Yeah, you know, these are some reasons why I'm looking into migrating out of here. Not ASAP - the current regime is not interested in carrying me away in the night just yet, even though it's getting worse and worse every day. But I'm definitely looking. The problem is that I stand much to lose when migrating - going to a freer society would basically force me to renounce the somewhat high standard of living that I'm used to (compared on a world scale). With the USA being out of the question, what's left? Northern Europe, Canada maybe?, certainly Australia, while Japan is close to impossible for me.

Where is the dialog box to make the Mac OS X window manager behave like KDE or Windows wrt applications with many windows? How can I stop the menus from going into that bar and stay in the app? Why isn't the root tree easily accessible in Finder? Where are the normal Unix folders like /etc, etc. (eh!)? Where are the text files for configuring applications? Why do program folders look like files, but behave kinda sorta like folders? Everytime I use OS X it feels kinda... empty.

But why would you want to do that?

Because preventing me from doing stupid things also prevents me from doing clever ones.

I suppose I dislike the government-enforced superpowers given to the police and the press, but the firemen are somehow better than them so it makes it harder to revoke their priviledges. You know, I probably wouldn't mind it if they used such priviledges in order to serve the city. But most of the times, I see them turn on the lights 5 seconds before a crossing and turn them off 5 seconds later.
Maybe we should stop pretending that we are all equal and admit than there is a natural hierarchy? Being in IT wouldn't put at the top but at least they'd stop taking my money to give it to the various parasites. I'd be happy to let the firemen pass first at these conditions.

Wait a second there... you are partially right, but you went too far (just like he did). It's true that you can't care about everything; but being a sheep is not about not "keeping up with every sin, both real and perceived, of every corporation they deal with": it is about knowing about a problem but not bothering to THINK about it and DECIDE whether it's necessary to act. You're not a sheep if you don't know the details of this Sony case or don't care about Sony at all. You are, on the other hand, a sheep if you know that company XYZ is doing something you dislike but you just go with the flow and meh your way through the problem (neologism! you heard it here first, folks). You are a sheep if you think your political system is broken but don't take the time to at least think about such problem and try to devise a solution; and at the end of the day you vote for your usual party while muttering that everybody sucks anyway.
Come on, you know the sheep. Judging by your post you are not one, but you see them around you. You know who they are and why some people call them so.
Oh and finally. I might not meet my own standards for non-sheepness but at least I can look at myself and assess my sheep level, fully aware of the possibility of there being a problem with it. This does not stop me from seeing other people's sheepness, and in fact it makes it easier.

No, GUIs are neither dumb nor clever per se. GUIs that offer few options and no personalization; GUIs that think being all cutesy and cartoonish while offering no power; GUIs that, in short, offer nothing but eye candy while taking control away from you because they know what's best for you are dumb.
Shorter still: GNOME and Mac OS X are dumb.

Well, I think the press is simply a collection of people who think it's cool to report on stuff. End of the story. But this does not matter anyway: if we wish to keep up this travesty where "everybody is the same in front of the law" then we should stick to it and not allow exceptions and other crap like this. So no, it's not especially important for the press.
It's exactly like the recent law against cryptogrpahy in the UK: it does not matter if you're Joe Developer hoarding a stash of pr0n or Jack Politician hoarding state secrets or James D. Dealer hoarding your homies' number: you shouldn't have to give up your passwords, end of the story. The same applies here. The police can then try to crack the container or heardrop on communications. But you shouldn't HAVE to say anything. I believe US law allowed you to keep silent in order not to incriminate yourself? So why does their press even NEED special protection?
