On 9/11 we would not allow any international flights to land in our country... they were too dangerous. So what does canada do, they take them, even in Toronto. Now any of those planes could have been compromised for all they knew, they could have lost many lives, but they did it anyway. Well, when I was working up there after 9/11, Bush thanked all sorts of nations for helping, and left out Canada. Don't worry, they are not too dumb to notice.

While the variable bit rate codecs are getting much better than the early ones, I no longer bother with mp3's. I just compress everything to FLAC these days - it does not get better than playing a data stream that is half the size, has lost nothing AND is an open standard.

I feel I should tell you (since you cannot hear it any more) that the compression on Sirius (XM as well?) is horrendous. 14. Re:Density? on FCC Commish - US Playing 'Russian Roulette' with Broadband · · Score: 1

I agree that of the border areas this is the least populated. But most of Canada is not on the border, and this is not a small stretch. From the Manitoba border to Sudbury Ontario there are very few populated areas. This is a 16 hour drive? That is not trivial. There are very few other places in the world where you can drive an hour on the countries main highway and not see a single house.

Of the areas that border the US, "Northern Ontario" seems to be the least populated, but if you travel the southern border of Sask or Alberta, there is not much there either... just badlands. Then there is a strip of population, and then the Northern parts are all isolated again. And lets not talk about the Youkon or Northwest territories, man that is bleak. (I know you changed the names, but I can't keep up)

My point is - just because you live in southern ontario or Qubec, mid Alberta or a very small strip of BC... don't think that rolling out broadband to MOST of canada is trivial, or that it does not exsist in other parts(I've been through some of it, and these people are online).

If the U.S. put half the energy into broadband access that Canada does, the coverage would be amazing.

  15. Re:Density? on FCC Commish - US Playing 'Russian Roulette' with Broadband · · Score: 1

I was going to use the same line myself.

But seriously, outside of some of the US west(especially the desert areas) the rest of the rural USA still has a high population density, and that should be more attractive to deploy high speed networks than the rural areas of Norway or Canada (I have not traveled Sweden). Take a drive I do once in a while from Chicago to Boston. No matter what route I take, there will be small villages/hamlets everywhere. It would be hard to get really stranded.
Now if I go up north to your country (Canada) from Chicago, I'd be in thunder Bay. If I drive east from there for 8 hours, I would have passed through maybe 4 villages and passed a bunch of other isolated houses that might be at least 60 miles (100 km) from the nearest neighbor. Flying north would be even worse (yes, you can't drive far north except in winter... another whole story) And going west isn't much better for about 5 hours. And yet, these remote towns seem to have high speed access, and had it earlier than many comparable US towns.
I talked to one Business owner in the north, and he was stuck on Satalite Internet, but the government paid for most of his hardware cost so his monthly charge was all he really had to pay, and it was not too bad. Now if you live in a canadian city, you likely don't know your government does this, but I don't think it hurts your broadband numbers.

Summary... Much of the rural US is easy pickings compared to Canada and Norway. The tough areas are areas like Montana and Alaska, and that is not a large percentage of rural customers.

First off, I disagree with the whole premise that being from the EU can be compared to being from the US. The EU is a group of countries, about as many as we have in the Americas.

The people from the EU are MUCH better traveled on average. You will find that they travel outside of their country much more often, and often know more than one language. In Italy, many of the people I met spoke English, Italian, German and French(one knew spanish as well)... Wow, did I ever feel humbled.

Most citizens of EU countries have far more vacation days than the US does. This also aids the tendency to travel.

Also, even if persons from the EU did not travel more - THEY WOULD STILL BE LESS SHELTERED! Why? They do not suffer from news organizations that seem to conspire to keep important world news suppressed. You think I am making this up? I learned about the Darfur genocide (big news) up in Canada, a couple of years before I ever saw it mentioned in the U.S. This unfortunately is just the most obvious example.

How can most of the Citizens of our country proudly claim that the USA is the greatest country on earth...when they have not sampled even ONE other country... let alone a sizable chunk of the best nations on earth??? I am afraid they are not only "sheltered" but also ignorant and "intellectually undeveloped" (It reminds me of the old Soviet Union and how the people BELIEVED they were as close as possible to Utopia on earth)

List of great countries I enjoyed the most, and that I think many USers might really enjoy.
    Very Developed
    --------------
    Australia
    Canada
    New Zealand
    Norway (language barrier I know)
    Switzerland
Singapore (really nice and well run)
    Grand Caymen
(note I have not mentioned England? Sorry guys, too many countrymen just do not make others feel welcome... to put it nicely, I do thank you for making Belize what it is though)

    Not quite First World
    ---------------------
Belize (English speaking, and very nice outside the rougher "belize city". I like the undeveloped south)
    Costa Rica
    Barbados
    Aruba
    etc. etc.

And then there are countries that are great that are just a bit too much of a cultural or linguistic stretch for the average USer, but are good for the adverturous.... Such as South Korea, a great country really.

All the other great countries that I have left out... Sorry.
