  1. Intel Macs on UK Schools Warned Off Microsoft Deal · · Score: 5, Insightful

I already replied above, but on an unrelated note, it just occurred to me that this license would brilliantly require schools to pay Microsoft subscription fees for all their macs with Intel CPUs. As education is one area where Macs are close to dominant, this is a brilliant move. Kudos.

It reminds schools they are legally obliged to have licensed software, but suggests they use instead what is known as "perpetual licensing". Becta is just suggesting they continue to buy software rather than "moving to Microsoft's School Agreement subscription licensing model" even though it may be more expensive initially. This is because under the subscription licensing model, "Microsoft required schools to have licenses for every PC in a school that might use its software, whether they were actually doing so or running something else."

    Alright, I'll try.

First, a criticism that I've heard and experienced myself is that it can be very difficult to customize Gnome to behave as one would like it to. You end up having to resort to using a strange tool to edit something resembling a registry in order to do things that I would expect to be able to do in the GUI, and used to be able to do in the GUI in older version. If I even want to be able to right click on the desktop and open a terminal, I need an extra package.

Second, I can't tell you how many times my Gnome configuration has broken after a major upgrade. Things like panel drawers ceasing to function doesn't make me very happy. Other UIs such as KDE and xfce have not exhibited similar problems across seemingly major upgrades.

Perhaps this isn't really an idealogical issue, but it seems as though KDE does a much better job of encouraging the creation of high quality software for Linux. As one example, I haven't found a disc burning tool of comparable quality to k3b for Linux. Gnome still seems better than xfce on this part though.

    Thanks for asking.

  7. Linus Prefers KDE on GNOME Foundation Helping OOXML? · · Score: 0, Offtopic

The fact is, at the moment, Gnome is ideologically flawed. Even in terms of presenting a nice clean UI, xfce-4 does a considerably better job using their own libraries. If only distributions like Ubuntu would stop promoting the idea that Gnome is the de-facto UI of choice for Linux, maybe Gnome would seriously consider their problems and improve.

It makes sense that the overly broad ruling made earlier would be overturned due to its potential to conflict with the 1st amendment. It would have become exceptionally difficult to post sexually explicit content without fear of violating the law. Expect a less sweeping law to be put forth shortly. (IANAL)

The problem is that society doesn't accept common thoughts and behavior as normal. The problem is not that you are losing your privacy. Privacy in and of itself has no value.

This was marked "Troll" because it was an oversimplification and an exaggeration. The story I heard goes as follows:

Someone at Atari told Jobs that he would get a $5000 bonus if they could get optimize the breakout machine to use fewer than X parts. He then went to Wozniak and told him that they would get a $2000 bonus that they could split 50:50. Wozniak did most of the work and took his $1000. 10 years and a company founding later, Wozniak finally found out that Jobs both lied to him and shortchanged him. As he and Jobs hadn't exactly seen eye to eye recently, this finally pushed him over the edge and this is why he left Apple.

See no arbitrary 7%, no rubbish about reneging on an agreement, less "Troll"y.
