I was wondering the same thing... who needs a 3D printed gun? There are a @#$$ load of more useful applications for this. I guess we'll get to it after the newness wears off.
Want to make a statement about the necessity of government services? Shut EVERYTHING down... the ports, the national defense, the food inspectors, the air traffic controllers. That would last about 15 minutes and the Tea-rrorists will crawl back into their hole and stop holding the economy hostage every six months. (or should we just start the market manipulation hearings now instead of waiting for them to secure their trades and shorts?)
It's not a public vs. private debate; it's about the teaching methods and curriculum being used. We don't raise educated kids anymore, we manufacture them. This force-fed, dependency-driven model kills any drive for our kids to self-educate and explore...that won't be on the test! We stick them in a chair and yell things at them. We tell them to be quiet. We entertain them with videos of experiments. We send them home to practice this model on themselves. We measure their value by the volume of their output and their ability to recite the thoughts of others. We never ask their opinions.
To fix the problem you need to start at the top of the educational process: the teacher factories, where they instruct the "best and brightest" on the most effective methods of conscription while simultaneously removing from these future teachers their own creativity and desire to help others grow.
running a server from a home ISP is great for people to learn technology, sparks creativity, and is great for those of us who are IT focused
Isn't that the supposed reason Google is doing Fiber, to encourage learning, collaboration, and innovation by removing bandwidth as a contraint? Or is this a lie?
I think a twenty-something media age is pretty normal in any large company, tech or not. I work for a large non-tech firm and our average is closer to 28 and the average lifespan of a new hire is around 4 years. Those who stay (i.e. make the 4th year cut) tend to stick around for 25+ years and gobs of money.
Most people start their careers in places that can hire in bulk, train in bulk, manage in bulk, and promote in bulk. You do your time, decide what you want in life, and move "up or out." Assuming you move out, then there will be plenty of smaller companies waiting to hire you for your prior company's investment in your experience and training. Circle of life stuff, really.
I think its just as likely Google Voice will be "Spring Cleaned" out of existence.
Let's say that happens...this isn't as easy as turning off Google Wave. Where do the numbers go? Will future generations call it Port-ageddon? Will there be FCC intervention, socialist cape included? Will puppies be scarified too?
Dr. Bakker,
It seems to me that those Christians who reject evolution and dinosaurs are viewing God as some kind of puppeteer who guides every action and reaction in the universe. Applied to free will, that view basically means that we're little more than Calvinistic slot cars running around a track.
How involved do you think God has been in the evolution of life on Earth? Were the dinosaurs intentionally killed off or was it just one of many possible outcomes for them?
If you want to ban something, ban the Washington Times...and any other news outlet that tries to sell fear, myths, and partisan politics from under a cloak of objectivity.
Yes, governments and entities with very valuable data and secrets should always have concerns about espionage, but your average Joe doesn't come into contact with information that is either interesting enough or valuable enough to warrant this level of risk aversion. Your company is either a government contractor, bank, KFC, or possibly megalomaniacal and irrational.
'Our hearts go out to these young people. Their unfortunate experience reminds us that we must continue our work to empower and educate users about our robust privacy controls.'"
So where, exactly, is the setting that allows me to prevent others from adding me to a group without my permission (or prevent it from appearing to others)? I can't seem to find it under "security settings", "privacy settings"...or is it on the "account settings" or "basic info" pages? Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place?
http://thehappyscientist.com is a site that specifically caters to children with an interest in science. Robert Krampf does a wonderful job of making the subjects (including chemistry) engaging, understandable, age appropriate, and educational. There have been several times when I've had to tell my 10 year old to "turn off that science stuff and go to bed!"
On a related topic, I've only quickly scanned the/. comment blather that's been posted here, much of it against alternative schooling. I commend your family for deciding to take a different path and wish more people would consider the option. Ignore the attacks and focus on what you know to be the best thing for your kids. No one starts homeschooling on a whim and I'm sure it was a difficult decision, even without the ignorant 18 year old critics who are still 15 girlfriends away from discovering reproduction.
I just remitted a check to the State of New York because of some kind of "revenue sharing" agreement I have with them related to my employment in the state. I believe this makes NY, and by association, your county employer, business partners of mine. I am therefore entitled to a share of the revenue/benefits achieved through this technology you created while employed by my business partner. I happen to need the money more than a WSP file, so please send me cash, check, or starbucks cards.

Yep. It's how you act when no one is watching that determines your true character.
Yes, we're all watching now, but at least Biology-Online has fired the guy.

why would one need that fancy machine to copy e-books
The description from TFV says this was an art project to provoke thought, not a serious attempt to beat DRM.
Kindle Readers and DRM aside for a moment, this combination of automated Legos and stop motion photography may require some exploration...

This is not a future I want to see.
Another abbreviation comes to mind with your eager correction to the obvious variations for the "A". DILLIGAFF
TLA
Three Letter Acronym
Yes, and it was classified. The mind boggles.
The 651 page, taxpayer-funded version of LMGTFY.
I can only imagine how long the still-classified document for connecting to an office printer must be.
I'm genuinely sad about this news
My kids will be crushed, especially with the Mii contest going away. The spend as much time inventing and sharing Miis as they do playing the games.
That's good because preserving student's privacy is more important than preserving tax breaks for the wealthy.
Don't presume my politics, or that using in-house IT staff provides any guarantee of improved student privacy.
Quick cites: "...It would require the DOE to create a web-based point for authorized researchers to gather aggregated data as well as a âoeresearch engine,â allowing access to âoestudent levelâ data...."
"Harvard University raised concern on and off campus with the revelation that the administration searched e-mails for leaks to the media during the cheating scandal revealed last year...."
"U. of Iowa Ceases Sending Student Data to Sheriffâ(TM)s Office Over Privacy Questions"
and my favorite...a school administrator spying on his students (see interview at 4:37).
Google will simply stop offering free GApps for Education for Massachusetts Schools and Non-Profits. That's OK.
Really? And that's good how? So local IT staff can manage the in-house mail and document management system in their spare time?
School flock to Google to save money on software and administration. How is this different from Microsoft offering free software to teachers and students?

Nice answers for the most part (except of curse for the cool hack question, kinda took a pass on that one).
You must admit though, that was a pretty lame attempt to get him to say something "uncool".

I'd love to RTFA, but it requires a login. Mirror please?
