Of course you're right, I was just whoring for the +5 Funny (and got it, woo hoo!).
Even 2Mbps is only pretty average in a lot of countries nowadays though (I managed to get the update in about 10 seconds on my 8Mbps home connection), and I kinda thought that Slashdot itself might have a little more downstream than me... But then I suppose he doesn't live at the colo... or does he?!?
It really seems like somebody at M$ has said "what're the best bits of Linux (et al), and why can't we put them into Windows?" Hence we have the much-touted "Monad" shell thing, symlinks,... But in fact they're not really addressing the Windows' real shortcomings as a server OS, just piling on more coats of paint as they often tend to do...
But halon gas fire suppression systems should have
I thought halon fire supression systems went out of fashion in the nineties (you know, the whole people-getting-trapped-inside-and-suffocating thing...) Reminds me of the Terminator movies actually...
Oh well forget about using Coral, it doesn't work very well when some brainiac at millionsofgames.com has put hostnames in all the navigation links, so that every click takes you off Coral. Everyone knows you should make your intra-site links as relative as possible (what happens if you want to change your hostname, huh?!?). They deserver to get slashdotted for that.
Site looks to be slashdotted already (and only 27 comments?). You might want to use Coral (at least for an initial look -- there's presumably a lot of dynamic content on the site though...)
Seems kinda dumb that BT trackers rely on the clients to honestly report their ratios/upload amounts. Is it just this tracker implementation, or does the BT protocol work that way?
IIRC the ed2k network had a similar issue in its infancy, nowadays (with eMule anyway) "upload credit" is maintained as a relationship between each client (i.e. I know how much a person has sent to me, so I know how much I should reward them in my upload queue) -- no potential for abuse that way.
OMG dude I cannot believe how totally rude you are, you just linked to those poor nerds' intarweb site, and now their server is, like, exploded! Shame on you!!! I hope they link their web page back to you page! How do you like it now, huh!?!?!!!!!!~~
This looked interesting (IMDb's recommendations are crap), but I was overwhelmed with the Comic Sans and daggy graphics on your intro pages, and my head exploded.
Surely the biggest stumbling block for FreeBSD on small, cheap devices isn't support for wireless, so much as the neglected port to ARM? Oh how I long to run FreeBSD on an NSLU2! And I don't think they are doing much better with the other embedded CPU architectures, either...
The kind of split they are considering for Telstra is into two separate wholesale and retail arms (similar to what has been done with BT, as I understand). This is important, because at present Telstra sells its services to end users, but also rents out space in its telephone exchanges for other providers to host their equipment -- except the wholesale prices Telstra charge are sometimes so high as to prevent other providers from competing against Telstra's retail products (which is, coincidentally, in the best interests of the company as a whole and its 51% private owners). The point of the split is to prevent [accusations of] such anti-competitiveness in future.
... that the fan site is fake, because it doesn't look like my 12-year-old sister made it using 1997-vintage Geocities Page Builder (cf a lot of other fan sites out there).
Except that in Australia our "detention centres" for illegal immigrants defy the parent's linked definition (definition says "can be kept for short periods of time"; we often hear stories of people held for many years).
Except you couldn't switch to using only biometric authentication (not until they get a little DNA blood pinprick scanner thingy, anyway), so the best place for biometric authentication is as an added layer of protection on top of the 20 regularly-rotated random passwords stored in your brain.
Yes, my tin foil hat fits very nicely thankyouverymuch.

Holy sh*t, Taco's still on dialup? It's only 6MB!

PS: I'm not sorry for all the peace loving hippies I might of offended.
I am a grammar nazi and you just offended me.
Seeing bad movies only encourages them. Watch responsibly

Thanks for that.
who in turn will see the ads (or pay for the privilege of not having to)
Firefox with Adblock works superbly for me.
Oh wait, did you mean the stories?
some of the Amazon commenters were saying that the only reason it was getting five stars was because of people rating it over and over
But surely our friend Jeff would have already patented a "novel method of filtering duplicate product ratings by unique Internet number address"?
Crap, I knew I'd forget something ...
Analyse this, bitch!
*slashdots his server*
Pfft, looks like none of the mods have seen Total Recall recently ...

A revolving plastic torso with an annoying voice named Johnny, who randomly bursts into flames, that's who!

Yeah about time too ... I mean, CSS has only been around for almost nine years ...
OMG so there is a reason it says "check those URLs!" (the fan site is here)

That's exactly what I pictured when I read the summary ... but then I RTFAed and it looks like a few flimsy bits of plastic :-(
