I read these books when I was little as well. It was my obsession to avert disaster, and so I would quietly perform depth first search on the book until I found the path that led me to the best ending! I never got lost in the hall of mirrors or let my jerk friend take all the money we accidentally found in the bushes. Victory was always mine, mwahahaha!
Activating 'party mode' by default spawns a Babe-Level Management Routine (BALMER), which controls the Magnet. Preset desired peak and sustained chick levels are set in the Application Data Layer, and MIDAS carefully manages the Chick Magnet to maintain the ambient babeness at the level desired for the activity.
Although one quirk of the system is to open a closet door and launch a chair at anyone who has ever completed a Google search.
It doesn't really matter to me what software comes preinstalled. If I were to purchase a Dell computer, then the first thing I would do is format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system in order to clear out all the superfluous software. I did this with my laptop and startup/shutdown times are less than half of what they used to be.
Everyone seems to complain about the new UI. But is it possible to revert back to the old UI, the same way that Windows XP lets you change the UI back to the old Windows 95 user interface? (Go to Display Properties and change the theme to "Windows Classic")
I hate to generalize (Ok, I love it, but pretend for a second I don't) but our society today needs some humor. We hear "terrorist this" and "gas prices that" and "x troops killed today in Iraq by insurgents..." every day. We seem so drenched in sadness and tragedy sometimes we forget what we are: free!
Remember Bowling For Columbine? For some reason, our society (in the United States) is obsessed with violence and tragedy, while some of our neighbors in Canada don't think so much about it (some of them leave their doors unlocked even after being robbed once). I agree; we as a country really need to lighten up.

Now it will be slashdotted and the DoS continues...
