIRST 64k! this makes any of the two drives in the RAID array easy to use out of the array when/if you're in a jam (for whatever the reasons). As far as RAIDing your data only, in my opinion RAID is designed to avoid lengthy recovery procedures - don't put yourself in a disadvantaged position - all hard drives fail eventually - RAID the OS, your data, everything! If your server is a very busy server - start looking at higher end RAID solutions.
