  4. Ridiculous Solution to Ridiculous Patent on MS Gives 60-Day Deadline to Web Devs · · Score: 3, Interesting
I wonder who approved this solution in a first case and whether it would be stricken down by another court? Because form the looks of things, we are still having an object in a page, except now it's generated not from the source code, but from Javascript code. I remember in older Netscape browsers text, generated by "document.write" command used to just show up as a straight source code if you do a "View Source".

If the reasoning was to exclude object creation from the source code, we still have an OBJECT statement, but it's inside of Javascript now. And court said that it makes the difference? WTF?!!

So, if I write a code that creates JPEG file, but saves it as a text file, with following renaming .TXT to .JPG, have I just avoided JPEG PATENT?

  9. Google's Privacy Case on EFF Warns Not to Use Google Desktop · · Score: 1

Google knew that they would be releasing a new GD version that will allow storing private information on Google servers when Feds asked for search logs. I think that Google refused (and made a big deal out of it by getting ready for a court) just to assure future users of new GD version that they will not be providing any stored data to government.

I will not be surprised, however if once users start using new Google Desktop data storage features widely, Google will just start complying with the gov requests.... Name one big public company that doesn't for a long run?

    I hope I am wrong!

When we do so, we'll disclose this to users, just as we already do in those rare instances where we alter results in order to comply with local laws in France, Germany and the U.S.

  22. Subscription licensing - idea of the past... on How Many Times Should We Pay For Our Software? · · Score: 2, Insightful
Many small software companies making old DOS programs for narrowly targeted user (courier companies, schedulers for barber shops, etc.) went down that path of requiring user to enter a special code every year to make software work. This code,of cause had to be purchased from the vendor annualy.

Small businesses to which such software was geared to were trying to beat those restrictions any way possible: changing system date, searching for hacks online (as soon as Internet came around), and SWITCHING to different software, which doesn't require annual subscribtion as soon as it was available on the market.

Any company, unless it is a monopoly as MS, will not succsede trying to get user to pay annually. As with MS,if they ever push this strategy on WinOS, it would be the final push for OSS switch for many of the users.
