  1. Final straw on Apple to 'Switch' to Windows? · · Score: 1

Apple Rep #1: Dammit, Microsoft has taken our look and usability. Oh well, at least we can keep those pesky viruses off our OS. That's a good enough reason to stick with the system, dontcha think?

    Apple Rep #2: Well...

  2. Other languages suffer the same on Hackers, Spelling, and Grammar? · · Score: 1

You should see how people write here in Puerto Rico. Spanish is one of the toughest languages to learn, and I know people with college degrees, who are in their mid-to-late twenties, who have lived in Puerto Rico their entire lives, that have extremely poor grammar. Hell, even the C.E.O. of my company writes some horrible E-Mails that I have to read two or three times to understand what she wants.

  3. Re:Hell, this is not new on Test Driving Linux · · Score: 1

I've also been giving out Knoppix CDs to my friends and other people who have expressed an interest in Linux. They use it, and love it, mostly because of the games.

Then they ask me if they can install it to have it on their systems and be able to save their profiles, work, etc. I normally suggest a more polished desktop system like Suse or Mandrake. When they install it, they just lose interest quickly.

Some people are just afraid of changing or tinkering around with their system to get things the way they were before, so they go back to their comfort zone of Windows. At least that's my take on it.

  4. Hope they go all the way on McAfee, Macromedia Flirting With F/OSS Community · · Score: 1

If these companies decide to take the plunge, I really hope they don't do anything half-assed. I really don't expect for them to make a full-fledged version of, say, Dreamweaver for Linux. Still, anything is way better than nothing, and I bet I won't (and any other Open-Source followers) will be disappointed.

In any case, it should be very interesting to see what they come up with, and it's a nice way of showing others that OSS is certainly becoming a player in the industry.

Anyone have an idea how the Torahprints will look like?

  6. Innovation != Big Bucks on Games We've Never Seen Before · · Score: 1

Like many before, I also believe that game companies aren't pushing new ideas, just rehashing the same ol' games with better graphics. I remember a PvP comic in PC Gamer where one of the characters was saying that all the great games now were already 'made' back in the 80's.

The problem is, I believe most in the gaming industry are afraid of making games based on new ideas. These games will go either two ways: Be a huge success, or (most likely) flame out. Pushing these new innovations cost lots of money, and I doubt anyone wants to lose any cash flow.

  7. Re:Within 15 Minutes? WTF on Linux Kernel Gets Fully Automated Test · · Score: 1

In any case, most people, especially in mission-critical processes, don't compile a new kernel as soon as it's released. Myself, I try kernels after a while, when no major issues are found. Even then, I test them out first in different test machines. So 15 minutes before, 15 minutes after, it's all the same.

  8. Heavy but fragile? on Archos Widescreen PMP · · Score: 1

I like the idea of making everything portable, and also trying to fit in as many functions as possible. But as this equipment gets smaller and smaller, I'm just scared out of my f'n mind to spend $799 on something so small, that will either: a) get lost easily or, b) break while in my pockets.

BTW, whatever I do that'll make a small, portable unit break in my pocket is my business.

Just make new blank tld's for all porn sites. That way, only the period is written and everyone gets their pr0n fix one second faster! (I've been told one second can make all the difference in the world... I'm guessing someone out there would find this useful.)

  10. Consumers don't like to pay on Whose Burden is it to Recycle Computers? · · Score: 1

I work for a Technology Recycling Plant in Puerto Rico (sounds fancy, doesn't it?) and there's always two sides of this story.

The first part is that a big chunk of our business is brought by major corporations (Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lexmark). They took the initiative to start picking up unusable equipment they sold (obviously, with incentives for the consumer who brings back that equipment) and then our company picks it up and disposes of the equipment in a safe and good-for-the-environmental way.

The other part is that consumers don't take equipment for recycling. Why? They simply don't see why they should be paying to dispose of something. There are tons of calls made daily to the company asking if they can just dump the equipment in our facilities so we can take care of it. Once the employee tells them there's a fee involved, the conversation *magically* breaks down and the caller leaves rather abruptly.

I believe the manufacturer's should take some responsability, but not ALL of it. The consumer should be responsable too. Hey, it's just a couple of dollars for a lousy computer. Then again, there are a lot of /.'ters out there, so maybe that's translated into a couple hundred bucks :)
