  1. Re:Great, ads... on Massive Inc. Advertising Takes Off · · Score: 1

Pfft, good luck with those ads. I was asked about this at work recently and it's clear that in-game ads are coming since we've got a game landscape of movie and sports sequels.

What I didn't mention, though, was that it'll only be a matter of time before there's a work-around. For every 'Insert Disc 1' to play incident, there's a NOCD patch to fix it. For every in-game ad there will be a NOAD patch to stop the requests.

  7. Schism on Look Ahead To Women in Games Conference · · Score: 1

There appears to be a huge schism opening up between what constitues a female gamer and what video companies should be doing to attract more gamers.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that 'casual gamers' is what both sides are talking about. The female gamers who can't find games to play are just casual gamers and the market that games companies are chasing is the 'casual games' one.

Two things - I doubt they have an office, my guess is they all work remotely (read, bedroom) so there's no face-to-face communication about dupes and posts, which is killer.

Second, the is the second time recently that I've seen a dupe get *way* more comments than the original, even if 90% of them are 'dupe!' posts.

    Go figure.

It also means that the Tube will have to be *properly* staffed 24/7.

That means increased training and increased staffing and therefore increased staff costs - who wants to be the one to search a possible terrorist?

Which will just result in attacks aimed at buses or pedestrians, so it's not going to work. I think it's time for the safest man in the UK to start taking those second thoughts he's been having more seriously...

Flash is a good alternative, but just make sure you use Actionscript 2. The IDE is poor so use your own wherever possible.

What about Flash? is a great paper on wiritng games in Flash, from a programmers perspective.

The real advice I'd give once you've decided what tools to use, is to finish the project. Games aren't easy to write as they end up in play testing and bug hunting like any other app so put in the hours and finish off the game. If you never do it again at least you have a working game.

Yes, spot on. If you're a Java programmer already then hopping over to Python isn't going to be huge jump. I'm surprised at the number of people suggesting SDL in here but I guess I shouldn't be- it's well documented and performs fast enough for anything you'll want to do.

*sigh*, matched only by the number of i-play press releases the Guardian Games Blog has managed to reprint as news recently.

As always, UK:Resistance says it best - Sorry love, women are shit at Tekken. Why I hate Wimmin in Gaming comes a close second too.

Here's a thought - maybe more women would get into gaming if people desperate to sell games didn't keep on and on about how women are this huge market waiting to explode....

  20. Casual != Grind on MMOGs Reaching For Casual Gamers · · Score: 1

Casual gaming doesn't mean spending 40 hours a week 'mining' and 'leveling up'. What the Guardian Gamesblog is missing (yet again) is a proper look at the alternatives. There are hundreds of browser based MMORPGs, there's Neopets and there's Habbo Hotel, Gaia online and so on.

Casual gaming and MMORPGs *can* go hand in hand but not in the current format. Browser based MMORPGs are much more likely to succeed given that casual gaming means gaming at your desk and insatlling the drivers, booting up the lastest game connecting to your local server is all too much to be defined casual.

Or rather, enough telling us how popular casual games are, how about a casual games section on the NYT? Of all the major newspapers on The Guardian have a dedicated games section, but even they just spend most of their time either republishing press releases from i-play or blogging about how casual games are sure to be the next big thing.

It's time for the casual games discussion to move on from just talk. I'm hoping that the Casual Games Conference will be the start of that, especially as 3rdsense will be speaking there ;)
